||The year 2021/22 has continued to be a challenging time for the club, as<br>it has been for many music organisations. Like the previous year, both of<br>our main residential festivals were replaced by an online equivalent. Our<br>Spring Fling Online Festival was held on March 20-21 2021 (90<br>attendees) and our Annual Weekend Online Festival on November 5-7<br>2021 (77 attendees).The workshops covered a variety of topics and<br>ability levels. In addition, an online tutor concert was held as part of each<br>of the two weekend festivals.<br>At the Annual Weekend we also introduced an afternoon of educational<br>lectures on topics of interest to our members. We created a YouTube<br>channel in December with these lectures and some additional material<br>created for the club.<br>Our member-led online sessions started in 2020 continued throughout<br>2021/22. There are 4 different sessions covering a range of music and<br>ability each running around 2 a month through the winter months and<br>reduced to once a month in the summer. We plan to continue with a<br>range of online events with reduced frequency as they have proved<br>beneficial even though in-person events have resumed.<br>From May 2021, as restrictions eased, we offered small grants to<br>organisers of in-person regional events to encourage returning to normal<br>and also so that these events could be held in larger venues to maintain<br>social distancing. We provided COVID guidelines for all our in-person<br>events.<br>We organised an in-person Spring Fling event in Newcastle which took<br>place in April 2022.<br>We supported online events and teaching from other related<br>organisations and musicians. A video was made of members playing or<br>singing as part of the Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering online event.<br>We published a quarterly newsletter ‘Nonsuch News’. This provides<br>information about events, educational material and items of interest to<br>those interested in dulcimers. This is sent out to all members.<br>We loaned hammered dulcimers to 8 players over the year.<br>We agreed to find homes for 21 mountain dulcimers made by a hobbyist<br>instrument maker, Ron Moore. 13 have been allocated so far, 6 of which<br>have gone to teachers for community based educational purposes.<br>We have a bank of 24 mountain dulcimers which are used for workshops.<br>They were used once in 2021, at the Shrewsbury Folk Festival, where<br>members of the public had the opportunity to play an instrument with<br>support from an expert.<br>The charity trustees confirm that they have had regard to the guidance<br>issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit, and have followed<br>this in planning and undertaking our activities.|

## Section D                      Achievements and performance 

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** 

We very successfully adapted our in-person programme to an online one. During the year we found that the revised event programme was well received by many of our members. While all our events are open to all, we also found that we had new participants who, due to health, financial, location or other reasons had not been able to attend our in-person events. 

There was an increase in interest in our activities by non-UK players, a number of whom also joined the club. While our primary aim is to serve the British Isles, this diversity is welcome and adds breadth and interest to our dulcimer community. 

Over the year, there was an 8% increase in members to 286. This increase is partly new overseas members finding us through our online events and partly new UK members looking for a new hobby during- or post-lockdown. 

Our return to in-person events was well managed with support for social distancing and COVID guidance. 

We published (4) newsletters for members, and a membership directory. We continue to develop our policy documents and operating plan as a basis for a successful and well managed charity. This year, we conducted a major review of our safeguarding policy, and trustees and committee members underwent safeguarding training. A YouTube channel was set up to publicise the club, provide educational videos, and to showcase dulcimers. 

We held an online members’ meeting in January to discuss ways in which we could celebrate our 30[th] anniversary and further develop community involvement. It was well attended and very useful in driving new initiatives forward.

For the reporting period we had a written reserves policy. This policy sets a reserve of £10,000 for 2021/22, based on potential commitments over the year, as well as cash flow for general expenses.

Maintaining these reserves will not impact our ability to implement club programmes. 

The trustees review the amount of reserves that are required at least annually to ensure that they are adequate to fulfil our continuing obligations.

At the end of the period, we had 286 members. The membership fees (£10 per annum for UK members) covered our basic operating costs. 

Additional variable income is generated by organising our workshop events throughout the year, which support our key objectives. These are designed generally to break even, but as they are popular we often make a small surplus which is used to further the aims of the charity. This year was no exception and all our paid events made a small profit. 

We provided grants for regional events totalling £154.00. 

We purchased an additional hammered dulcimer for use in our popular loan programme.
