Structure, Governance & Management

The Orchestra was established in 2007 to benefit the public of Lancashire by giving accessible public concerts in light classical orchestral music from a wide spectrum of musical traditions.

Type of Governing Document: Constitution

How the Society is Constituted: Unincorporated Association

In recruiting Trustees, the Society is heavily dependent upon ad hoc referrals and recommendations from members and stakeholders.

We give all new Trustees a copy of the Constitution and the most recent Trustees’ Annual Report & Financial Statements. Copies of the Minutes of the most recent Trustees’ meetings are also given. We encourage any new trustees to attend Making Music events locally that run training, information and advice workshops to help provide guidance on topics such as audience development, fund-raising and PRS.

Objectives

To advance improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of light orchestral music in all its aspects by the presentation of regular public concerts and such other ways as the trustees see fit.

Executive Summary

Activities, Achievements & Performance

Throughout the year, meetings and representations have been held on behalf of the Promenade Concert Orchestra with Lancaster District Arts Partnership which provides co-ordinated promotion and arts development city and wider region. In addition, when opportunity has arisen, approaches have been made to Lancaster Civic Vision, Morecambe Winter Gardens, Elgar Society NW Branch, Light Music Society, Johann Strauss Society of Great Britain, Morecambe Artist Colony and Making Music. All advertisers and sponsors have received a letter of thanks for their historic support and renewal for the coming season along with new advertisers has been gratefully received. The PCO is a registered member of the Making Music organisation, and as such has involved Howard Rogerson taking part in occasional “Zoom” online meetings.

In May, the PCO presented its most daring concert programme dedicated to one composer, Ernest Tomlinson, who’s centenary it was. Five young and brilliant saxophone soloists were engaged to perform for the first time since 1966, his Concerto for Five, which fuses, jazz and blues with light orchestral. The entire programme was a huge success for the PCO and Morecambe alike, as they received a standing ovation.

Financial Review

The Society continues to run with a surplus in the current account, but this is to ensure we have adequate reserves to cover any exceptional cash outflow and/or unforeseeable losses. A Skipton Building Society Community Saver Account II, and is accruing interest at around 4

This year’s financial accounts reveal that there has been a deficit due to the lower audience numbers and extra music hire costs for the May concert. Morecambe Town Council finally paid its Festival Funding of £2000.

The Friends of the Promenade Concert Orchestra, with a current membership of 10 couples and 17 single, contributes to annual finances by means of subscription. Together with a dedicated team of volunteers, the Friends usually supports the raising of additional incomes through ticket, programme, raffle and merchandise sales at our concerts, though this, understandably, is much reduced this year mainly as a consequence of lower audience attendance. The Promenade Concert Orchestra benefits from the Easy Fund-raising scheme. In 2023-2024, this scheme generated £34 from the small number of supporters and is, as the title claims, an easy way to allow charities to raise money when their supporters shop online, and at no additional cost to them. No funding is available from the Morecambe Town Council for next season, as, despite applying in time, all the funding had been allocated.

The Society has no restricted funds nor designated funds.

The Trustees declare that the Society has given no guarantee where potential liability is outstanding and has no outstanding debts which are secured by an express charge on any of the assets of the Society at the date of the statement of assets & liabilities.

Declaration

The Trustees declare that they have approved the above report and authorised that it be signed on their behalf.
