Trustees, Annual Report for Halifax Light Opera Society Juniors
Charlty No 1184294
For the period 1°, April 2023 to 31°, March 2024
Objectives and Aclivities
As an amateur dramatics swety. Halrfax Light Opera Society Juniors (HLOSJ) gives 8 to 18-year olds
in Halifax and surrounding areas opportunitES to be on stage. help backstage, improve their acting,
singing and dancing skills. boost their confidence. make lrfe-lorKJ friends and have fun. We perfomi an
annual musical, smaller conorts and use W￿ShopS to engage arKI develop their capabilities and skills
for them to grow as independent, mature and responsible people.
During this period, we ran our annual monologue competition in May called 'Standing in the Spotlight, for
the third year running. We chose a selection of monologues to surt the 'Villians' theme for the children to
select which they wanted to perform. OurjudgirwJ panel comprised of three people who are connected to
the society. and as we have done so in the past, we invited one of our trustees to join the panel. The
head judge returned for the third year which thè Society were delTrghted about. The trustees engaged
directly with our members arKJ family and friends had the opportunity to attend as audience members for
the competstion. The winner was awarded the trcyhy and certific*e and the runner up was awarded a
certrficate. The trophy is retumed to the Society each year by the previous winner and handed out to the
new winner at the condusion of the competition. Our trophy is kindly sponsored by one of our trustees.
During the summer. we produced the 'Greatest Show, Concert which was open to all members and non-
members aged 8-18 years. The success of the small junior sertion in the adult concert the previous year
was the catalyst for the Society to produce its own ¢on¢ert. This was an opportunity for our members to
re¢onne¢t following our annual show arKI also to Introdu￿ potential new members who were interested
in taking part in the next annual show. There was a mix of solos. duets, small and large group numbers
for the young performers to get involved with.
We began rehearsing for our February 2024 production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr in September 2023.
The Society were pleased to welcome a record number of auditionees although this did lead to a difficult
deliberation following the audition day. The tickets sold well once again with most of the performances
being a 'sell out,. It was a challeThJing show, with the director stepping down from the role in November
and two committee members taking up the F)OSt at short noti￿ as ¢￿direCtors. The 'Flying Car. gave th&
technical team a hard task and it was superbly executed during show week. with headlights, wings and
the like. Wé were again supported by the creatives at our local Gollege, Calderdale College who designed
a digrtal backdrop for each of the scenes that were then displayed on large screens at the back and the
sides of the stage. This feft appropriate for the youth element of the show and lit up the stage for the fun
and Gomedic numbers. We are so lucky as a Society to have maintained a relationship with
Calderdale College who have young and aspirirs creatives tho are eager to create innovative sets for
our productions. We wll continue to link with them throughout the coming years as their Contribution is
invaluable.
Through all of this. the Truslees have had due regard to what the Society has been doing and how it is
of public benefit to the children involved arKI the community it is located in.
Achlevements and Performance

From society's formation. we have consistendy had y¢￿Tr3 members￿0 go on to pursue professional
arts careers. We were the first in the area to fom a juniors age range society. and from our example
other soaeties were set up across the country *thich led to the NODA listing junior ￿cietIeS under its
umbrella. HLOSJ y￿re one of the first junior socrelies accepted by NODA nationally, and have been
Sin￿ 1976.
One of our greatest achievernents is happy and confident young people. Whether in helping them build
their confidence in their school lrfe, to pursue arts careers or enjoying a lrfetime of amateur dramatics,
young people who have gained from the have now come back and are contributing to its future.
The parent of one of our membws said the followifWJ:
"IC absolutely loved being a part of the Chty Chrtty Bang Bang cast. this was her very tMn8 being
part of something like this. From the very audition workshop she was made to feel welcome, to the script
r8ad through, to the months of rehearsals where she was supported. to show week which was amazirw.
What an expenencel She's made fnends lorlrfe. and what a fab bunch of people they all are. She didnt
want rf to com8 to an end and cannot wail to hop8fulty be a part of the next pr¢￿UctIOn".
Or* of our members said the following:
When the 2023 'Standing in the Spouight, monologue competitKyJ came around, I pushed down my
anxieties and put my name fonvard. I was delighted when I won and my doubts were quietenod enough
to audition for Chity Chrtty Bang Bang. Having now completed my first show of (hop8fully) many with
HLOSJ, I can safely say that my initial impressK)ns of LMJht Opera did them justice - my time here
so far has been better than I could have 8sked for. It has brought me rt)oms of smiling faces, new
frRndships. new skHls, a deeper understanding of perfc￿Mlng and one of Ihe most rewa¢&M￿ weeks of
my life. l am deluhted I was not deterred entirely by my initial fears because they were lotally
unnecessary," HLOW has neverbéen anything but wam7 and wel(x)mfftg to me, giving me an opp￿Un1ty
to conned with soma of the knndeStp8op￿ I know. I cannot wait to do it all again next yearf.
Flnanclal Revlew
The chanty's fmancial posibon at the end of the period is positive.
For the purposes of the profftabiliiy of Chrtty Chrtty Bang Bang Jr alone. although this is not refiected in
the CC16a. this is £3,322.39. The income from our previous show Madagascar Jr was r￿1Ved in this
fnancial year (2023-2024) wthich means the accounts show a more generous retum. This is in
omparis¢m to last yearfs submission when the income from Madagascar was not re￿Ived and the
profitability. again, was not a true refiection on the financial success in the submi8sion period. It is
anticipated that moving forward the income from the annual show *ryll now be reflected solely in the
financial year the show took pla￿, althO￿h this is somewhat variable depending on how soon the
Income is received. This will ensure we can continue to run the society arKI continue to sep4e our local
community of children ¥KI young people vtho are passionate about the arts.
Other nitiatives lake place throughout the year, indudirKJ our concert and monologue competition where
subscriptions are paid to take part and tickets ￿e sdd. This generates additional income, but on a much
smaller scale to the annual production.
Our reserves ensure we have sUffici￿t fvnds at our disposal to offsel any unf(ween circumstsnces in
which a show cannot take pla￿ but rf payments still have to be made in relation to that show despite not
having the income, this is our safety net. We set a minimum amount to cover thè projected budget for
the year to protect any n￿ssary experKliture and we keep sufficient reserves in a separat& deposit

account from our running account for produclions to ensure all payments are covered in the event of
shows not being able to be undertaken.
We are confident that the society is in a strong position. and aim to maintain this and continue to
produce annual shows thal return a profit that can then be used for other activities and initiatives for our
members. We look forward to our next production and keeping members engaged.
Structure, Governance and Managemenl
HLOSJ is govemed by a FourKlation Model Consts'tution as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. In
our Trustee selection methods we refer to the charty's own gu￿anCe with regard to additional

## **Objectives and activities**

## **The charity's objects**

As an amateur dramatics society, Halifax Light Opera Society Juniors (HLOSJ) gives 8 to 18 year olds in Halifax and surrounding areas opportunities to be on stage, help back stage, improve their acting, singing and dancing skills, boost their confidence, make life-long friends and have fun. We perform an annual musical, smaller concerts and use workshops to engage and develop their captabilities and skills for them to grow as independent mature and responsible people.

## **The charity's main activities**

Halifax Light Opera Society Juniors (HLOSJ) main activity is the operation of a local amateur dramatics society with the promotion of the needs of 8 to 18 year olds who want to be involved with theatre to be part of the process and develop their skills in acting, singing and dancing.

## **Public benefit statement**
