Strategic report

We plan to continue our work to increase the number of NHS organ donors and improving the lives of people with kidney disease, dialysis patients and their families, including their mental health when battling the disease. We aim to break barriers and misconceptions about organ donation. To do that we will continue to work with diverse BAME, faith and students' communities by answering their questions about organ donation and kidney health. We will continue providing free community health checks that are combined with organ donation awareness.

As and when lockdown will allow, we plan to re-start our community free health checks. To achieve that, we will work to create closer links and partnerships with community organisations, hospitals and renal units and kidney patients' organisations.

When lockdown will allow, we also plan to organise our annual charity Gala in London. During the gal we plan to reward with a pin all living donors from the UK in that year. This will be as a part of our new planned Living Donors Heroes initiative.

We will use digital media more and outreach people this way. We plan to publish several educational and awareness raising ''call to action'' videos, for example, encouraging people to be a living donor, to be organ donor and to talk to their family about their choice. Our trustees and charity Ambassador will record inspirational messages, which will be posted on our all social media channels and website. We will also record and publish similar inspirational videos regarding mental well-being during COVID times.

As we have been chosen Charity of the Year 20/21 by Miss Generation, we will start cooperation with them on raising awareness of organ donation. We plan to organise meetings with them and record interviews on organ donation with crowned Miss winners and the organisers of Miss Generation.

We will organise ZOOM events when lockdown requires this, instead of physical events. We plan to organise a series of ZOOM events focussing on educating people about kidney health, organ donation and mental well-being tools for kidney and dialysis patients during COVID times.

To raise more awareness and bring more people to our social media and as new supporters, we also plan to organise e-competition where people will be sharing short videos ''I'm an organ donor'' on social media. We will use a hashtag for it.

When the COVID pandemic rules will allow, we plan to visit dialysis patients in hospitals to offer them support, a helping word, tea, coffee.

We also plan to set up an employment scheme, where employers will offer work to kidney patients. This can be part-time, flexible working, work from homework that first with dialysis, medical appointments, and the patient's condition. Working from home and flexible working has been trailed nationally by many employers who might be able to offer this type of jobs to those kidney patients who need it and who struggle to work full time or from the office.

We also plan to continue to increase our partnership numbers, especially with renal units of various

hospitals and with Kidney Patients Associations.

Achievements and performance

We work closely with the NHSBT (NHS Blood and Transplant) to implement a project raising awareness of organ donation among BAME communities. We also provided £5,000 donations to Savayra Foundation, which we raised from supporting us businesses. We provided innovative and pioneering service: free community health checks combined with organ donation awareness and registration of individuals to the NHS Organ Donor Register.

We run 5 events targeting different BAME and faith communities:

  1. In Woodcock House (Birmingham City Council building),

  2. during an evening Gala for Afro-Caribbean and Black communities organized by double-lung recipient Michael Willis, 3. In a Sikh Temple Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick, Birmingham, 4. In the University of Birmingham,

  3. In adult community college to migrant and Asian communities, Scholars School System.

Every year we run our annual organ donation Charity Gala in a prestigious location in London spending £13,549 this year at Café-Royal Management. The purpose of the Gala is to not only raise funds for projects increasing the number of organ donors in the UK, but to also raise awareness and build Global Kidney Foundation community of long-standing supporters. Our Charity Ambassadors: Lilly Iaschelcic, Parveen Rani and Layla Nayafe work hard during the Gala and all year round to increase awareness about the charity, our work and organ donation. Our Annual galas are attended by community, business and health leaders, people from the Art and Fashion world, musicians, actors, employers, and leaders in various fields who then spread the word about organ donation to their respective communities.

Most dialysis patients spend many hours every week in hospital, which can leave patients feeling helpless and dependent on hospital staff. Furthermore, many patients who are independent are not able to perform home dialysis due to housing issues. The Queens hospital dialysis unit is a satellite is one of the satellite units of Royal London Hospital, United Kingdom. In to promote more control of dialysis care to be delegated to patients we aimed to offer shared or self-care programme to all suitable patients to manage their care with nursing support and progress was noted in patients' capability to perform specific tasks related to haemodialysis care. All these patients were also offered to sign up to "Patient View" a web-based programme which enabled patients to review their blood results and physician's letters.

We are also an official sponsor of the British Transplant Games, encouraging people to do sports to improve mental and physical health. Last year the Global Kidney Foundation was chosen by the Games' organizers to be a BAME Ambassador for the Games. Every year our trustees and volunteers attend the Games and speak to the camera and the Games' Organizers official media about organ donation.
