the physical and natural environment of the
Irvine Road Orchard, Colchester
The CIO was registered in May 2019 in
anticipation of taking on a fifty year lease for
the Orchard. We expected to take on the
lease in eady 2020 but Brexit and Covid19
slowed building on the part of the Orchard
allocated for development, and the leasè was
not enacted until 2015121.

investment<br>IRCO is run entirely by volunteers with an<br>Para 1.38 estimated annual contribution in 2021 of over<br>Contribution made by  460 hours :<br>volunteers<br>[For reference, calculations were]<br>Site management: 3 events (Oct – Dec) x 8<br>people x 2 hours  + 12 months x 6 hours (ST<br>+ RM) = 120 hours<br>Open Day, interpretative panel, brochure = 60<br>hours<br>Communication, fundraising and engagement:<br>½ hr per week (newsletters, FB) + wreath<br>making = 40<br>Trustee duties, Finance, Administration, fund<br>raising: 30 hours (4 meetings x 6people  x<br>2hrs + 4 hrs x 50 Chair) = 250<br>Other<br>Achievements and Performance<br>SORP reference<br>We signed the lease for the Orchard in May<br>(after 5 years of negotiations)<br>Summary of the main  Covid curtailed our activities until June when<br>Para 1.20<br>achievements of the charity,  we held a very successful Open Day with 120<br>identifying the difference the  people attending and £650 raised. In the run-<br>charity’s work has made to  up we also:- setup a Local Giving fundraising<br>the circumstances of its  website; produced an information leaflet<br>beneficiaries and any wider  brochure; and installed an interpretative<br>benefits to society as a  panel.<br>whole.<br>Soon after the Open Day, we received our<br>first £500 grant (from the People's Postcode<br>Lottery) and later in the year, with the help of<br>volunteer, benefited from our two wreath<br>making courses, our first in-aid-of events.<br>We surveyed and labelled the trees in<br>September with the help of a local expert to<br>inform future management and planting.<br>Work parties recommenced from October and<br>we succeeded in clearing a pathway around<br>the hedgerow edge to the site, removing ivy,<br>freeing up some fruit trees from surrounding<br>growth, preparing an area for new planting<br>and knocking back the brambles.<br>**----- End of picture text -----**<br>

## **Financial Review**

Review of the charity’s  Para 1.21 We raised over £1.5k during the year and<br>financial position at the end  incurred expenditure of £337 leaving our<br>of the period financial reserves at £2973 at the end of the<br>year.<br>Statement explaining the  Para 1.22 We will need to maintain financial reserves<br>policy for holding reserves  but do not expect our normal running costs to<br>stating why they are held be greater than £1k per annum. We could run<br>the operation, for a time, on considerably less<br>if we had to. We will also fundraise for specific<br>projects we wish to run. The active engagement of<br>the new residents abutting the|





Orchard will minimise this risk. 3) There is always a risk that the current landowner changes his current collaborative approach and looks to find ways to break the lease, returning the site to his control, or sells the land to someone who does likewise. Maintaining the relationship with him will be important for the Trustees to pay attention to 4) As we take on the lease, we will want to increase the community engagement and continuing Covid restrictions continued to limit the extent to which we can do that.
