Structure, governance and management

Music for Miniatures Charitable Incorporated Organisation is governed by a constitution. The CIO is overseen by a board of 5 trustees. The trustees for the period covered in this report are Martyn Harries, Ben Hargreaves, Charlotte Hum, Gill Jones MBE and Katharine Jordan. The board of trustees has the power to appoint new or additional trustees and to remove any trustee, provided the number of trustees does not fall below a minimum of three. Music for Miniatures has policies in place for Equal Opportunities and Safeguarding of Children.

Objectives and activities

The object of the CIO is:

Music for Miniatures provides opportunities for children aged 0-11 and their families to experience professional classical musicians performing in their community.

Our baby-friendly concerts support child development, benefit parents' wellbeing and bring communities together.

Our work in schools allows us to enrich the lives of children, plant a seed of inspiration and spark a curiosity and passion for the arts.

Our performances benefit:

Our work broadly falls into 3 strands :

Pay What You Decide

We are committed to making live classical music inclusive and accessible for EVERYONE. That’s why in 2022 we started our Pay What You Decide concerts in areas of high deprivation. The response we had was overwhelmingly positive with large, appreciative audiences and 100% of survey respondents reporting a positive impact on the wellbeing of parents and children. 60% of the audience had never been to a classical concert before. 100% of our audience surveyed said they would like to see more concerts in their community in the future.

Music for Miniatures is the ONLY organisation in the south west dedicated to providing classical music for young audiences, and the ONLY organisation to bring classical music to areas of high deprivation.

We predominantly work across Bristol area, Wiltshire, Somerset, B&NES, and Gloucestershire. Over 40 local professional musicians work with us, sharing their talents and inspiring the next generation with a variety of instruments and styles.

Music for Miniatures started giving concerts in October 2014, became a CIC in February 2016 and converted to a registered charity in July 2019.

How our activities deliver public benefit

Our activities deliver public benefit by providing opportunities for children and families to experience high quality live music. We give concerts and performances in public spaces and in schools so that children can engage with live music and gain knowledge and inspiration. We provide these concerts on a Pay What You Decide basis in some cases. We always try to make our performances as inclusive and accessible as possible for all children and families. The trustees have had regard to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and referred to it when reviewing our aims and objectives and in planning our future activities.

Achievements and performances March 2022 - February 2023

Our popular ticketed baby-friendly concerts continued monthly in Bath and we toured “Let’s Dance” to 12 venues during October and February half terms, and “A Musical Circus” to 14 venues during the summer holidays.

We are particularly proud of our Pay What You Decide project which brought 18 live classical music baby-friendly concerts to over 1,000 people across 6 areas of high deprivation and 3 schools in those local areas. We have a separate income report for this ground-breaking project.

We performed our flagship show Bubble Bach 18 times.

We visited 25 different schools reaching nearly 4,500 school children who might not have otherwise experienced live classical music.

Our Christmas Celebration touring production was performed 33 times in December 2022 and is touring again in 2023 thanks to its continued success.

Report of the trustees

For the year ended 28 February 2023

We work regularly with 23 venues across a wide geographical area including Bristol, Bath, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. Communities we visited are: Bath, Bradford on Avon, Bristol, Calne, Chepstow, Chew Magna, Chippenham, Chipping Sodbury, Devizes, Frome, Keynsham, Larkhall, Melksham, Nailsea, Oldfield Park, Portishead, Radstock, Salisbury, Street, Tetbury, Trowbridge, and Twerton.

Organisational development

The charity has gone from strength to strength this year, increasing the hours of the Artistic Director and being able to fund both some admin assistance and a freelance fundraiser.

We continue to rely on ticket sales, donations and income from grant-making organisations to fund our work.

We strive to reduce our carbon footprint by using only local professional musicians and by taking our concerts out of the city centre to more communities where audiences can access our events by foot or bicycle.

Financial review

The CIO’s income derives predominately from ticket sales, donations, and grant funding.

This year saw a highly successful Christmas show of The Snowman, which resulted in the charity holding nearly £10,000 of unrestricted reserves at the end of the year. The trustees plan to use these reserves to grow the charity over the coming year, while maintaining the policy of holding a small buffer of at least £1,000 of unrestricted reserves as and when income allows this.

In addition, the charity held over £3,500 of restricted funds for the ongoing mid-week pay-what-youdecide projects.

The trustees are happy to continue with looking at each project/concert as an individual item that must fund itself in addition to forecasting longer-term to monitor potential gaps in income in the future.

A note from the Chair

For many children the music they love growing up will be a part of the narrative of their lives. The shared experience of live music performances from inspirational professional musicians, in a relaxed atmosphere gives lasting memories for both young children and adult family members.

The Trustees are very proud of the family experiences that Music for Miniatures presents, reaching more people than ever this year has not been easy and it is only thanks to our audiences and supporters (listed at the end of this document) that we can continue to expand and reach wider communities. Our improved (anonymous) data gathering at concerts shows we are reaching many families who have never experienced live classical music. Our Pay What You Decide initiative means that ALL families can attend with no financial barriers.

We are looking forward to an exciting 2024 with more concerts reaching more people and more children inspired. This is only possible with funding and we are very grateful to those institutions who help us, partner with us and share our vision.
