THE TED SENIOR FOUNDATION

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST MAY 2021

The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31st May 2021. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Objectives and aims

  1. To preserve, protect and advance the health of the public by reducing the incidence of suicide by young adults, in particular, but not restricted to; young adults attending, or undertaking a course of study, or contemplating a course of study at university, college or other tertiary educational institution through, inter alia: Education of the public, including young adults, educational institutions, relevant professionals, opinion formers and others, as to the mental health risks associated with young adults, and how the same may be reduced by various means including, but not limited to, raising awareness, grant making, the commissioning of relevant research, the dissemination of relevant research and other relevant material. The provision of mental health support for young adults by various means including, but not limited to, grant making, the development of a trained and focussed volunteer base, the utilisation and deployment of relevant professionals, engagement with and improvement of pre-existing support mechanisms in universities, colleges or other tertiary educational institutions, and the provision of additional support function.

  2. To preserve, protect and advance the health of the public by the provision of support and/or counselling services to individuals who have experienced bereavement by reason of the suicide of young adults, in particular, but not restricted to; the suicide of young adults attending, or undertaking a course of study, or contemplating a course of study at university, college or other tertiary educational institution.

Significant activities

In relation to purpose 1) we have delivered a bespoke pilot scheme at the University of Bristol, Ted's Friends through which we provided specialist training to six students at the University. Following the successful completion of the pilot, we have set up a similar programme within the University of Bristol Medical School where we will provide training to 13 students to act as mental health champions within their respective sports teams. We have identified 3 prospective partner Universities as suitable for Teds Friends schemes as part of the extension of the program in 2021-22.

We have continued to raise awareness of suicide and mental illness through online campaigns and the creation of online content designed to assist those bereaved by suicide.

We have facilitated change within the Swansea Medical School with regard to the mandatory provision of well-being support during student Fitness to Practise procedures, and aim to enable other medical schools in the UK to make the same changes in 2021-22 and thereafter.

In relation to purpose 2) we continue to contribute to two national organisations: the Support After Suicide Partnership (SASP) and The Alliance of Suicide Prevention Charities (TASC). Our work with SASP supports their aims of providing specialist support to those bereaved by suicide. TASC is an alliance of charities formed to create a combined approach to suicide prevention, a collaborative forum in which we share best practice.

In relation to both of our stated purposes, we have employed a Charity Operations Manager, a full-time member of staff, to lead and support on the delivery of our objectives.

Public benefit

The trustees have each read The Charities Commission documents, 'The Public Benefit Requirement', 'Public Benefit: Running a Charity' and 'Public Benefit: Reporting'. They are satisfied that TSF's purposes and related activities are beneficial for a 'sufficient section of the public', and have given regard to the guidance 'when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant'.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Grantmaking

The Ted Senior Foundation will seek to provide grants to a range of organisations, enabling them to undertake or continue work within the mental health and suicide prevention sector in alignment with the Ted Senior Foundation purposes namely, to preserve, protect and advance the health of the public by reducing the incidence of suicide by young adults, the education of the public, including young adults, educational institutions, relevant professionals, opinion formers and others, as to the mental health risks associated with young adults, the provision of mental health support for young adults, and the provision of support and/or counselling services to individuals who have experienced bereavement by reason of the suicide of young adults.

We will communicate all grant funding opportunities through our online channels, namely our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn accounts.

In order to ensure that we are only funding worthwhile and effective initiatives that are aligned with our core values, we will consider the following criteria.

Grant Funding Criteria

In order to be eligible for grant funding from TSF, the potential beneficiary must be:

Focused on increasing awareness and understanding of the importance of wellbeing and good mental health; or focused on working with people affected by specific issues, including but not limited to depression, suicidal thoughts or bipolar disorder; or focused on supporting those bereaved by suicide

An organisation (rather than an individual) with at least two volunteers.

We will consider each application on an individual basis, scoring each request based on: The amount requested; Stated objectives; Key Performance Indicators; Grant duration; Payment schedule; and Alignment to TSF values

Volunteers

In addition to the trustees, we currently have 6 volunteers who contribute significant time and effort to furthering the charity's aims. The number of volunteers will shortly rise to 13 with the inception of our program. These are "Ted's Friends"; students at Bristol University who have received TSF-funded mental health first aid training and are the nominated and visible points of contact for their peers in each of their respective sports clubs.

