(b) To advance the education of the public in subjects relating to sustainable development and the protection, enhancement and rehabilitation of the environment and to promote study and research in such subjects provided that the useful results of such study are disseminated to the public at large. This year the LEAF has focused mainly on our flagship project at Pwani University in Kilifi on the Kenyan coast. We now have a three person team of botanists who run our indigenous tree nursery where we have propagated thousands of seedlings from approximately 50 native species, many of which are threatened with extinction. As part of this we have resurrected the Universities derelict nursery and built a water collection facility off the roof of one of the lecture theatres. We prepared for a big planting event which was actually carried out in the next financial year. This year also saw the LEAF conduct a range of outreach activities, bringing awareness of environmental issues and the importance of nature to a variety of schools and communities. |
