## **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document**

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

To advance any purposes which are exclusively charitable under the law of England and Wales from time to time by providing grants to charities or other non-profit organisations or individuals identified by the trustees at their discretion focusing mainly on the UK.

The trustees have continued to have regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. Grants of £165,500 were made during the year. The trustees have continued to work with The Marlborough College Foundation (charity number 1061798) to support means tested bursaries for pupils unable to afford fees, and programmes for social mobility through raising awareness of and preparation for university education. The trustees continued to support the furtherance of science and innovation teaching.

The partnership between Fitzwilliam College Cambridge, Marlborough College and Swindon Academy continues. Last year, the project was a great success with thirteen year 12 students taking part, three year 11 students and ten year 10 students. The 2025 project started in January with a visit from Fitzwilliam to Swindon Academy with Marlborough catering the event. The students spent the day working alongside Cambridge ambassadors to solidify their research question, outline their initial ideas and to start to consider their sources. The year 10 project was focused on Global Issues, with students selecting a range of issues including climate change, the impact of parenting styles on children’s behaviour, discrimination, the Russian-Ukraine war, and the corruption of human rights. The year 11 students had a choice between a focus on cryptography and encryption, metabolism or the possibility of one global language. The year 12 students selected their research projects based on their current A-levels and their desired university courses. Their projects explored a range of topics including the representation of disability in literature across time, quantum leaps and cryptic chains, the disparity in access to women’s healthcare vs men’s, the end of the universe, and discrimination within the justice system. The students then delivered their presentations at the end of March at Swindon Academy. Both Swindon Academy staff and Fitzwilliam were impressed with the quality and detail of the students’ work; it was clear that they had paid close attention to the advice of their mentors and were passionate about the project.

Towards the end of the year, interviews for the new year 9 students took place at Marlborough college with ten new students recruited for the project.

The year ended with the residential programme at Fitzwilliam. This was attended by year 9 students to commence the start of their journey and by year 12 students to complete their journey. The residential featured a range of talks differentiated for the year groups. The year 12 students particularly found the time spent with their mentors useful as it allowed them the opportunity to develop their personal statements. As well as university talks, the students took part in taster sessions and college visits, allowing them to gain a thorough insight into life at Cambridge.

Over the last few years, our students have truly valued the opportunity to take part in this project; it has been truly influential in raising Swindon students’ aspirations. Each year, we are seeing more students who have taken part in this project striving towards top universities, including Cambridge and Oxford, with the project giving them the confidence and skills they need to do so.
