Chaimian's Report for 2024
'What a year it's be8n!° Pidure il.. a room full of vibrant minds, an irresistible whirr of tea and
'scuits befo￿h8nd and the hum of conversation th8t only Ihe camaraderie of the U3A can
deliver. At Kenilworth U3A, 2024 has been nothing short of splendid - a year filled with
learning, laughter, and a fair bit of liveliness. So, let's don our metaphorical mortarboards.
adjust our designer dothe$. fvKed jackets (elbow patches optional) or, whatever takes your
fancy and take a stroll down memory lane.
The evKlenr2 is dear.. good social connedions make for a healthy. happy lrfe. Research has
long shown that people with strong soaal ties are healthier and live longer. Here at U3A, we
specialise in building exactly those connections
the very kind thal add zest to our days
and keep us f￿ling sprightly. Retirement, lovely as il is. can leave us yeaming for the
camaraderie of workplace gossip by the coffee machine. F8af notl At U3A, there's always a
metaphorical water cooler around which to gather, whether you fancy folk dancing, history,
walking, wine-tasting, walercolour painting and many other activities and subjects.
Over the past year, Kenilworth U3A has gone from strength to strength. We now boast over
50 maNellous Interest Groups, ranging from the contemplative pleasures of Art Appreciation
to the spirlted joys of Wine Tasting truly a banquet of intellectual and social delights. And
as a perfect accompaniment, 2024 saw the announcement of our own anematic adventure:
Lights, Camera, Action
Cinema 8t Kenilworth U3A! Thanks to the generous SUPF4)rt of the
Talisman Theatre, we've brought the magic of the silver screen right to our doorstep, starting
wilh the first show in January 2025. Popcom at the ready, or is rt tea and bic¢ies?

Our monthly Open Meetings have featured an array of keynote speakers that would make
even the mosl seasoned raconteurjealous. We began the year with fresh perspeGtives on
the legend of Dr Livingstone in Africa and by February, we were marvelling * the art of
engraving the Lord's Prayer onto a pinhead - a feat that requires both dexterity and a surplus
of patience. Ourjoumey continued along the jazz soaked alleys of Britain's musul history to
ghostly tales from Warwickshire- and what a ride ivs beenl Some talks thrilled us, some...
less so, bLrt all were greeted with warmth 8nd good humour. Our thanks go to Paul Weller,
our indefatigable Speakets, Secretary, for his skill in both securing fascinating guest
speakers and writing up their exploits for The Bulletin. Bravo. Paul you've ke￿ us wide-eyed
and vRII-infomed.
Of course, even the most engaging tdk requires technical wizardry, and here we owe much
to Peter Hc*Yges, our master of the audiovisual realm. His steady hand on the AV controls
ensures we can hear every word (usually) and see every slide (mostly). We applaud your
patience, Peter and your willingness to untangle cables with aplomb.
This yearfs social calendar was as delightful as ever. The summer sun smiled on August's
Summer Lunch at Keni￿Orth Goff Club, and the festive spirit was palpable when we
gathered again in De￿mber for a Christmas celebration that could have wamied the heart
of Scrooge himself. Outings, too, provided a marvellous escape- from the grandeur of
Waddesdon Manor to the nostalgic channs of the Black Country Living Museum - all
orchestrated by the inimitable Alison Lucas and her team. They have our hearty thanks for
the planning, the ￿ordinatIng, and, dare I say it, the occasional shepherding.
Our membership grew by sorne neady 11 % this year. bringing us to a remarkable 685
members - no small feat, and one that owes much to our marketing magic and the tireless
efforts of Membership Secretary Helen Higginson. Helen not only handles the mountains of
paP8N￿rk that come with her role but also greets every new face with wamrth and chann.
And still she found time to organise the Summer and Christmas Lunches for us all.
This year also saw a changing of the guard for The Bulletin: He￿n Sutton joined the
Committee, took up the edrtorial reins and we've been in fine hands ever since. Anlhony
Hartley our webmaster and resident events photographer, having grappled sU￿e8$fullY with
the demise of the national u3a web hosting company in 2023. once again brought his digrtal
and creative juices into play this year. The launch of a new national u3a website template
now gives us signrficant flexibilrty in how we present ourselves to the wide wortd online. The
Kenilworth u3a website is now a joy to behold thanks to Anthony ensuring it remains as
smart and interests'ng as our members.
Management and o>ordination of our 50 plus Interest Groups continues to be in the capable
hands of Leo Lewis and Marion Griew. And we mu* not forget the Group Leaclers who
make them all work. In addition, Leo is also our very efficient Committee Secretary, deals
with most aspects of the administration of our links with u3a nationally and keeps the Tea
Rota running so there are a￿ayS refreshments and biscuits for the Open Meetings- Phew!
Lel's not forget our financial mastemind, Steve James, who joined as Treasurer in March.
With Steve's guidance, we've kepl annual subscriptions below pre-covid levels while
meeting all our obligations - induding claiming Grft Aid. We also owe more than a n¢)d of
thanks to David Paxton for his dIl￿ent 8xamination of our accounts. Your pruden￿,
gentlemen, keeps us all affoat.

As we refiect on 2024, it's worth remembering that the world beyond Kenilworth has faced its
share of tumuh- wars, climale crises, political upheavals - but within our U3A, we've found
solace. support, and joy. Tog8ther, we've leamed, laughed. and lived. As we step into 2025,
we cary with us the friendships, the knowledge, and the indomitable spirit that make
Kenilworth U3A so special. Let's embrace the year of 2025 with enthusiasm-and perhaps
dash of bravado.
And finally, after three glorious years as chaimian of the sKAendid Kenilworth u38, I'm making
way for a new incurnbent. Onward and uward - and don't forget to bring your sense of
humourl

Treasurer's Report for 2024
The excess of expenditure over income (or deficit) on General Activitres for the year was
£527. This was to be expected. as the Trustees were actively trying to manage the cash
reserves down. As a resum, general reserves have redu￿1 from £8730 to £8203.
We are still in a comfortable financial position.
Comparing 2024 with 2023, income from membership subscriptions increased from £5,735
to £6,510 and Gift Aid from £975 to £1,120 .
The gfOWth and expansion of Kenilworth U3A has resutted in substantial increases in most
items of income and expenditure, consistent with the growth in membership.
Outings and lunches revenues have refleded their increased popularity, a3 also with the
interest groups.
It was dec4ded at the 2024 AGM to maintain individual membership subscription rates for
2025 at the same level of £10 (£5 for as50piate member8) as in 2024.
l am grateful to Interest Group Leaders for providing me wth financial informalion so
promptly.
