Report of the trustees
For the year ended 31 August 2024
Reference and administrative information set out on page 1 forms part of this report. The financial statements comply with current statutory requirements and the constitution.
Structure, governance and management
Music for Miniatures Charitable Incorporated Organisation is governed by a constitution. The CIO is overseen by a board of 5 trustees. The trustees for the period covered in this report are Martyn Harries, Ben Hargreaves, Adele Haysom MBE, Charlotte Hum, Gill Jones MBE and Katharine Jordan. The board of trustees has the power to appoint new or additional trustees and to remove any trustee, provided the number of trustees does not fall below a minimum of three.
Music for Miniatures has policies in place for Equal Opportunities and Safeguarding of Children.
Objectives and activities
The object of the CIO is to advance the education of children and young people in the art and science of music in all its aspects by the provision of interactive and pedagogical performances, recitals and concerts.
Music for Miniatures provides opportunities for children aged 0-11 and their families to experience professional classical musicians performing in their community.
Our baby-friendly concerts support child development, benefit parent’s wellbeing and bring communities together.
Our work in schools allows us to enrich the lives of children, plant a seed of inspiration and spark a curiosity and passion for the arts.
Overview of our performances
Our performances provide significant benefits to various groups within the community:
-
Children: Live classical music positively impacts cognitive development, sensory stimulation, emotional expression, language skills, relaxation, bonding, and fosters an appreciation for the arts.
-
Parents: Our concerts enhance parental well-being, offering enjoyment and relaxation, as well as creating memorable bonding experiences with their children.
-
Community: We expand the range and quality of cultural activities available locally, bringing people together in their communities.
-
Schools: Our interactive, educational, and inspiring performances enrich the musical life of schools, benefiting both teachers and students.
Our work: three key strands
1. Baby-friendly concerts: We host concerts across Bristol, Bath, Wiltshire, Somerset, and Gloucestershire, aimed at children aged 0-4 and their families. These events provide a supportive, relaxed environment where babies, toddlers, and their caregivers can enjoy live performances by skilled professional musicians.
2. School performances: Our professional musicians perform in schools throughout the UK, enriching the musical experience for students and inspiring them to pursue their own musical interests.
3. Theatrical chamber music: Our touring theatrical chamber music performances combine music, storytelling, and visual elements to create multisensory experiences. These shows make classical music more accessible and engaging for young audiences, fostering a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

Delivering public benefit
Our activities deliver public benefit by providing children and families with the opportunity to experience high-quality live music. We conduct concerts in public spaces and schools, ensuring that children can engage with music and gain knowledge and inspiration. Many of our performances operate on a "Pay What You Decide" basis, enhancing inclusivity and accessibility for all.
The trustees have carefully considered the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit in reviewing our aims, objectives, and future planning.
We predominantly work across Bristol area, Wiltshire, Somerset, B&NES, and Gloucestershire. Over 40 local professional musicians work with us, sharing their talents and inspiring the next generation with a variety of instruments and styles.
Music for Miniatures started giving concerts in October 2014, became a CIC in February 2016 and converted to a registered charity in July 2019.
Achievements and performances (September 2023 – August 2024)
We are dedicated to making live classical music inclusive and accessible for everyone. This year, we delivered 139 live performances, reaching nearly 12,000 attendees.
Our "Pay What You Decide" initiative continues to grow, supported by funding from the National Lottery, Quartet Community Foundation, and Wiltshire Community Foundation. In 2023/24, we expanded our reach into three areas of high deprivation in Bath and North East Somerset, three in Wiltshire, and three in Bristol, serving a total of nine areas. Over 800 individuals experienced live classical concerts without financial barriers.
Our monthly baby-friendly concerts in Bath expanded to Bristol, featuring a diverse range of genres, including world music from Senegal and Uganda, folk, jazz, and classical.
During school holidays, we toured "A Musical Zoo" to four venues in February and "Under The Sea" to eight venues in August. Our Christmas production of "The Snowman" included 12 school performances and 16 public shows.
Our repertoire of Theatrical Chamber music expanded with the addition of "The Owl & The Pussycat," which toured schools and performed in four public venues in August. We visited 28 schools, performing for over 5,000 children, with "Bubble Bach" remaining a highlight of our offerings.
We regularly collaborate with 29 community venues across a wide geographical area, including Bristol, Bath, North Somerset, and Gloucestershire.
Organisational development
During this period, the charity has strengthened its capacity, continuing to work with a freelance administrator and fundraiser, and beginning collaboration with a marketing and PR consultant.
Our funding model relies on ticket sales, donations, and grants from various organisations. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint by employing local musicians and hosting events in communities accessible by foot or bicycle.

Financial review
This year the charity received over £25k of grant funding, which is a marked increase on previous years. This success was a result of increased investment and focus on fundraising. The grant funding was a mixture of restricted funding for Pay What You Decide (£19k) and schools performances (£2.6k), as well as some unrestricted funding (£4k).
The charity is carrying forward nearly £7.4k of restricted reserves into the next financial year, along with £7.5k of unrestricted reserves. The trustees plan to use these reserves to grow the charity further over the coming year, while maintaining the policy of holding a small buffer of at least £1,000 of unrestricted reserves as and when income allows this.
The trustees are keen to move towards monitoring financial performance against an annual budget next year, in a move away from looking at each project/concert as an individual item that must fund itself.
A note from the Chair
The Trustees are very proud to see Music for Miniatures continuing to grow and expand through the tireless, imaginative work of our Artistic Director, Julie Payne. The board are very pleased with the course of the charity this year, with widening variety of musical offerings and the expansion into more geographical areas of social depravation. There has been a strengthening of the charity’s purpose this year as we welcome as a Trustee Adele Haysom MBE adding her experience in governance and education trusts to our board.
Independent examiners
Godfrey Wilson Limited were re-appointed as independent examiners to the charity during the year and have expressed their willingness to continue in that capacity.
