Annual Report for the year 2021, presented at the

AGM on 21 September 2022 at 1800

Our history

Summary of the network’s main activities during 2021

Supporting refugees in Cornwall: With the pandemic still making an impact, the network continued to meet regularly online throughout 2021. At these meetings there was a sharing of information and resources between the organisations supporting refugees in Cornwall, in particular the families settled under VPRS through Cornwall Council and the community sponsorship groups in Cornwall in Bude and Falmouth. Through regular updates we have heard about the successes in resettlement and where our network can help if there is a difficulty. We have focused on practice and strived to maintain the confidentiality of those resettled. We welcomed representatives from new community sponsorship groups forming all around Cornwall.

Supporting refugees in Europe and beyond:

The Covid 19 pandemic had a severe impact on provision from Cornwall, as it was almost impossible to travel or to get goods through, and Brexit compounded difficulties as regulations changed. Trips were organized and primarily funded by One And All Aid. As soon as it became possible local groups got involved in taking the opportunity to gather up discarded tents and sleeping bags from local festivals. Cornwall has continued to be very generous with donations throughout the pandemic, but storage and transportation has been very challenging.

Campaigning

As the Home Secretary, published the Nationality and Borders Act, members/ supporters of CRRN responded to the public consultations and lobbied their representatives, writing to Cornish MPs, encouraging them to stand against some of the proposals in the Bill.

Truro Community Refugee Support and Charis Steering Group

In 2021, CRRN helped set up and then chaired the steering group to support TCRS as the group works to raise funds, to find a property and to prepare to welcome a refugee family under one of the Home Office schemes. This is ongoing.

Support for individual asylum seekers

The trustees considered individual requests for funding and approved the funding of some translations of key documents to support an asylum claim.

Financial Review:

Total income from 1[st] January 2021 to 31st December 2021: £869.34 Total expenditure 1[[st]] January 2021 to 31st December 2021: £115.85

Total expenditure 1[[st]] January 2021 to 31st December 2021:

Between October and November 2021 CRRN, acting as agent, held funds (£27087.61) for Penwith Welcomes Refugees, a community sponsorship group, from October 2021 until 9 November 2021, until such time as they were able to open their own bank account.

The accounts have been independently checked by an accountant who had no further comments. Most activities that continued in 2021 required no expenditure, due to the restrictions placed on us all by the pandemic.

Thanks from the Trustees

I would like to pass on thanks on behalf of the Trustees to everyone who works to support refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable migrants in Cornwall and beyond. Our special thanks to Kirsty and the team at All Saints Highertown for their support. As we look on at the worldwide plight of refugees, there is still so much to be done.
