## **The Cambridge Russian-Speaking Society’s Board of Trustees Report for 2024**
Dear Members of the Cambridge Russian-Speaking Society,
We had a busy 2024 with many memorable events and social gatherings that we organised for members and non-members of CamRuSS as well as continued supporting displaced Ukrainians in our area by delivering ESOL classes and social/cultural opportunities. Thanks to guidance from the Patrons, help from our Trustees and volunteers, and the continued support from our members and partner organisations, we were able to carry on our charitable work and deliver impactful results of which we can be proud.
In 2024 we organised **20 cultural and social** events for the members of our community in different formats (in-person, hybrid and online), **attended by over 1100** visitors. In addition, we held several cultural and social events specifically supporting our Ukrainian community.
**Talks:** We continued with _The Geography of Russia series,_ featuring talks by leading experts: _Prof Otto Habeck_ on environmental change in Russia and _Dr Eugene Simonov_ on the environmental consequences of Russia’s war in Ukraine (many thanks to Olga Tutubalina and Sayana Namsaraeva for organising).
The _“Russia in My Life”_ theme stood out this year, with personal reflections by scholars in Russian language and culture _Prof Anthony Cross_ and _Prof Irina Kirillova_ , complemented by _Rosanna Moseley Gore’s_ presentation of her book _Songs from the Suitcase,_ and _Marina Burrell’s_ talk on the Baltic States, enriched by personal memories and period artefacts. Many thanks to Ksenia Afonina, Rachel Polonsky, Yelena Karl, Alla Viktorova, Vera Tsareva-Brauner and Sayara Thompson for organising these events.
We also had literary and music history talks, such as _Anna Berman’s lecture about Russia’s Great women writers from the XIX century, Prof Marina Frolova-Walker’s insightful talk on Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 and Irina Yakutenko’s presentation on Living in Discomfort._ We are grateful to Yelena Karl and Dmitry Mevzos for organising.
We concluded the year with a fascinating talk by _Prof Simon Franklin on The Cultural History of the Russian Language_ , marking the 25th Anniversary of CamRuSS’s inception as a voluntary group and 5 years since it was awarded its charitable status. Many thanks to Ksenia Afonina, Andrei Bejan, Ekaterina Onatskaia, Olga Tutubalina, Sayara Thompson among others to make it a memorable evening.
**Music events:** There were two sold-out performances: by the Ukrainian pianist _Daria Golovchenk_ o and a unique gusli and piano recital by _Olga Shishkina_ and _Olga Elbourn_ , each drawing over 100 attendees. (Many thanks to Katya Onatskaia for organising and Andrei Bejan for his help with the promotion).

_**Social events:**_ Our social _**gatherings**_ such as the _May Day BBQ_ in Wandlebury Park, _White Nights_ dedicated to Bulat Okudzhava’s centenary, _BBQ/Mushroom Walk in Thetford Forest_ were very popular, each of them attended by 50-60 people and brought together members of our community of diverse nationalities. We were especially pleased to see many Ukrainians joining us at these events. We are very grateful to our volunteers Dima Mevzos and Tatiana Yurasova for their help in organising them.
**Projects:** We launched the _“Adopt a Book from John Barber’s Library”_ fundraising project and will continue it in the new year. The late Prof John Barber was a long-standing supporter and the first Honorary Adviser to CamRuSS, who kindly bequeathed his personal library to CamRuSS.
We also continued keeping in touch with WW2 veterans and their families in the UK and Russia; sending them cards on important occasions. Many thanks to Yelena Karl and Ksenia Afonina for their help with this.
We are grateful to Tanya Yurasova and all the teachers who continued to deliver the Residential Russian and Ukrainian Language Summer School in August 2024. This year it brought together almost 70 students from across the UK, learning both Ukrainian and Russian.
## **CamRuSS for the Ukrainians 2024**
We successfully secured several grants, enabling us to continue running ESOL classes for displaced Ukrainians in our area until April 2025. This was possible thanks to the continued support from St Andrew’s Street Baptist Church, Cambridgeshire Skills, Cambridge City Council, as well as independent donors and volunteers.
Our trustees and volunteers organised social and cultural events for Ukrainian refugees in Cambridgeshire, including graduation ceremonies for the ESOL classes, a guided bus tour to Sutton Hoo (in collaboration with Karina Tour), and an outdoor outing with a barbecue in Thetford Forest. These events were made possible thanks to the generous support of South Cambridgeshire District Council, CamRuSS trustees, and helpers.
There was also a curator-led group visit to the Cambridge Museum of Classical Archaeology in November 2024, organised by Ksenia Afonina and Andrea Verdasco.
We estimate that we managed to offer education and social/cultural adaptation support to over 400 Ukrainians in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire.
We raised **£74,330** in external grants/dedicated funding and **£5,500** in donations and fees, **a total of £79,880** , from which the major part was spent on the provision of language courses, and the rest for the information/cultural/social events.

