The Cambridge Russian-Speaking Society’ Report for 2022
Dear Members of the Cambridge Russian-Speaking Society
It has been an unpredictably challenging year for many of us, and CamRuSS was no exception. However, thanks to the continued support of our members and generous efforts of our volunteers we can be proud of the results.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 we launched online consultation meetings with volunteers where we discussed how we can support refugees arriving from Ukraine and provide humanitarian aid to those affected by the war. We held 12 meetings in the year which led to many new community initiatives.
From late March until December we organised 28 events for Ukrainian refugees in Cambridgeshire, aimed at providing information support and fostering their social and cultural adaption to life in the UK. With the help of our professional teachers, teaching assistants and course coordinators we delivered two ESOL courses classes. The first course April-July was run by volunteers, and the second September-December with support of the South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) and we will continue doing so in 2023 with the kind support of the SCDC. Since its launch in early May, our telephone helpline has been providing guidance to newcomers to Cambridgeshire, and many of our volunteers have been addressing queries in the Cambridge4UA Telegram chat that now has circa 1000 members. Our volunteers provided interpreting services and organised free social and cultural events for new community members from Ukraine, such as a visit to Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra performance and guided tours of the Scott Polar Museum, among others. We facilitated the distribution of 150 free Vodafone SIM cards to Ukrainian refugees at our events. More than 60 people contributed to the success of these important and demanding community projects.
On a wider cultural scale, we held 20 events, exploring our shared heritage and marking the anniversaries of prominent scholars and artists such as Yuri Lotman, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Korney Chukovsky, Marina Tzvetaeva, Viktor Tsoi as well as the decipherment of the Rosetta Stone. Over 1000 people visited our cultural events.
Thanks to the kind contributions of its participants, we raised over £5000 in support of the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine (DEC)/Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal and the CamRuSS Hardship Fund for Ukrainians. The key fundraising events were a piano recital by Vitaliy Pisarenko in March, Boris Akunin’s talk in April and Marina Tsvetaeva’s evening of poetry and music in October.
During the year we secured 5 grants for the amount of £20,252.80, four of which were in support of our initiatives for Ukrainians.
Our Board of Trustees was represented by Ksenia Afonina (Chair), Yelena Karl (Vice Chair and Events Coordinator), Alona Gunko (Treasurer), Katia Onatskaia (Membership Officer), Sayara Thompson (events and projects) and Oxana Gerasimova (Secretary). Elena Richer stepped down from the Board earlier in the year. Honorary Advisers: Tanya Yurasova, Janar Davletov, Jelena Carter, Firuza Melville.
There were monthly meetings of the Board of Trustees and the strategic brainstorm session in late November with the group of our charity’s distinguished Patrons: Sir Tony Brenton, Libby Howie, Prof Anthony Cross, Dr Rachel Polonsky and Prof Emma Widdis.
Our operational activities were supported by the valuable help of the part-time Administrative Assistant: first six months by Laura Thomas and from September Elena Shampanova stepped into this role. Elvira Churyumova continued assisting with preparing event recordings and occasional administrative duties.
The Cambridge Russian-Speaking Society’ Report for 2022
Our financial position remains secured, although most of the income this year was spent on supporting displaced Ukrainians and other UK charities which provided humanitarian aid in the Ukraine (DEC, True Russia). We created our own dedicated Hardship Fund to support local community projects for Ukrainian refugees. Our income has grown by over 60% predominantly due to the grants and ticket fees from in-person events. However, the outgoings increased over threefold when compared to last year in order to cover direct costs, support of the community initiatives and the new website redevelopment project.
Our membership fees stayed unchanged since 2015 (£12 single, £18 family). 38 new members joined our charity during the year which comprises a total of 134 members by the end of 2022.
Communications were delivered by website, regular newsletters (predominantly fortnightly), Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Our website showed around 1000 visitors monthly, circa 3000 subscribers to the newsletter with 350 new community members from Ukraine. By the end of 2022 the CamRuSS social media accounts have 1801 followers on Facebook, 318 - Instagram and 161 – Twitter.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our members, Patrons, Trustees, Honorary Advisers, team of administrators and volunteers for their amazing support this year. I am delighted to report that we managed to set up successful collaborations with the following partners: St Andrew’s Street Baptist Church, South Cambridgeshire District Council, Jesus College, Cambridge City Council, Workers’ Educational Association (WEA), the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), National Careers Service, Cambridge Regional College, Cambridge Sustainable Food, Cambridge Refugee Resettlement Campaign, Cambridge Ethnic Community Forum and The Scott Polar Research Institute, among others and we are most grateful for our productive joint efforts in the course of this year.
Dr Ksenia Afonina
Chair of the Board of Trustees
Financial Summary CamRuSS 2022
The Trustees of the Cambridge Russian - Speaking Society are very grateful to all its members for their continued support, especially in these challenging times. 2022 has been an eventful year for our charity, among other notable events, we have launched a project of updating charity’s website and created a CamRuss “Donate” payment button to attract donations in support of running our activities. A CamRuSS Hardship Fund has been created to realise projects in support of the Guests from Ukraine, arriving in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire, fleeing war. In 2022 we collected £4,875 in donations from the events organised by our dedicated trustees and volunteers in the course of the year.
Please can we take this opportunity and say a heartfelt thanks to all our patrons, members, volunteers, organisers, and all CamRuSS friends for their help and support.
