Objectives and activities Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document World Bhangra Council – Objects. - 1) The advancement of education of Bhangra. i) To promote, sustain and increase individual and collective knowledge and understanding of Bhangra. ii) To advance the education of the public in the subject of Bhangra, through continued research and practice. - 2) The advancement of the art form of Bhangra. i) To promote the art form of Bhangra and its associated heritage and culture from which it belongs to, through performance, Art and Creativity. Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects: The main activities of the World Bhangra Council are to advance the education of the public in Bhangra by promoting, sustaining and increasing knowledge and understanding of Bhangra through continued research and practice. Our success is based on active dialogue between artists and academics. Achievements and performance: Activities were mostly online due to the continued national UK COVID lockdowns. - 1) Support and celebration of the ‘Bhangra Lexicon’, the world’s first ‘visual dictionary’ of movements found within the artform of Bhangra. Carefully compiled by the ‘World Bhangra Council’ chair and Huddersfield-based dancer, Hardeep Sahota. The Bhangra Lexicon took form in three ways; - 2) An online exhibition that grew out of Sahota’s initial research and gives vibrant visual form to dance movements through the fascinating medium of light painting. Dancers from a number of different disciplines – including Irish dancing and breakdancing as well as Bhangra – performed key moves whilst holding coloured lights in semidarkness, so that every nuance of their actions can be traced using long exposure photography. Sahota collaborated with photographer Tim Smith to create compelling and dynamic images that give physical, even sculptural, form to the fleeting nature of the dance. The flowing movements translate into bright, almost calligraphic strokes. We do not envisage this at the moment but if in the future the trustees see fit to open an account, we will also make sure that we have an independent examiner report on the accounts.
