(Written April 2022) **Hope For Life** 1 DocuSign Envelope ID: 15D13C9E-5500-44BD-9B1F-B05C624D33CD ## **Section C Objectives and activities** _To advance the Christian faith in such parts of Asia and the world for the benefit of the public in accordance with the statements of belief appearing in the schedule by:_ - 4.1. _The training, discipling and mentoring of young adult Christians in a variety of skills that will enable them to deliver the social out-workings of Christianity and to be agents of change in their home communities and for their people (in particular, but not necessarily exclusively, the Dyak tribes of Borneo);_ - 4.2. _Providing such young people with opportunities to receive ministry into their own lives so as to receive healing and release from childhood and young adult emotional and spiritual wounds, thus enabling them to live lives of freedom and confidence in their identity in Christ;_ - 4.3. _Working to see such young people fully integrated into the local church, actively living as part of the local Body of Christ, and so preparing them to have active supportive ministries in their home communities; which will enable them to fulfil their destiny and calling from God, so that they may be a light to the world, salt to the earth, thus being more effectively able to demonstrate the personal and social out-workings of Christianity._ ## **Additional details of objectives and activities** Hope For Life was started in August 2015 by Chris Tapp whose desire was to provide a means for young adults from the Dyak tribes of Borneo to have the opportunity to grow in a relationship with God, to be discipled and mentored in the Christian Life, and to have opportunities to receive training and education at an appropriate level to give them a firm foundation onto which they could build their lives and be able to provide for their future families and give into and enhance their community. From this Hope For Life was formally inaugurated as a UK Charity on July 27[th] 2019. Hope For Life continues to support 1 student at school and 10 students at university (partially or fully). Hope For Life has provided medical care for its beneficiaries, and also for some close family members. Hope For Life has provided at various times weekly training meetings in the Foundations of the Christian Faith, together with many ad-hoc teaching and mentoring sessions. Hope For Life works closely with several local Indonesian pastors to ensure its beneficiaries receive ongoing and appropriate pastoral support as part of their commitment to church life. Hope For Life also links with American missionaries in Yogya who provide more intensive Discipleship Training Chris Tapp has been unable to visit Indonesia during this year due to covid restrictions, All of the above are designed to fulfil our charitable obligations to benefit the public. ## **Future Growth** The charity is still operating at (beyond) full capacity and is not currently in a position to support further individuals. Any future individuals that HFL may support would undergo an Application process by invitation of the trustees, would need to have been known to at least one of the trustees for at least a number of months, and be recommended by their local pastor. The trustees would consider any such applications on their merit, and in the light of sponsorship and funding available. The decision of the trustees will be absolute and binding. HFL continues to seek further volunteers who could support us in our work, and in particular anyone with accounting or secretarial (minute taking) skills. We also continue to seek support in fund raising (including approaching grant-making charities) and developing appropriate sponsorship programmes. Annual Report - year end 30[th] June 2021. HFL has continued to be busy this year, and all its activities have been
designed to support, encourage, motivate and mentor its beneficiaries so
that they continue to grow and mature as young adults ready to face their
future with a God-given confidence.
July sees the end of most university semesters, though not all follow
exactly the same pattern and dates. Some have a longer break than
others between their academic years.

Adi graduated in September 2020. It was a live ceremony in Yogya. This
was very proud moment for Adi who comes from a very poor family. Adi
has always supported his family (including working in the goldmines
several years previously to be able to buy medicine for his dying mother).
He still actively encourages and supports his nephews and extended
family. This was a great day of celebration with all the Yogya group.
In February 2021 Bambang graduated with Cum Laude (Distinction).

