Trustees’ Annual Report for the year ended 31 December 2021

Management:

The freehold title of the hall is vested in Thorner Victory Hall which is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. The activities and management are delegated to a Committee of trustees, whose members stand for election every year at the annual general meeting.

Objectives:

The objective of the management committee is to run and maintain the village hall for the benefit of the residents of Thorner.

Review of progress and achievements:

The last AGM was held in October 2021, at this time we were slowly coming out of the Covid pandemic, however infection rates in the Leeds area were still high.

With the continuing uncertainty with Covid, neither the Comedy or Beer Festivals took place in 2022. We can hope that without any further restrictions and continued improvements in everyone’s confidence to attend large events, they will be back in 2023.

By April with Covid infections dropping and things returning to normal we did hold a number of events. Namely a Steve Forbert Concert, an evening of Poetry and the Summer Ball – this latter event was our contribution to mark the Queens Jubilee. In the autumn we are planning a Special Evening in tribute to David Walmsley and an Octoberfest style event.

Basically with no fundraising events (as referred to in the notes to the accounts) the accounts show a loss. The loss is largely due to charging depreciation with no compensating fundraising for future remedial works. ‘Actual’ loss (i.e. cash outflow) is c. £5k. Looking at 2022, lettings are back on stream and reserves remain strong.

Statement of Objectives for the future:

With lettings getting back to a near-normality we can finally look forward to investing in future improvements to the hall. The first of which is concentrating on energy efficiencies with replacement of the energy-hungry main hall lights. We also hope to complete the much delayed bar refurbishment. Looking further to the future, our focus this year and the coming year will be on controlling, monitoring and reducing our overheads and looking at what green measures we can work towards introducing.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Thorner Victory Hall

I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 31 December 2021 which are set out on pages 3 to 6.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the 1993 Act)) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

Basis of the independent examiner’s report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
