## **CHAIR’S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30TH JUNE 2023**

## Dear Supporters,

I am delighted to present the annual report for DogsnHomes Rescue covering the year ended 30 June 2023. This year has been marked by incredible achievements and milestones, made possible by the dedication and commitment of our team, volunteers, and supporters.

One of the most significant highlights of the year was the aid mission to Ukraine, undertaken by our trustee, Gary Baxter, in July 2022. Gary joined a multinational team in Ukraine to assist in the spaying and neutering of dogs and cats. Despite the challenging circumstances, the team successfully spayed and neutered over 1,600 animals, contributing to the welfare and population control efforts in the region. Gary's journey took him through towns such as Bucha and Hostomel, where he witnessed the aftermath of the atrocities committed during the occupation by the Russian army. He encountered heart-wrenching scenes, including a large shelter housing over 3,000 dogs and 200 cats, located near Chernobyl and the Belarus border, areas deeply affected by the conflict. Gary's first hand experience underscores the vital importance of our work in providing aid and support to animals in crisis-stricken regions.

By July 2023 DogsnHomes had facilitated the delivery of over 145 tonnes of aid for companion animals in need. This accomplishment was made possible through the generosity of organisations like the Humane Society International UK, as well as the unwavering support of our donors and fundraisers. The impact of this aid extends far beyond material assistance as it provides hope and relief to countless animals and communities facing adversity.

In addition to our international efforts, DogsnHomes remained steadfast in our commitment to rehoming dogs surrendered in the UK and from Portugal. Throughout the year we successfully found loving homes for 168 dogs, ensuring they receive the care and attention they deserve. This achievement reflects our ongoing dedication to animal welfare and our belief in the transformative power of adoption.

As we reflect on the past year's accomplishments we are reminded of the profound difference we can make when we come together in support of a common cause. None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our team, the generosity of our supporters, and the resilience of the animals we serve.

Looking ahead, we remain committed to our mission of rescuing and rehoming animals in need, both locally and globally. With your continued support, we are confident that we can build on our achievements and create a brighter future for animals everywhere.

Thank you for your unwavering support.

Warm regards,

Jane Stevenson Chairperson

## **REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30TH JUNE 2022**

## **Trustees’ responsibilities in relation to the financial statements**

The charity trustees are responsible for preparing a trustees’ annual report and financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).

The law applicable to charities in England and Wales require the charity trustees to prepare financial statements for each year which show a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that period. In preparing those financial statements the trustees are required to:

- Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;

- Observe the methods and principles in the applicable Charities SORP;

- Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

- State whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;

- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business.

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the applicable Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations, and the provisions of the trust constitution. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

The trustees are responsible for the maintenance and integrity of the charity in accordance with legislation in the United Kingdom governing the preparation and dissemination of financial statements.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF THE DOGSNHOMES RESCUE**

I report on the accounts of the DogsnHomes Rescue for the year ended 30th June 2023 set out on pages 6 to 11.

## **Respective responsibilities of the trustees and the examiner**

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts.

The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

- examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act,

- follow the procedures laid down in the general directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act), and

- state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner’s report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner’s statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

- 1 which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

   - to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and

   - to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act,

   - have not been met; or

- 2 to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **NOTES TO THE ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30TH JUNE 2023**

## **1    Accounting policies**

## **(a) Basis of preparation and assessment of going concern**

The accounts (financial statements) have been prepared under the historical cost convention with items recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant notes(s) to these accounts. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued on 16th July 2014 and the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Charities Act 2011.

The charity constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS 102.

The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the trust’s ability to continue as a going concern.

## **(b) Funds structure**

Restricted income funds are funds which are to be used in accordance with specific restrictions imposed by the donor or trust deed. There is a single restricted income fund, the Humane Society International Income Fund, restricted to providing support to the charity’s fifth journey from the UK to deliver food and supplies for companion animals in Ukraine, via partner charities in Poland, and to ensure transfer to end users in Poland and Ukraine who are in need of support for companion animal welfare needs due to the war in Ukraine.

Unrestricted income funds comprise those funds which the trustees are free to use for any purpose in furtherance of the charitable objects. Unrestricted funds include designated funds where the trustees, at their discretion, have created a fund for a specific purpose.

## **(c)**

## **Income recognition**

All income is recognised once the charity has entitlement to the income, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount of income receivable can be measured reliably.

Donations are recognised when they are received or have been communicated in writing with notification of both the amount and settlement date. In the event that the donation is subject to conditions that require a level of performance before the charity is entitled to the funds, the income is deferred and not recognised until either those conditions are fully met, or the fulfilment of those conditions is wholly within the control of the charity and it is probable that those conditions will be fulfilled in the reporting period.

Interest on funds held on deposit is included upon notification of the interest paid or payable by the bank.

## **(d) Expenditure recognition**

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that settlement will be required and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.

9

## **DOGSNHOMES RESCUE Registered Charity Number 1183775**

## **NOTES TO THE ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30TH JUNE 2023**

All expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis. All expenses, including support costs and governance costs, are allocated or apportioned to the applicable expenditure headings in the statement of financial activities.

## **(e) Tangible fixed assets and depreciation**

All assets are capitalised and valued at historical cost. Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates estimated to write off the cost or revalued amounts, less estimated residual value, of each asset over its expected useful life on a reducing balance basis.

Motor vehicle 25% Plant and equipment 25%

## **(f) Related party transactions and trustees’ expenses and remuneration**

The trustees all give freely of their time and expertise without any form of remuneration or other benefit in cash or kind. Expenses paid to the trustees in the year totalled £620, _(2022: £844)_ . These expenses were made up of one trustee’s reimbursed expenses as follows.
