Trustees, Annual Report for Halifax Light Opera Society Juniors
Charlty No 1184294
For the period 1st April 2024 to 31" March 2025
Objecllvès and Actlvftles
As an amateur dramatics souety, Halifax Light Opera Society Juniors (HLOSJ) gives 8 to 18-year olds
in Halifax and surrounding areas opportuniiies to be on stage. help backstage, improve their acting,
singing and dancing skills, boost their corffidenc%, make lrffrlong friends arvj have fun. We perform an
annual musical, Smaller corKXrts and use workshops lo engage and develop their capabilities and ski115
for them to grow as independent, mature and responsible people.
During this period, we ran our annual monologue competition in May called 'Standing in the Spotlighv for
the third year running. We chose a selection of monologues to suit the 'Too Cool for School. theme for
the children to select which they wanted to perforyn. Our judgirYJ panel comprised of three people who
are connected to the so(aety. and as we have done so in the past, we invited one of our trustees to join
the panel. The trustees engaged directly wilh our members and family and friend5 and had the
opportunty to attend as audience members for the competition. The byinner was awarded the trophy,
yhich is given back to the sooety by the previous Winner each year together with a ￿rtificate for them
lo keep and the runner up was also awarded a ￿rtifICate. Our trophy is kindty sponsored by Lois Swales,
our late trustee, who sadty passed away in Decembet 2024.
Calderdale's year of Culture was 2024 and the SoGiety were invited to perform as part of the Culturedale
Projert at the Westgate Arcade in Halrfax on 13th April 2024. The Junicjrs, perfomed a selection of
nurnbers from th8 annual production of Chitty Chitty Bar¥J Bang Jr that were tweaked to work with the
outdoor space and in line with the Flashmb * of perf0rrnan￿. It was a very effectpie way of
perfoming within our local communty and showcasing our talented Juniors. It was well received by
spectators.
During the summer, the committee commenced the organisation of the Juniors, Jubilation 50m
Celebration Ball which was set to take place on 14 Jun8 2025 to comrnemorate 50 years of our Society.
We also arranged for merchandise by way of pens and tote bags to be printed wilh our unique 50
celebration logo arKI sold throLMJhout 2024-2025 in honour of the ￿lebratOry year and to raise funds for
the Sociaty. The Committee wanted to make the year special for all who are ¢urrently involved as well
as those who have been members arKI volunteers over Ihe past 50 years.
We began rehearsing for our Febru￿ 2025 productton of Oliverl in Septembw 2024. The Society were
pleased to welcome a new record number of auditionees although this did lead to a difficult deliberation
following the audition day. wilh lots of children being disappointed that they were not able to take part in
our anniversary production. The So¢iety is considering how it can widen the opportunities for those who
are not successful at gaining a place in the annual produC￿n, to help them build Skills, make friends and
keep connected to the Society in the hope wll buikl confidence to audition again in future years.
The tickets for our anniversary production of Oliver! which was selected to honour first musical that
the Sooety perfomied back in 1975. all sold out in advance of show week.
The current members sang carols at a local WorkirKJ Men's Club during the Christmas periods to raise
funds for the Society.

Through all of this. the Trustees have had due regard to vthat the &xiety has been doing and how it is
of public benefft to th8 children involved and the communty it is located in.
Achlevements and Perfomiance
From the society's fomiation, we have conslstentty had young mernbers who go on to pursue professional
arts careers. We were the first in the area to fom a juniors 4e range society, and from our exampl8
other societies were set up across the Country which led to the NODA listing junior societies under lis
umbrella. HLOSJ were one of the first junior societies accept8d by NODA nationalFy, and have been
since 1976.
In May 2025 vjè were delighted to have been hor￿ured with Ihe Councillorfs Youth Award for the NODA
North East Region for our production of Chrtty Chrtty Ban9 BarKJ Jr, February 2024. The presti9iOUS
award is presented to a society whose perforniance left a lasting impression on the Councillor. It is not
just about being the best show but rather about the overall production that made the Councillor think,
Vlow- that was good theatre.. It is an accolade grven to a produth.on that isn't quTrd(ty forgotten and one
that overcame various challenges. either during rehearsals or the show itself.
One of our greatest achievements is happy arKI confident young people. Whether it is helping them build
their confidence in their school lrfe. to pursue arts careers or enjoying a lrfets'me of amateur dramatics.
young people who have gained from the soaety have now come back ar¥J are co1￿1but1ryj to its future.
The parent of one of our members saKI the following:
°My daughterbecame ￿vOlved Mth HLOSJ forthe first time this yearafter watching her fiiend appearin
the 2024 production of Chilty Chilty Baw Bang. Her fiierny had such a positive experience, and my
daughler loved the perfornian￿ so much. that she also wanted to l)ecome involved. Fnvn the very first
open event for Oliver, to the after show paty. my daughter has had such an amazing expenence. The
volunteers who run this society are completety chiAI cent￿. My daughter was made to feel so welcom8
8nd soon soothed her 9 year old nervesl She has leamt so much and found a group of like-minded
friends. She even Sa￿ hersdf i've found my people,. As a parent I was so proud to see her up on stage
a5 part of such a fantastic prcxluction and would not hesitate for her to be invofved in the future. In an
increasingty online world HLOSJ gKves my daughter an outlet for her pa￿lon for singing and dancing
with othèryoungpeople. I cannot speak more hAJhfy of this an7azing group. l also enjoyed being involved
as a parent, S811ing programmes before sh(Jvs ... the exciting atmosphere created on show nights is
r98ty qurfe infechiwsft"
One of our members saKI the follo¥*ryng:
°Afthough I had onty done 4 shows while at HLOSJ. rt has ￿pated some memories I will cherish for the
rest of my life and has gNan ma morn ConfrtIen￿ than l ever knew I had."
Financlal Rèview
The charity's financial po*tion at the erKI of Ihe period is positive.
For the purposes of the profftabilty of Oliver! Alone, although this is not obwous from the CC18a this was
£2,990.93. This will ensure we can continue to run the society and continue to serve our local community
of children and young peO￿e vtho are passionate al)out the arts.

The income this year is inflated by the ticket sales frwi our s￿ ce￿ratIon Ball which took place in Junè
2025. as most of the outgoings for the ball had not been paid out at the dose of the last commission year
whilst the majority of the ticket income had been received.
Unfortunately, two significant people within the Society passed away in 2024. Their families generously
donated considerable funds for the benefrt of their Society in their memory which is eVIden￿d in the
donations section. Their contributions Vlill be used for additional initiatives over the coming year that we
would not have otherwise had the abilrty lo fund for our young members.
Our reswves ensure we have sufficth funds at our disposal lo offset any unforeseen circumstan￿8 in
which a show cannot take place but rf payments still have to be made in relation to that show despite not
having the income. this is our safety net. We set a minimum amount to cover the projected budget for
the year to protect any necessary experKliture and VR keep SLrfficient reserves in a separate deposit
account from our running account for produL*ions to ensuwe all payments are covered in the event of
shows not being able to be uThJertaken.
We are confident that the society is in a strong position. and aim to maintain this and continue to
produce annual shows that return a profft that can then be used for other activities and initiatives for our
members. We look forward to our next pr(xluction arKI keeping member5 engaged.
Structure, Governance and hlanagoment
HLOSJ is governed by a Foundaticm Model constituti￿ as a Charitable In￿rporated Organisation. In
