**Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document**
a) To conserve and preserve for the public benefit the former St Ciwg's Church, Llangiwg, Ynysmeudwy. b) To advance the education of the public in the history, culture and natural environment of Llangiwg and surrounding area. c) To further or benefit the residents of Llangiwg and the neighbourhood, without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious or other opinions, by associating together the said residents and local authorities, voluntary and other organisations, in a common effort to advance education and provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation, with the objective of improving conditions of life for the residents.

In planning their activities for the year the trustees have had regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit at their trustee meetings.
The main activities are as follows:
- Ensuring that the former Llangiwg Church, a listed building of historic significance, remains accessible to the general public by opening it for tours and visits as regularly as possible, and by making it available to anyone as a 'peaceful space' for meditation/quiet time sessions.

- Developing a programme of talks, lectures and other projects about all aspects of Llangiwg and its environs, along with accompanying educational material.
- Providing a unique rural venue for events and activities that benefit the local community, and which, in particular, enable the continuity of much valued local cultural traditions (eg. the Mari Lwyd at New Year).
In carrying out the above, the Trust organises and promotes a programme of activities itself, both at Llangiwg and elsewhere in the area, and also engages with other local organisations and individuals who are interested in using the building for recreational and educational purposes relating, in particular, to the arts, health and well-being, and environmental awareness.
To facilitate these activities the Trust is currently committed to working towards taking on a long-term lease of the building and becoming wholly responsible for maintaining its historic fabric for the benefit of present and future generations.

The trustees are supported by a small group of volunteers who help organise and promote the Trust's activities, contribute to events, and assist with the on-going maintenance of both the church and churchyard grounds. Advice on matters relating to the building is provided by historic buildings consultant and surveyor Mr Trevor Francis, who has a longstanding knowledge and experience of the site.

Section D Achievements and performance
**Summary of the main** The first half of 2021 once again saw the trust unable to open the building **achievements of the charity** for events and activities owing to the on-going risk of Covid and the **during the year** resulting restrictions. The trustees' proposed membership scheme and their objective of arranging a long-term lease of the building were also put on hold until the outlook became clearer. Meanwhile, trustees continued to monitor the condition of the building and the upkeep of the grounds, with the focus on carrying out small external and internal maintenance jobs and ensuring that the building remained as wind and watertight as possible. In the summer, when the Covid situation briefly eased, the charity invited up to 30 supporters to celebrate St Ciwg's Day with a mainly outdoor picnic event. It was attended by 22 people, with Covid safety measures in place. The Trust's initiative to develop a new pilgrimage trail from Brecon to the Swansea coast, including Llangiwg and other places of historical interest, took a step forward in the summer when a small group of supporters mapped out and walked part of the proposed route from Brecon to Llangiwg. 'The Brychan Trail' project is intended to increase accessibility to Llangiwg and its history, while also promoting the health benefits of walking. In September an illustrated article on Llangiwg church, combining reflections on its recent and distant history, was published in the literary magazine New Welsh Review. A beautifully crafted and detailed large model of Llangiwg church, which was gifted to the Trust by one of the trustees, who had spent several years working on it, was put on display locally to keep the building in the public eye and to promote the charity's work. Due to Covid, the Trust was unable to mount a programme of fundraising events at the church in 2021, which was its main source of income in 2019 - 20. Expenditure was correspondingly low, and its total receipts for the year (£573) were donations from supporters. The charity's running costs are anticipated to rise once it embarks on the process of taking on an insuring and repairing lease, as planned since 2019. In the latter part of 2021, with the help of their surveyor, trustees applied to Cadw for a grant under its Historic Buildings Maintenance and Repair Capital Grant Programme 2021-22, a scheme which, owing to the pandemic, was offering financial help to listed buildings used as community centres. In November, Cadw approved in principle their application to replace part of the internal floor in the nave and install new weatherboards on the east and west gables of the church. These woodwork repairs were estimated to cost just under £5,000 and were due to be completed before the end of February 2022. Rehearsals got underway for the charity's most popular heritage-related event of the year, the Mari Lwyd on New Year's Eve, but this had to be cancelled at short notice owing to another resurgence of Covid.

## **Section E Financial review**
Cash funds at year end 31/12/21 were £961. Trustees aim to achieve a **Brief statement of the** level of reserves that covers six months' running costs In the event of **charity’s policy on reserves** loss of income and any unforeseen expenditure, and in particular against the risk of the building being closed for longer than expected for repair or restoration work. Currently trustees are also preparing for higher running costs once they take on a long-term lease of the building in 2022-23.
