Contribution made by
volunteers
Para 1.38 The charity is heavily dependent on
volunteers for the upkeep and maintenance
of the hall, community café, children’s play
area and grounds.
Volunteers are also actively engaged in a
number of Fundraising events.

managed a number of successful grant
applications and delivery of projects to

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 This was the fourth full year of the
Wolverley Memorial Charitable Trust and
the second “normal” year after the lifting of
Pandemic restrictions
The number of regular hirers and “one-off”
private hires for parties and other events
continued to increase.
One of the most significant achievements
in the year was the continued development
of the Community Café, extending the
opening hours and the range of services
provided, with the aim of establishing the
Café as a community hub. A well-attended
“Carols at the Hall” concert was held for the
first year. This will now be an annual event
The Charity was successful in obtaining a
“Warm Space” grant allowing the
Community Café to provide affordable food
and refreshments during the Winter Period
to help people with the cost of living crisis
and prevent isolation.
The Charity also joined the national “Chatty
Café” scheme and entered into a
partnership agreement with the local
Allotment Society.

2

The Charity started the process to lease the vacant Pavilion on the site, returned after temporary use by the Wolverley Lawn Tennis Club, by seeking expressions of interest from local groups. A structural survey and valuation was obtained. The Charity entered into discussions to agree a lease arrangement with the newly formed Wolverley Tennis Charitable Incorporated Organisation for its use of part of the land owned by the Wolverley Memorial Charitable Trust under a long lease from the Parish Council.

Achievements against
objectives set
Para 1.41 The Charity’s main aim continues to be to
broaden and extend the use of the Hall and
other facilities by more organisations and
individuals in the furtherance of the
Charity’s objects.
The Charity’s 5 main objectives for the year
were to:
1. to continue the internal refurbishment of
the Memorial Hall, making it an attractive
environment for the benefit of local
residents.
2. to develop the Community Café into a
warm, welcoming space offering affordable
food and refreshments
3. to explore further opportunities for Grant
funding
4. to maintain all the Charity’s facilities to
ensure they are safe and available for local
residents throughout the year and to
maximise their use.
5. to develop the strategy and operational
framework of the CIO, including the review
of policies and recruitment of new staff and
volunteers.
All these objectives were achieved.

3

Performance of fundraising
activities against objectives
set
Para 1.41 Fundraising income met targets for the
regular car boot sales, children’s funfair,
and craft fayres.
The operation of the Community Café for
these events enabled increased fundraising
through the provision of food and
refreshments.
Investment performance
against objectives
Para 1.41 Not applicable
Financial Review
SORP reference
Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 The Charity’s overall financial position at
the end of the year remains healthy. The
Trustees planned the use of some of the
Charity’s Operational Account Reserves to
complete the refurbishment of the Memorial
Hall. Those reserves have been
replenished in 2024.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 The charity’s reserve policy is to hold a
level of reserves in its general fund at least
equal to a year’s estimated projected
expenditure, as a contingency.
Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 Reserves held at the year-end totalled
£79,734; comprised of Unrestricted
Reserves of £6,796 and Restricted

Additional information

SORP reference
The charity’s principal
sources of funds (including
any fundraising)
Para 1.47 Sources of Income are from rental of the
Hall, sub-letting of some of the grounds
and fundraising events, including car boot
sales, fayres, festivals and craft shows.
Investment policy and
objectives including any
social investment policy
adopted
Para 1.46 Not applicable
A description of the principal
risks facing the charity
Para 1.46 The principal risk facing the charity is the
need to replace the current Hall in the
medium-term.
The significant refurbishment of the exterior
and interior of the Hall has extended the life
of the current building but it will need
replacement before it reaches the end of its
useful economic life.
The other main risk to the Charity is the
need to ensure income generating activities
continue to meet the running costs of the
Hall, Children’s Play Area, Community Café
and grounds.