Employee

In November 2021 a full-time Operations Manager was employed to handle charity administration, facilitate roll-out of TSF's flagship scheme, Ted's Friends, and to co-ordinate and manage fundraising initiatives

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE

Charitable activities

Ted's Friends: We recently concluded the pilot year of TSF's flagship scheme, Ted's Friends, which was launched at the University of Bristol at the start of the 2020/21 academic year. The scheme provided TSF funded mental health training to six ambassadors within university sports teams. These Ted's Friends acted as the conduits between students and existing mental health services at the University and actively promoted and fostered a safer and more positive environment for club members. We completed a full review and evaluation of the pilot programme which resulted in clear benefits being linked to the programme being delivered. This is in line with our stated purpose of reducing the incidence of suicide by young adults, in particular, but not restricted to; young adults attending, or undertaking a course of study. We have expanded the programme for the 2021/2022 academic year to include the University of Bristol Medical School, training 13 medical students to become Ted's Friends and champion good mental health within their sports teams.

Supporting those Bereaved by Suicide: In Spring of 2020 we joined the Support After Suicide Partnership and have worked with them to create content to support people who have bereaved by suicide. We continue to fulfil our commitment to granting them £5,000 a year to support those bereaved by suicide, in line with our grant making policy. This is in line with our purpose of providing of support and/or counselling services to individuals who have experienced bereavement by reason of the suicide of young adults.

Awareness: We have continued to grow our online presence through consistent social media campaigns and promoting positive content. Given the continued disruption caused by the pandemic, in-person fundraising and awareness events have been difficult to deliver.

Fundraising activities

The total fundraising income for 2020-21 was £12,772 versus forecast £38, 500 for the year. The shortfall was due to the impact of coronavirus, which resulted in the cancellation of Easter and other fundraising events.

Future Plans: Having successfully delivered and evaluated the pilot year of the Ted's Friends Scheme, with very promising results, and having expanded the programme to include the Bristol University medical school, we are now aiming to engage with 3 additional universities to implement Ted's Friends networks in 2021-22.

We have facilitated change within the Swansea Medical School with regard to the mandatory provision of well-being support during student Fitness to Practise procedures, and aim to enable other medical schools in the UK to make the same changes.

A further increase in the number of Ted's Friends Schemes is planned for 2022-23.

At 31 May 2021 the positive cash position was £194,964, £192,845 was held in unrestricted funds.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Investment policy and objectives

The charity has no investment policy or objectives outside of its purposes as set out in its governing document.

Reserves policy

We intend to maintain our reserves at a level which is at least equivalent to £165, 000, which will provide funding for the planned surge in our activity in 2021-22 and 2022-23 which we anticipate will coincide with a temporary 2 year period of diminished income for the Foundation, and an increased contingency related to employment-related expenses.

A total reserves figure of £165,000 being £115, 000 to fund anticipated growth during a temporary 2 year period of diminished income, and a £50,000 contingency.Trustees recognise that with the employment of an operations manager, the Foundation needs to reserve a contingency sufficient to cover employment costs in the event of a significant shortfall in funding during the ongoing pandemic, and its short-medium term aftermath.

The reserves that we have set aside provide financial stability and the means for the development of our principal activity.

The Board reviews the amount of reserves that are required on a quarterly basis to ensure that they are adequate to fulfil our continuing obligations.

PRINCIPAL RISKS

In 2020-21, £12,772 of the charity's £52,837 gross income came from fundraising events. It is expected that 2021-22 will continue to see a fall in this source of income with the main fundraising events again cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic. There were concerns about the level of other sources of income including donations which we expected to fall in 2020-21 below the 2019-20 level of £18,554 due to the economic uncertainty arising from the ongoing pandemic. However Donations exceeded expectation - we received £39,934.

Trustees have identified and quantified significant risks in relation to forecast income in 2021-22 and 2022-23.