There are numerous photo studios set up for these events and some of the “official photos” are included here. HFL was able to support Bambang’s brother Wardiru, and his Mum and Step-Dad to travel to Pontianak to attend the ceremony and photo shoot, A very proud moment for his Mum in particular who has only ever known very primitive village life. Luciana (Bambang’s girlfriend) and family were also able to attend. Gati graduated in May 2021. HFL has helped him at various stages during his final schooling and university career, His family were able to support him for much of the time but the covid pandemic meant they had no money. Gati is hoping to get a job with a law firm as an intern, and then possibly take further legal qualifications. He has a real heart to help others and during his holidays helped with soccer training and teaching children in the local villages. Dani returned to Yogya for 2 months to complete the final stage of his degree. He finally received his degree on 23[rd] June. Dani has returned to his wife in his village and is hoping to find a good job in Central Kalimantan. This has been an important year for Bambang! He moved to Pontianak in September 2020, and after several interviews and some frustrations he was selected from a large group of candidates to be the Manager of a team of people for a large parcel delivery company. He has now completed his training and earns a good salary (by Indonesian standards). In December Bambang travelled to Lusi’s village and he and Lusi became engaged! It was obviously a very proud moment. Bambang and Lusi have known each other for many years. Lusi’s village is near the village where Bambang grew up. Roni David’s dad took part in the official engagement ceremony. In February he graduated on-line. We had hoped that he would be able to do this in person, and that I would also be able to attend, however covid prevented all of that. Finally in June Bambang and Lusi were married in the village. Lusi’s family is quite wealthy and so there were high expectations. Traditionally Indonesians take ceremonies such as engagements and weddings very seriously and there is a lot of pressure to make it a very memorable event. Annual Report - year end 30[th] June 2021. HFL began to support Yanti in September 2020. (Yanti is Adi’s cousin).
We enabled her to come to Yogya and then Adi took her to Bali. She has
a scholarship from Cornerstone church, and HFL help her with some
basic living expenses. She is studying at the Cornerstone College to
teach Christian Religion. When she finishes she plans to teach in her
village. She has very full programme. Tuesday to Thursday there are
lectures in the afternoon at the campus. Friday night there is a service.
They reach out to the Kelugkung district, and there are 3 worship
sessions each week.
Sarik continues to very well in Sintang, though this was a sad year for him. His father, Sembeling,
passed away in April after a long battle with throat cancer. This has released Sarik somewhat from the
responsibility of caring for him, although he now needs to care for his grandparents. In the village he
barters for food, exchanging with other village people. He also works hard to help with village projects.
He looks very smart when he is in his formal university clothes. He is on course to finish August 2022.

There have been some increased costs associated with travel due to the covid pandemic. Additionally HFL has been able to provide high performance laptops for Supi, Sah-Roni and Yefta to enable them to undertake the practical work associated with their subjects. HFL loans laptops to its beneficiaries whilst they are studying. However on Graduation HFL gifts the laptops to the beneficiary. It has been very encouraging to see the students grow in their faith and life skills, as well as performing well at university. HFL is committed to supporting them all until the end of their studies, and to help them transition into secure jobs. We hope that they will then be in a strong position to develop their lives, and to form strong Godly relationships as the foundation to married and family life, whilst being able to support and encourage their own local and wider communities. **Section E Financial review** At various times again during the year loans were made to the charity. Taking into account the overpayment of £250 from the previous year, and repayments made during the year, there is an outstanding debt of £1170. Last year the charity ended the year with an outstanding debt of £1505 for expenses incurred, predominantly in respect of flight tickets purchased. These have been cleared during the year, and all expenses for flights this year have been paid by the charity. (Due to administrative restraints in booking flights these are paid for personally by Chris Tapp, and then refunded by the charity.) The charity funds each beneficiary who is studying away from home once a year with either a one way (where the family are able to help) or return flight to allow then to return to their families and villages. This year there were additional costs involved due to the covid pandemic. **Further financial review details** The charity’s main source of income continued to be from personal sponsorship / donations made by various individuals, there were also smaller donations made by church groups. HFL did not receive any grants or funding from any other charities or public bodies. HFL benefitted from Gift Aid repayments of £2606 and the trustees wish to record their gratitude to those individuals who allowed us to claim the GA rebate on their gifts. HFL received (restricted) sponsorship specifically for 8 of our beneficiaries, this amounted to £4208. Those that contributed in this way are welcome to contact the Treasurer to receive a full breakdown of how their sponsorship was used. ## **Section F Other information** Hope For Life continues to seek support from churches or other organisations sympathetic to its aims. The trustees would welcome any opportunity to present the work of the charity to any interested group or individual.
