Chairman's Report
Year End 1st March 2021
Just as we were about to complete the 2019-20 year all our activities were cancelled due to the Covid 19 epidemic. We had some limited activities such as litter picking, with equipment supplied by the local council. During the brief summer relaxation of restrictions, we were able to meet outside for coffee once a week, in small distanced groups, but our normal meeting place could not be made covid secure.
Engagement with a local primary school for whom we ran an after-school craft session ceased, as did our weekly wood work session for the Pupil Referral Unit in Scarborough. Young people who had been excluded from main stream education had been learning new skills using reclaimed materials to make their own design of garden furniture.
A grant of £500, secured with the help of Age UK Scarborough CEO was used to fund model kits for members to make at home. We also funded a further kit building programme in early 2021. Our loyal membership in the main continued to pay their membership fees throughout this period and very many thanks for this support. This is a testament to our success to date.
In September 2020 we had an approach from a local business owner to offer us his engineering premises which he now wished to dispose of. We agreed to rent the premises for a period of two years during which we could exercise an option to purchase. This we thought would allow enough time to raise the required finance. The end result being a secure permanent community resource in a convenient location.
At the time of writing this report, negotiations are still ongoing. Dependant on this lease being concluded is a £10k grand from The Sirius Minerals Foundation.
Some of the local Social Subscribers based in GP Practises in the locality have expressed interest in referring people to us who are interested in our activities so our membership will benefit from an uptick as soon as we can return to regular meetings.
We sadly had one of our external Trustees resign due to other business demands but were also able to invite a local retired GP who accepted our invitation to join as a Trustee. She has a wealth of experience as a volunteer and has settled well into the role, bringing new ideas to the table.
So, despite all the trials and tribulations of the past year we look to brighter future as we move out of the social restrictions.
