(b) To advance the education of the public in the conservation, protection and improvement of the Perranporth marine and coastal physical and natural environment. **TAR** March **2012** 2 In planning our events and activities for November 2023 - November 2024, we kept in mind the Charity Commissions guidance on public benefit at our trustee meetings. A verbal reminder of this guidance will be given to all trustees at the AGM meeting in November of this year. Note: Events are shown from 1 November 2023 – 3 November 2024 to include all events held up to the current AGM. - **Winter** 1) 12[th] November – beach clean on Perranporth beach 2) 10[th] December – beach clean on Perranporth beach and Christmas social with mince pies at the Watering Hole Pub who supported the group by donating the mince pies. - 3) 14[th] January – beach clean on Perranporth beach 4) 11[th] February – beach clean on Perranporth beach to support Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s “Love Your Beach” Day - a series of coastal clean-ups around Valentine's Day. 45 Volunteers cleared a total of 24kg rubbish, much recycled. **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)** - **Spring** 5) 3 March – Seaquest Sunday - seawatch citizen science project for Cornwall Wildlife Trust. - 6) 4[th] April – Marine Plastics Workshop with artist Julie Watson. Children made a fish from plastic litter found on the beach and this was displayed in Perranporth doctor’s surgery. - 7) 27[th] April – the group were represented by several trustees at the Spring into Action event organized by P.A.C.E. (Perranzabuloe Action for Climate Emergency) with an information board about the group’s local conservation work. - 8) 12[th] May – beach clean on Perranporth beach . - **Summer** - 9) 2n June – Seaquest Sunday – seawatch citizen science project for Cornwall Wildlife Trust. - 10) 9[th] June – beach clean on Perranporth beach. 11) 21[st] July – beach clean on Perranporth beach. 12) 4[th] August – beach clean and litter scavenger hunt for the kids, to celebrate National Marine Week. - 13) 6[th] August - rockpool bingo to celebrate National Marine Week with Bex Allen of Cornwall Wildlife Trust. (Perranzabuloe Action Climate Emergency), Perranporth Library, Surfers Against Sewage, Perranporth GP practice.** You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about: - policy on grantmaking; - policy programme related investment; - contribution made by volunteers. ## Section D Achievements and performance Grants achieved: we gratefully received a good grant of £350 from a local charity – Perranporth Gardens Charities to support our beach cleaning efforts and to renew our public liability insurance. We have also been grateful recipients of a collection made on Halloween night by the Tywarnhale Inn, Perranporth, who donated £300 to the group, on account of our involvement of local children in our events. Together with 2 other marine groups in Cornwall, we have been offered more support from Cornwall Wildlife Trust to build a presence in the local community and to receive further training in areas such as social media. The group has contributed to conserving the local environment with regular beach and dune cleans, and this year once more we supported Surfers Against Sewage with their Million Miles Beach clean event and a National Marine Week beach clean. We also have continued to use illustrated sheets to use during our Litter Scavenger Hunt which aims to encourage children to litter pick at our beach cleans. We have undertaken training on Shoresearch Surveys run by Cornwall Wildlife Trust and aim to hold our own surveys on Perranporth beach in the future, furthering knowledge of species diversification and giving valuable insights into species changes in the light of climate change. In terms of making the public aware of the natural environment of Perranporth, this year we held some very successful rockpool ramble during the year. Our first was held during National Marine Week which was attended by over 60 young people and their parents, both local and holiday makers. This was run with an expert from Cornwall Wildlife Trust and this year we trialled our rockpool bingo sheets which encouraged participants to become citizen scientists and to find and tick off marine creatures in the rockpools. We also had an extremely well attended rockpool ramble and weever fish discovery day led by expert, Matt Slater from Cornwall Wildlife Trust, attended by 90 people - over half of them children. The feedback on this was that the participants loved these events and demand is high for more of them, so this year we squeezed in a total of three rockpool ramble events – our last held in November, again with much appreciated help from Cornwall Wildlife Trust. This year, we continued our monthly Seaquest sea watch surveys for marine ‘mega fauna’ which take place from Cligga Head on the first Sunday of every month, in conjunction with other marine groups. We were pleased to be joined by local wildlife enthusiasts. We have posted extensively on our Facebook page to highlight our work, environmental issues and information about marine life. We have also posted relevant information from other groups and organisations, in particular that of Cornwall Wildlife’s Your Shore projects and the Making Space for Sand (dunes) project, and other charities such as British Divers Marine Life Rescue work and the Seal Research Group. We have also highlighted dangers to wildlife such as flying rings which can harm seals. Held our first marine plastics workshop with a local artist, which was well received. The resulting fish made from litter was displayed in the local GP practice and had good feedback. Continued support of past Beach Rangers who wish to volunteer, support of Duke of Edinburgh award pupils at local schools, supporting marine biology students who wish to volunteer for us. . Seaquest Sundays on regular basis to record larger marine animals. Continued training with Cornwall Wildlife Trust Shoresearch Surveys.