particular Ksenia Afonina, Alexandra Argunova, Olga Tutubalina and Olga Starobinskaya for making this happen.
It was decided to close down the Help Line for Ukrainians due to a lack of demand in the last year.
## **Governance**
Our Board of Trustees was represented by _Sayara Thompson (Acting Chair and GDPR), Ksenia Afonina (Vice-Chair and Development /Support for the Ukrainians projects), Olga Starobinskaya (Treasurer), Katia Onatskaia (Events and Membership Officer), Olga Tutubalina (Events and Technical Support), Alla Viktorova (Events, Communications and ESOL classes), help Alexandra Argunova (Safeguarding Lead and Secretary), Sayana Namsaraeva (Projects) and Andrei Bejan (Events and IT support)._
Honorary Advisers: _Janar Davletov, Yelena Karl, Tanya Yurasova, Alona Gunko._
There were monthly meetings of the Board of Trustees, and the updates were sent to a group of our charity’s distinguished Patrons: _Sir Tony Brenton, Libby Howie, Prof Anthony Cross, Dr Rachel Polonsky and Prof Emma Widdis._
We were delighted to welcome _Prof Simon Franklin_ to join the Patrons’ Circle of CamRuSS in November 2024.
We used the Trustees’ WhatsApp group for ad-hoc communication and consultation, alongside other WhatsApp sub-groups for specific activities, such as finance, concerts and events, administration, etc.
## **Finance and Membership**
Our new Treasurer Olga Starobinskaya, who joined the Board of Trustees in 2024, introduced a new professional accounting system XERO, which made the accounting and bookkeeping process easier, more efficient and transparent.
Due to the high turnover thanks to grants, this year we had to have our accounts checked by an Independent Examiner before submitting them to the Charity Commission. We are pleased to report that this has been done successfully and with a positive outcome. Many thanks to Alona Gunko (former Treasurer), Olga Starobinskaya (Treasurer), Ksenia Afonina and Sayara Thompson for their help.
Our main streams of revenue came from membership fees, ticket sales from events, and donations. **Membership fees generated £1,930** (2023: £1,737). Although the number of members remains at a similar level to the previous year (135), the increase in revenue was a result of the higher membership fee introduced in April 2024. We currently have 136 members (24 of them are new members). We are grateful to all our members who continued staying with us and we are delighted to welcome all new supporters who joined in 2024.
Our revenue from **entrance fees was £5,671** (2023: £5,884). After deducting expenses and honorariums for performers, the total events **surplus left was £2,788** .

We are very grateful for all **donations (£5,168 + £500 for the Ukrainian Project** ) received this year, which ranged from £5 to up to £5,000 from an individual donor.
This year, thanks to the new financial strategy, introduced by the Treasurer we placed the accumulated reserve funds in the savings account which earned us £560 in interest.
Our turnover of **£91,199** (2023: £88,909) increased, mostly because of the funding that we secured in 2023 and new grants received in 2024, some part of which is allocated to cover designated costs in early 2025.
The corporate costs, governance and overheads for running the Charity (Administrator, IT, Web hosting, Zoom Licence, Insurance, Fees and Subscription and other expenses) comprised around £5,000. Although we finished the year with a surplus of £11,407, this is part of the grant which is ringfenced for ESOL classes in Jan-Apr 2025.
## Operations and Communications
Communications were delivered by our website, regular newsletters (predominantly fortnightly), Facebook and Instagram. Our website showed an average of 1,200 visits monthly and our Newsletter has **2,572 subscribers** . By the end of 2024, the CamRuSS social media accounts grew the number of followers as below: Facebook - 1,900 (1,801 in 2022) and Instagram 421 (392 in 2023).
Our operational activities were supported by the valuable help of the part-time Administrative Assistants: Dylan Johns – in March-April 2024 and Elvira Churyumova who stepped back into this role in November 2024 after her maternity leave in 2021. In the absence of an Administrative Assistant, we have had help from our Honorary Adviser Yelena Karl and Trustees Alla Viktorova, Ksenia Afonina and Sayara Thompson. We are very grateful to all of them for their hard work.
Our website redevelopment project is still ongoing and is being delayed due to circumstances beyond our control. We aim to complete it in 2025.
Special thanks to Ekaterina Antipina-Turner for the design of our new CamRuSS bags.

