To relieve sickness among police officer’s in the UK by making grants, awards and providing other support to registered, excepted and exempt charities. **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document**

The charity was set up to support and complement other police charities with a particular focus on mental health related issues. The charity now provides direct help and assistance to police officers who suffer from poor mental health – this is via access to a mental health app and through collaborations with Thin Blue Line in Denmark. We have raised funds to support the mental health support for police officers. The trustees have in all dealings had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

## **Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)**

Any grants awarded by the charity are discussed and minuted trustee meetings. The merits of each proposal is weighed up against the core values held by the charity in that the grant is used to support the treatment and mental wellbeing of police officers. This will allow them to be afforded the correct pathway to help them return to full health.

You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about:

- policy on grantmaking;

- policy programme related investment;

- contribution made by volunteers.

The charity continues to develop a network of volunteers to promote the work of the charity and raise awareness around mental health and how it can impact a police officer. We also raise awareness around the help that is available. We continue to engage with Police Federations across the United Kingdom to raise awareness of how the charity can support their officers.

The charity continues to support our ambassadors and we welcome their assistance in raising awareness re the objectives of the charity and making available our mental health guide to those who request it.

## Section D Achievements and performance

The charity continues to raise awareness around mental health related **Summary of the main** issues affecting police officers. Our ambassador network is established **achievements of the charity** now in several forces and welcome packs have been sent to them **during the year** including the mental health guide. The volunteers continue to raise awareness around the issues police officers face and the mental health guide is available for sharing and discussion. One of our trustees continues to liaise with and encourage the ambassadors in relation to fundraising and possible training.

The charity is now recognised for the work that it does in raising mental health awareness and representatives from the charity are invited along to Force Wellbeing Days and events where they highlight the work the charity does but works alongside others. For example, a charity representative in the Met works alongside PD Dexter (wellbeing dog) and attends wellbeing days to discuss openly mental health issues and highlights support paths.

As the charity grows we have been invited to Police Federation Excellence awards as their nominated charity. This affords us the opportunities to speak and raise awareness of how we can support officers. It also provides valuable fundraising opportunities to further the work of the charity.

Section D                      Achievements and performance

We continue to use our website to allow police officers full access to our mental health guide and to provide real life stories from those affected by these issues. This is part of our program in raising awareness around mental health and demonstrating that it is ok not to be ok. We continue to highlight stories and encourage officers to look out for each other, recognise the signs of struggle and to talk to each other. We are finding that more people are sharing their stories with us and this can provide much needed encouragement to others going through the same issues. We have attended several national conferences which provided the opportunity to speak with police officers from across the United Kingdom and internationally to demonstrate how we can help officers. We continue to liaise with Police Services around the United Kingdom in relation to the support that we can provide their officers with access to the Thrive App and encourage them to include the charity as an option for those who exhibit mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety, depression and other mental health distress. . The charity has continued the partnership with Thrive: Mental Health and Wellbeing – which has the only NHS endorsed mental health app. We have purchased 200 licences, which were fully used during this period. We make this app available to any police officer who feels that they cannot seek or avail of help within work or privately. The app has many functions but most importantly users can access counselling with trained counsellors and psychologists. The quarterly feedback indicates that those using the app are getting the help they need and a high percentage show excellent recovery. We intend to renew this purchase We are an integral part of the Police Charities UK umbrella and one of our trustees attends the semi-annual meeting. Here we continue to develop relationships, compliment and learn from each other’s work. This adds to the overall service provided to police officers nationally. We promote the work of the charity on local and national media where appropriate and support those programmes that wish to highlight the difficulties that police officers face. We do so to encourage officers to take that initial step and ask for help. Our online store continues to supplement the funds raised for us and helps promote the charity. All funds raised are used to directly support the work we do. Our fundraising efforts are supported with a continuing partnership with Selkirk gin and our ThinBlueLine Gin and Whisky continue to sell well and raise not only awareness for what we do but we also receive regular donations from sales. We continue to develop our relationship with the Thin Blue Line Denmark and we send to officers from the United Kingdom to the annual police week in Denmark. Here they meet officers from around the world who are suffering from mental health related issues and they spend the week in a safe and healing environment. Officers who have attended have praised the support they received and have found it hugely beneficial. We continue to forge relationships and partnerships with organisations that can provide mental health support, therapies and coping strategies and are trialing a mental health retreat run by a former police officer for a

small group of officers. We will look at how this benefits those attending and if appropriate send further officers. This will allow officers to build coping strategies when faced with poor mental health and gain skills in recognising in themselves and others when they may be suffering. This ties in with the core values of the charity in providing much needed support enabling quicker recovery of officers and helping them remain at work.

As the charity continues to grow, so does individual efforts at fundraising, which not only promotes the charity and encourages discussions around a difficult subject but raises much needed funds.

We have partnered with a police football team and support the purchase of shirts. These have the charities logo front and centre and again encourages discussion, raises awareness and gives more officers the confidence in reaching out for support.

## **Section E                    Financial review**

The charity has built sufficient reserves of cash and continues to bring in **Brief statement of the** a healthy amount of funds through the online store, individual fundraising **charity’s policy on reserves** efforts, corporate sponsorship and our annual Ball. This provides financial stability and allows the charity to grow in a manageable fashion, with the funds to cover additional licences with Thrive, enabling more officers to get the support they need. **Details of any funds materially** The Charity was not in deficit for this financial year. **in deficit**

## **Further financial review details (Optional information)**

The charities principal source of fundraising is through charitable You **may choose** to include donations and online purchases from our store. The charity has also additional information, where entered into a partnership with Selkirk Distillery who sell a charity gin and relevant about: donate a portion of the proceeds to the charity.
