Annual Report 2021/22

This year has seen us slowly emerge from the restrictions placed upon meeting because of the Covid pandemic. Unlike their sudden arrival, the lifting of restrictions has been gradual and so has the return to any kind of ‘normality’.

The past year has been a time to take stock and prayerfully discern what changes we believe God is leading us into. Certain activities that we did previously have not restarted yet, and may indeed not do so.

We held our Annual Meeting in June this year and spent time together identifying our priorities for the coming months. The headlines from that time together included:

• The need to take time to Re-establish lost relationships and build deeper relationships through regular events such as church family meals, homegroups etc.

• Working more closely together within network and with the wider Christian community.

• Determine the needs in local community? (especially carers/older people) Partnering with others who are serving in our community

The leadership team will be focusing on how we might develop these ideas over the coming months.

Sundays

We restarted our weekly Sunday meetings in Chew Magna and Winford last year, initially with precautions such as mask wearing and maintaining social distancing, not having refreshments after the service etc. As levels of vaccinations increased and Covid cases have fallen we have gradually relaxed those restrictions, although we remain vigilant and respectful of those who remain nervous about meeting.

Winford evening services weekly at 6.15pm and a number of CYBN members take turns in leading worship.

At Chew Magna there has been a significant change in the format of our Sunday gatherings. For some time before the pandemic struck we had been struggling with providing separate groups for our children and young people.

As we restarted meeting in person, we realised that we would not be able to offer these groups with the current number of volunteers and so we decided that we would remain ‘all together’ for the duration of our worship time. This has meant making some adjustments to our time together to make what we do accessible for young and old. This is still a ‘work in progress’ as we experiment with new songs, interactive prayer activities etc.

We are so pleased that we are now seeing a number of new families coming most weeks and there is truly something special about being together, learning together and worshipping together as the whole church

family.

It’s also been a delight to welcome Lissette Pilcher into the church family. We had a wonderful celebration as Mike and Emma brought Lissette for her dedication in February 2022. Look out for more of the same in the coming year!

At Blagdon, we hope to restart monthly inperson breakfast gatherings from the Autumn.

Schools

As restrictions eased John has resumed teaching at Winford, Chew Stoke and Cameley Primary schools.

We have also restarted leading collective worship in our primary schools including Open the Book which is now a regular feature at Winford, Chew Magna and Dundry.

We have continued to provide “It’s Your Move books” as a gift for Year 6 leavers as they move up to their Secondary schools. This year we are providing books to approximately 200 children across 10 primary schools in our area.

It’s also been good to resume visits from Chew Valley School year 7 students who visit local churches as part of their annual enrichment week. After a break due to Covid, Chew Magna Primary School came

to celebrate Harvest in the chapel at Chew Magna in September. Great to welcome the children and staff back!

Supporting others

Over the past year we have continued to support various causes and people. At Christmas and Harvest we were able to send donations of clothes, food and money to the Sisters of the Church in St Pauls, Bristol in support of their work with the homeless.

We have continued to support our friend Andrew Saxton and Pastor Gavril in their work amongst the Gypsy Community in Romania through the Life 2 Romania Charity.

New Opportunities

Over the past year we have begun some urgent refurbishment works at Bishop Sutton including upgrading lighting and replacement of the old gas boiler. These works will be continuing as we seek to make the building more energy efficient and user friendly. We have been successful in obtaining grants for some of these works including the provision of roof insulation.

We are delighted to have started our Renew Wellbeing Café at Bishop Sutton on a Wednesday from 11-1pm. We have a regular team of volunteers and are building relationships with the lovely group of folks who attend.

We are really blessed to have Margaret Blakey as our Associate Pastor. Margaret is exploring the possibility of opening other Renew Wellbeing Cafés in our area.

Partnerships

One of our core values is partnering with others both within and beyond the church. One way we do this is by allowing others in our communities to use our buildings. We have established valuable partnerships with the village Pre-school and the Chew Valley Community Library in Bishop Sutton.

The village toddler group in Blagdon began meeting in our chapel in the village last September. In Chew Magna, our premises are being now being used again by local community choirs, an art group, exercise classes, a monthly ‘Memory’ café and 2 new youth drama groups.

This year we have welcomed new vicars to both the Chew Valley Benefices of churches: Richard (East) and Ian (West) are keen to work together and we have begun to explore how we might support one another in our different locations. This spring we held a joint Lent Course and have begun a joint Messy Church. The first Messy Church was held on Good Friday and we plan to hold further joint events at Harvest, Halloween and Christmas.

Coming up…..

We are planning another weekend away in

September (23[rd] -25[th] ) at Port Eynon on the Gower Peninsular in South Wales. There are still some spaces available. So far 24 of us have booked to go. Speak to John or Cordula if you would like to come. Should be a great weekend!

Thank you

Our thanks go to all those who ensure that ‘church happens’. In particular we need to pay tribute to Cordula , our administrator/treasurer and Carol our bookkeeper. Their efforts go on behind the scenes, largely unnoticed and without fuss. It’s good to record here that both Cordula and Carol generously give their time

and energy to keep us both legal and

financially stable as a charity. The roles that both Carol and Cordula play have expanded significantly as a result of us becoming a network of churches. Please remember them in your prayers as they both are facing challenges in their family lives.

Thanks also to our Leadership Team for their willingness to take on the responsibility of leadership and being trustees. Please remember them in your prayers.

Thank you to the WEBnet Team of Regional Ministers and support staff here in the West of England, for their practical pastoral, Spiritual and administrative support, prayer and wisdom.
