## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**
## **Background**
The primary objective of Makki Mosque & Education Centre is to promote knowledge and understanding of the Islamic faith as conveyed through its authentic sources. In line with this mission, the Centre responded to the urgent need for an Islamic educational institution within the Muslim community of Leeds. To fulfil this vision, the charity initiated a major project to transform a disused and dilapidated warehouse into a vibrant educational establishment, offering a wide range of facilities and services for the residents of the Pendle area of West Yorkshire and beyond. This development not only created local employment opportunities but also contributed to the regeneration and positive image of the surrounding community.
The building—once a neglected site associated with anti-social behaviour—was purchased in October 2013 and subsequently underwent a complete, high-quality refurbishment. It was redesigned to accommodate a fully functional Islamic primary school, which officially opened its doors in January 2014. The premises include modern classrooms, a main hall, a staff room, a first aid room, a visitors’ room, administrative offices, separate boys’ and girls’ toilets, a washroom, a kitchen, and an on-site car park. The school has the capacity to accommodate up to 50 pupils.
Established in pursuit of academic excellence rooted in strong moral and ethical values, the school upholds the principles of social responsibility, tolerance, and inclusion for all—reflecting the enduring traditions and teachings of Islam.
## **School and Community Development Report**
Since its establishment, the school has undertaken numerous initiatives to raise public awareness of its mission and activities. These efforts have included open days, the dissemination of information, and regular newsletters, all contributing to increased community engagement and a steady rise in student enrolment.
The school offers a broad and balanced curriculum that integrates both religious and secular education. Pupils study the Qur’an, Arabic Language, Islamic Studies, and Islamic History alongside key academic subjects such as Mathematics, English, ICT, Science, and Physical Education. This comprehensive approach ensures that students receive a well-rounded education—developing spiritually, intellectually, and socially.
Makki Mosque & Education Centre welcomes pupils from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds, fostering an environment of mutual respect, cooperation, and harmony. The school places great emphasis on the shared values of community cohesion and civic responsibility, encouraging pupils to contribute positively to society.
Strong working relationships have been maintained and expanded with the Local Education Authority, while partnerships have been established with reputable community service and educational organisations, including a university. Such collaborations have enabled the school to successfully support teachers in achieving NQT (Newly Qualified Teacher) status. The school has also developed productive partnerships with public service providers such as the police, fire service, and health service, promoting safety, wellbeing, and active citizenship among pupils.
A range of extracurricular and community-focused activities are provided outside of school hours for the benefit of students, parents, and the wider community. These include fitness classes, Mathematics and English lessons, science clubs, and Qur’an instruction. Additionally, training sessions and workshops have been delivered to enhance the personal development and achievements of parents, staff, and pupils. These initiatives have been met with great appreciation and support from parents, trustees, and community members alike.
To further strengthen the safety and security of the premises, a high-specification burglar alarm system was installed, along with new perimeter fencing and CCTV cameras. The school’s continued dedication to excellence was recognised in May 2014 when it achieved an _‘Outstanding’_ grading in its second inspection. Investment in new ICT equipment and the acquisition of an additional property have also contributed to the charity’s long-term educational objectives and the ongoing enhancement of facilities.
## **2024 Update**
In 2024, Makki Mosque & Education Centre continued to build upon its strong foundations, maintaining its commitment to educational excellence and community engagement. The charity has remained dedicated to raising awareness of the wide range of educational opportunities it offers, regularly hosting open days to welcome new students and families and to strengthen links with the wider community.
The school’s curriculum continues to provide a balanced and holistic education, integrating both religious and secular studies. Pupils are encouraged to deepen their understanding of the Qur’an, Arabic Language, Islamic Studies, and Islamic History, while also developing essential skills in Mathematics, English, ICT, Science, and Physical Education. This approach ensures that students receive a comprehensive education which nurtures their faith, intellect, and personal growth.
To further promote community involvement, the school has continued to organise a range of activities and initiatives aimed at increasing public awareness and participation. These include
information sessions, newsletters, and community open days. The number of children on roll has steadily increased, reflecting the growing reputation of the school as a centre of quality learning and moral development.
The charity remains steadfast in its mission to nurture well-rounded individuals who are confident in their identity, grounded in their faith, and equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to make a positive contribution to society. Through continued collaboration with parents, staff, trustees, and community partners, Makki Mosque & Education Centre strives to uphold its values of integrity, inclusivity, and lifelong learning for all.
FINANCIAL REVIEW Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves The charity works towards keeping cash balance of £7283.02 after all expenses and there is £17731.55 liability outstanding for this period.
## Statement of Trustees’ Responsibilities
The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees’ Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).
Charity law applicable in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year that give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of its incoming resources and application of those resources for that period. In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to:
- Select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;
- Observe the methods and principles set out in the Charities SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice);
- Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
- State whether applicable United Kingdom Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and
- Prepare the financial statements on a going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to assume that the charity will continue in operation.
The trustees are responsible for maintaining proper accounting records which disclose, with reasonable accuracy at any time, the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011 and the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and for taking reasonable steps to prevent and detect fraud and other irregularities.

## **Year ended December 2024**
I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of Fountains Of Knowledge ('the charity') for the year ended 31 December 2024.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Chari es Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the charity's financial statements carried out under sec on 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under sec on 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
Since the charity’s gross income exceeded £250,000 your examiner must be a member of a body listed in sec on 145 of the 2011 Act. I confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, which is one of the listed bodies.
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by sec on 130 of the Act; or
2. the financial statements do not accord with those records; or
3. the financial statements do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Chari es (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair' view which is not a ma er considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
