Annual Report 2022

International Initiative for Theoretical Ecology (IITE)

http://iite.info

Our planet's biosphere is under increasing pressure from pollution, climate change, overexploitation and land-use change. Biodiversity is rapidly declining. How will the biosphere respond, how societies be affected, how can this change be steered to the benefit of humanity? IITE aims to promote advancement, teaching and application of theoretical ecology in order to address these questions.

Activities and Achievements

The International Initiative for Theoretical Ecology formed itself during 2018 and registered as a charity in England and Wales on 14 June 2019.

This report covers the period from 23 February April 2022 to 9 May 2023

During the reporting period, our main public facing activity has been the development of a series of online seminars run through Zoom (iite.info/seminar/). All speakers have volunteered their time, and by using free tools have incurred no financial cost. These have been free for all to access, and have attracted a large and diverse collection of researchers in the audience. To date, we have run 46 such seminars, with presenters from across the world and from a range of career stages and including some of the most esteemed researchers in the field. The talks have been popular and this has allowed us to develop a significant email mailing list and twitter following. All talks have been posted on YouTube, where we have had over 19,500 total views. While the rate of growth has levelled off, likely with the resumption of in-person seminars, they are still well attended.

All activities of IITE were led by its trustees, served the public benefit, and were consistent with the charity's objective.

Outlook

A consideration over the next year will be the relationship, if any, of the IITE with other emerging organizations that share similar objectives.

Governance

IITE has a simple governance structure: the board of trustees is identical with its membership, all work is volunteered, and all decisions are made in (virtual) meetings of the board of trustees in line with the published constitution.

Financial Review

IITE had neither income nor expenditures, and had no assets, funds, or liabilities during the reporting period.