## **Financial Summary CamRuSS 2024**
The Trustees of The Cambridge Russian-Speaking Society are very grateful to all its members for their continued support.
CamRuSS charity appointed a new Treasurer in January 2024 (Olga Starobinskaya, CGMA CIMA). The trustees agreed to introduce a new accounting online software Xero which improved our financial control and reporting by efficient record keeping, bank reconciliations and budgeting tools. Our accounts are prepared on a cash basis due to the historical approach, not being registered as a company and low revenues which is in line with the Charity Commission rules.
## **Income in 2024**
Total Income in 2024 - £91,199 (2023: £88,909) and is detailed below:
- Entrance fees - we organised 20 events in 2024, including 12 fundraising events. Entrance fees for CamRuSS organised events - £5,671 (2023:
- £5,884). After deducting expenses and honorariums for performers, the Charity covered its governance and administrative costs and contributed to the English classes for Ukrainians funding. The total event surplus - £2,788.
- Donations received - £5,168 (2023: £1,305).
- Membership fees - £1,930 (2023: £1,737).
- Other income - £860 - Lloyds bank interest and advertising (2023: £2,425 – please note that
- income in 2023 included £2,310 after the theatre ticket sale by CamRuss charity and which was paid to the Theatre group in 2024).
- External Restricted Grants £79,880 (2023: £77,554). We received funding from Cambridgeshire Skills, grants from the Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire District Councils for ESOL classes, Graduation ceremonies and events to support Ukrainians fleeing war in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire. £15,000 received in December as part of Cambridge City Council funding will be spent in Jan – April 2025 term. This funding for English classes is not shown on the chart above.
## **Membership fees**
The Trustees reviewed the membership fees in 2024 and raised the fees to support the administrative costs of running the charities and supporting our charitable actions. This year the total membership fees - £1,930.06:

## **Donations**
We received the most generous donation of £5,000 - we are very grateful and appreciate this donation very much. We also received small donations from the sale of books from John Barber’s personal library. The total donations this year - £5,168.
## **Events organised by volunteers**
The volunteers planned and organised 12 interesting and engaging fundraising talks and events.
The total event fees for 2024 of £5,670.55 minus expenses incurred for organising events of £2,883.47 gave us a surplus of £2,787.08. These fees were used to cover our administrative and governance expenses and the costs of running English classes.
Thank you to everyone who organised and took part in these events.
## **Expenses in 2024**
The total expenses in 2024 - £79,792 (2023: £76,828). Our charity continued to provide support and English classes to the Guests from Ukraine.
- Governance and administrative costs - £3,035 (2023: £3,827)
- Event costs including the honorarium payment to the presenters - £2,883 (2023: £960)
- Web IT, subscription fees, insurance and postage costs £1,614 (2023: £1,636).
- Expenses for Maevka and veteran events - £110
- £789 paid out in 2024 to a Ukrainian fund (this funding was received in 2023).
- English classes and events for Ukrainians cost £71,361 (2023: £68,748) - to help our guests from Ukraine learn the English language and culture and reimburse ESOL teachers and classroom hire. This cost is not shown in the chart above.

## **English classes and activities for Ukrainians**
CamRuSS Trustees and Volunteers applied for several grants to continue the provision of English language classes to the Ukrainians, cultural adaptation/integration events and graduation ceremonies. The total amount of funding received in cash in 2024 is £79,880 (including the most generous anonymous donation of £500) and grants of £74,050.
Please note: CamRuSS received £15,280 in 2024 for ESOL classes in January – April 2025 term.
The Charity also had £8,805.70 ring-fenced as of 31/12/2023 (from ESOL grant received in 2023) to cover the costs of ESOL classes in January –April 2024 term. We paid out £9,526 in January 2024 for the work completed in 2023. This amount was shown in the surplus in 2023 accounts. The costs shown in the table are separately showing revenues and expenses for 2023, 24 and 25 (the accounts are done on a cash basis).
## **Notes for Surplus in 2025**
The financial position for the year (ending on 31 December 2024) is a surplus of £11,407 (2023: £12,001). This surplus will be spent to cover costs related to ESOL classes in January-April 2025.
£15,000 are the restricted grant funds (Cambridge City Council) for English lessons for Ukrainians which will be used to cover the costs in 2025. The Trustees accept that any contributions towards the costs of English classes for Ukrainians will be covered by the Hardship Fund and any future fundraising activities.

## _**Hardship fund balance**_
A CamRuSS Hardship Fund was created in 2022 to support refugees fleeing war in Ukraine who reside in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire. The total funds recorded in the hardship fund as of 31/12/23 was £7,238.09. The Trustees are keeping the hardship fund ringfenced for any potential shortage of funds to cover the costs of English classes in the future.

I report to the trustees on my examin8tion of the accounts of the Cambridge Russian-
Speaking Society ICamRuSSI forthe yearended 31 December2024.
Responsibilities and basls of report
As the charity trustees of the Charity, you are responsible for the preparation of the
accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 I'the Act'l. I
report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under section
145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the
applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 14515llbl of the
Act.
Independenl examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my
attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any
material respect:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of
the Act- or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the
ex8mination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a
proper understanding ofthe accounts to be reached.
