## **Report of Trustees to accompany Annual Report and Accounts for the period ending 31[st] December 2020** 

This was the charity’s first year and we now have a set of Trustees to provide a range of skills including animal welfare, financial, legal and marketing. 

The Charity’s first project has a been to produce a set of Standards for the Management and Welfare of Elephants in human care in Southern Africa. This is an important piece of work conducted with the involvement of elephant custodians, regional and local animal welfare and veterinary organisations and international experts in animal welfare. The Standards provide a framework for a process of checking and certification of elephant facilities across Southern Africa and the first edition was published in July 2021 (ISBN 978-1-80068-007-4). 

Funding has also been provided by the Charity for ongoing care of a  group of rescued elephants supported by the Zambezi Elephant Welfare and Conservation Trust (ZEWACT). ZEWACT  has been short of funds as a result of a dramatic drop in visitor number during the pandemic. 

WAAM has also supported research to identify the optimal welfare conditions for elephants under human care and has supported educational activities in Zimbabwe. 

Fund raising activity has been limited by the pandemic but we have received a large number of small donations through the JustGiving website plus large personal donations from the UK. 

The trustees believe the charity return and accounts provide a true and fair record of our activities for the period.
