**RETFORD LIONS CLUB (CIO) REPORT TO CHARITY COMMISSION**

Membership has remained steady and the club now has 25 members.

Fundraising events have been relatively successful and the local community has continued to provide excellent support to that aspect of the club’s work.

Amongst the fundraising activities there were several highly successful events – Charity Golf Day, annual duck races, Christmas activities and Easter baskets – all of which raised significant funds.

This year the club was able to provide support to in excess of 20 families, who suffered from their homes being flooded in November. At a time when local authorities were slow to react to the situation Retford Lions Club was able to provide some immediate financial support.

The club supported health services in the locality with a significant donation to the local hospice and several other health charities in addition to purchasing specialised equipment for individuals.

The club has always been involved in the promotion of youth activities and has continued with the allocation of grants to several youth projects amongst which was a significant contribution to Girl Guides towards a visit to an International event.

As ever we were able to provide support to the disabled in our community. This year several grants were awarded which enabled individuals to acquire specialist equipment that they otherwise would have been unable to access. As a result their quality of life has been enhanced.

There was considerable support given to disadvantaged people in the community – providing basic living needs such as white goods and floor coverings. Regular donations were made to the local foodbanks and at Christmas gifts were purchased for approximately 120 children who might otherwise have received nothing.

The club continues to carry out environmental projects such as the planting of approximately 5000 daffodil bulbs at several sites in the locality. There is also a very successful project that recycles spectacles for developing countries.

In addition to these grants club members have provided manpower in support of a number of local events including the half-marathon, organised by the local athletic club, and charity collections in support of Marie Curie.
