PANTRY FOR BLACON CIO (Known as Blacon Beacon) Registered charity number 1183763

Annual Report for the year ending 31[st] December 2021.

Pantry for Blacon is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, registration number 1183763

Governance and management

There were 6 trustees of the charity in 2021:

Through 2021 we employed a Store Manager 16 hours per week, and for 6 months a Kickstart employee who worked as Store Assistant for 25 hours per week. Additionally, from February 2021 we employed an assistant to provide computer support to local residents for 12 hours per week, alongside the activities of the charity. This proved most valuable, helping people with such things as CV writing, driving theory test practice and basic computer skills. We managed to receive funding to recruit an Administrative Assistant for 16 hours per week, and she began with us in December 2021. Our work would not be possible without the great support of our volunteers, who are involved with many different roles, including maintaining stock in the store, serving members when they attend, packing fruit and veg into bags ready for collection, and preparing sandwiches and other food for families attending for holiday meals.

Objectives

The charity exists to relieve food poverty in Blacon, Chester, and also to promote health, through the provision of good quality food at an affordable price, and encouraging healthy diet through education on food preparation.

Activities

Through 2021 we continued to serve members with weekly bags of ambient and fresh food. In return, they make a weekly contribution towards the costs (£3 per individual and £5 per family). We began to give members a choice (within in different food categories) of what they could have, to cater for different tastes.

We also continued to provide Foodbank parcels for those eligible, and some of those recipients we encouraged to become our members. We had to cap our membership at 50, due to lack of storage space, and so we began to build up a waiting list.

2021 began with Covid restrictions continuing, and so we continued delivering meals and activities to local families in the spring term. This grew as well to two meals and activities provided during the Easter holidays. At May half term we provided a recipe bag, will all the ingredients to make a nutritious meal for the family, alongside activity bags. We did the same at October Half Term. It was a delight in the summer holidays, to be able to cater for families on site, so they could also take part in activities being provided in Holy Trinity Hall, Church and grounds. At Christmas, we returned to delivering Christmas dinners with activities to families.

We became involved with a couple of other projects through the year as well. The Slow Cooker project was delivered jointly with Cheshire Food Hub, providing residents with slow cookers, and then regularly giving them recipe bags to use in the slow cooker. The Steps Challenge was funded by Sports England to purchase pedometers which were given out to residents with the challenge of who could do the most steps in one day, with prizes for the winners.

The Blacon Art Trail was a project in which 20 different groups or artists produced a painting which was displayed outdoors around the community. A map of these was produced (alongside details of local history places of interest) and the map was both printed and published on social media, so people of all ages could (and did) follow the trail around the community. This work was followed up with workshops in the lead-up to Christmas, to make Christmas decorations.

Our expanding and continuing work meant that we quickly outgrew our original premises, so plans we made to expand the room. Thanks to a grant from National Lottery Community Fund, and support from Holy Trinity Church the work started early autumn 2021, and was completed before Christmas. The ongoing relationship with Holy Trinity Church, who own the hall where we operate from, was formalised with a Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties in December 2021, and to be reviewed annually.
