Our mission is to supply regular shipments of food, warm clothes and other life essentials. ## **Statutory Declaration on Public Benefit** The trustees declare that they have complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission in exercising their powers or duties. ## **Executive Summary** We use Social Media to keep in regular contact with volunteers and organisations working on the ground in the countries we support. This gives us an insight into exactly what is needed and where. It also enables us to confirm to our donors that the aid we send reaches the correct destination. A list of the “People We Support” can be found at the end of this document. We hold regular meetings and work alongside several other charities and groups from Lancashire, The midlands and North Wales. This enables us to make informed decisions on when and where to provide aid and to make the best use of our limited resources. Although some of the aid we supply is sent from the UK, it is often more economical for us to grant funds to charities and groups operating in the areas we support. This money is then used to purchase food and essential items locally, reducing transport costs and supporting their local economy. We obtain original receipts for such purchases whenever possible. **Refugee Relief Ynys Môn** Charity no. 1184413 Email: info@rrym.uk Website: RRYM.UK ## Activities, Achievements & Performance Unfortunately between March 2023 and March 2024, we were unable to rekindle our ambition to independently ship any further boxes of aid directly to other countries, despite having closely monitored the situation in the fervent hope that things may have eventually changed for the better on the customs front. We continued our arrangement with several other larger charities, including The Free Shop who transport items of clothing to the refugee camps in Lebanon, and Cribs International who transport suitable clothing, toiletries and foot wear to mothers and children in Athens, which allowed us to send aid to their depots in the UK. From there it is put on to pallets or loaded on to containers for shipping abroad. The majority of boxes for this period were packed courtesy of our trustee, Carys Thomas, who lives on Anglesey. Another of our Anglesey based trustees, Betty Williams, continued to be the main recipient of donations. Carys collected donations of clothing, blankets and footwear from Betty’s home then transferred the items to her home in readiness for packing. From there they were posted to the relevant depots for loading onto the containers or pallets. Barry and Heulwen continued to raise a modest amount for the charity through the propagation and sale of indoor plants and the sale of home-made produce. We were able to set up a couple of fundraising events similar to those we organised on Anglesey though on a much smaller scale. In June 2023, Heulwen organised a sponsored climb of Yr Wyddfa and managed to raise in the region of £700 for our charity thanks to the generosity of donors. ## **Cash Donations and Collections** We showcase the work of our charity and request public donations on our Website https://RRYM.UK and on our Facebook page refugeereliefynysmon. This year we have received Donations of **£8,746.35 and** Other income of £1,405.90 This includes £920 from charity ‘Muslim Relief’ towards our Lebanon Special Needs School appeal. ## **Fundraising activity** Items which have been donated but which are not required by the displaced people we support are sold either at local events or on social media to raise funds. ## **Talks and Presentations** In October 2023 Betty attended a thanksgiving assembly at one of the local primary schools on Anglesey to raise awareness regarding our charity work. The school had collected funds on our behalf which were later paid into our charity account. In January 2024, Barry and Heulwen gave a talk at their local VI group, Conwy sight loss group, in a bid to raise awareness regarding our work. ## **shipping costs** Due to the difficulty exporting to the EU following Brexit, we have decided not to ship donated items direct to refugees in Europe this year. Our only expenditure on shipping costs was to post 10 boxes of aid, for distribution in Athens, courtesy of another UK charity. ## **Purchasing Aid** Our main expenditure this year has been purchasing essential items and funding vital projects in Lebanon, Uganda and Greece. These were managed on our behalf by trusted volunteers in these countries. **Refugee Relief Ynys Môn** Charity no. 1184413 Email: info@rrym.uk Website: RRYM.UK They included £7,770 to Global Helping Hands to support families living in the Arsal refugee camps in Lebanon, £700 towards the Uganda library project and £500 to charity ‘Biriyani & Bananas’ to distribute aid in the Greek islands. For further explanation and details of their recipients, please refer to the “People We Support” section of this document. ## **Financial Review** ## **Statement of the Charity's Policy on Reserves** We hold at least £1,000 in reserve. Occasionally we are able to supply aid directly to displaced people, either in the UK or in refugee camps, who have been referred to us by a trusted volunteer or group. However as we are such a small charity with few volunteers most of the aid we collect is shipped to one of the following organisations, who we trust to purchase or distribute the aid on our behalf. We receive frequent reports and photographs of these distributions, which we display on our Facebook page and Website as evidence to our donors that the aid has reached its intended destinations. ## **Lebanon Global Helping Hands** At the beginning of March, 2023, we agreed to work alongside a UK based charity, Global Helping Hands, in an attempt to improve the lot of Syrian refugees struggling to survive under the harshest of conditions in the mountains of Lebanon. On 21/04/2023 RRYM paid £2,400 to Lebanon Winter Aid. The total sent covered the cost of some basic food items and other necessities for some of those living in the Arsal camps, as well as three months’ worth of school fees for the special needs class at Dar Al Amal school. On 12/09/2023 RRYM paid £1,778 to Lebanon Winter Aid. Again this included school fees for the special needs class, and necessary items such as food and heating oil for those surviving camp conditions. On 09/11/2023 RRYM paid £1,100 to Lebanon Winter Aid. This sum covered a further three months of school fees for the special needs class. On 06/02/2024 RRYM paid £1,675 to Lebanon Winter Aid. This sum included school fees for the special needs class in Dar Al Amal school. We have been supporting the special needs class since its inception in 2022. The remainder of the money was spent on food and clothes for three Syrian families whose children now attend the school on a regular basis. On 01/03/2024 RRYM paid £500 to Lebanon Winter Aid. This was to cover the cost of extensive medical tests for two young Syrian brothers living in one of the camps in #Arsal. These tests were carried out at the American hospital in Beirut. Sadly both boys were diagnosed with microcephaly for which there is no long term cure. ## **Uganda Awakening Initiative Refugees** On 24/07/2023 RRYM paid £700 to Uganda Awakening Initiative for Refugees. This money was put towards the payment of three months’ of wages for the librarian and tailor who are responsible for running and maintaining the library and tailoring project in Kiangwali refugee camp, and towards the acquisition of a printer/photo copier for the library. ## **Biriyani & Bananas** On 18/01/2024 RRYM paid £500 to Biriyani & Bananas. One of their trusted volunteers then spent some time at local warehouses in Egypt selecting essential aid for sending over the border into Gaza.
