Structure and Governance Issues:
Derbyshire Stroke Centre was registered with the Charity Commission as a CIO on 28/05/19.
We aspire to hold high standards of governance and adhere to the Charity Governance Code.
Although we are a relatively small charity we identify with and adopt all seven principles. However some have a particular resonance with us as an organisation for example Equality, diversity and inclusion and Integrity which both reflect our values and culture.
We feel that our board members have a wide range of skills and knowledge and all have lived experience of some or all of the following: Stroke, dementia, head injury, caring, being cared for, mental health issues, anxiety, psychological and cognitive problems, mobility and communication disorders.
This ensures that they have a unique perspective on being a user of the charity’s services and have a genuine empathy and drive to deliver a fully inclusive organisation that is both responsive and person centred delivering only the highest standards of support.
The Objects of Derbyshire Stroke Centre are:

The relief of sickness and the preservation of health among people living with the effects of a stroke or neurological health condition (survivors and carers)

To assist in the treatment and care of persons suffering from mental or physical illness as a result of a stroke or neurological health condition or in need of rehabilitation as a result of such illness, by the provision of facilities for rehabilitation and recreation.

To promote and protect the physical and mental health of families affected by stroke or neurological health conditions through the provision of support, education and practical advice

To advance the education of the general public in all areas relating stroke and neurological health conditions

To preserve and protect the health of people affected by stroke or neurological conditions by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities, support services and equipment not normally provided by the statutory authorities.
Trustees
All trustees give their time voluntarily and receive no remuneration or other benefits Trustees are appointed by invitation.
There are currently 5 trustees, all of whom are stroke survivors. Trustees meet on a bimonthly basis to discuss staffing, fundraising, service delivery, budgets and general Charity business

Charity Balls
We had two Charity Balls in 2023. For the first held in July we tried a new venue at Ringwood Hall but found the facilities to support people who use a wheelchair to get around were less than ideal. In usual Centre fashion we made the best of it, took our own chairs, provided some of our own food for people with swallowing issues and still managed to have a fabulous time. Sarah entertained for us and she was brilliant.
Our second ball was back at the Casa. The prices have risen but they have the space we need to spread out, dance and have a great time.
Danny came with his band and they were totally amazing! I think everyone had a really good time.
Transport
We purchased our 6[th] Bus to meet the ever-growing demand for transport to get to the Centre.
Without our wheelchair accessible vehicles the majority of our service users now would not be able to get to the Centre. Our first bus the Toyota is now 20 years old and should really retire but we are not in a position to do that as we have a waiting list of people who would like to come but not enough room. Most days the buses need to do more than one pick up each.
Activities
We continued to enjoy a wonderful variety of daily activities. Everything from belly dancing, drumming and a wide range of singers and entertainers.
We are lucky enough to have a core group of amazing singers who know us well and the sort of music we like and who are prepared to join in with the fun and make sure everyone has a good time. We booked Rik Gaynor as Elvis to come and entertain and he didn’t disappoint. We had a Prince themed Purple Day and Claire and Doug put on an excellent show for us.
We had our first ever Panto – Alice in wonderland with M&M Productions. We felt this was important on many levels. A lot of our service users used to enjoy shows or panto before they developed a health condition. Often now they are worried about going to a show without support.
A visit out for many people is very difficult or even impossible due to concerns about accessible venues, transport or struggling with continence issues for the whole length of a performance. Some people struggle with being disinhibited and families get embarrassed if they shout out or use ‘inappropriate’ language. Our Centre is a safe space to enjoy a show without any of those concerns.
We continued to hold theme weeks and included plenty of dressing up, singing dancing and having a lot of fun.
BBQ
Our annual BBQ was a success, very well attended and lots of fun with music all day and nice enough weather to be outside – a rarity for 2023.
A lovely opportunity for family and friends to come along to the Centre and see what we are doing and take part in the day. The Centre was decorated with a beach theme all week complete with seagulls and looked amazing
Gala Day
Grassroots Referee Ian Booth very generously decided for one season to donate all his match fees to the Centre. In addition to this whenever he went to a match he took with him a collecting bucket. In addition he wanted to host a football Gala Day at Staveley Miners Welfare Football Club.
Ian was inspired to do this following one of his friends Matt Stallan having a stroke at a very young age. The Gala Day was a huge success with teams coming from across the East Midlands to take part in the football tournament. Ian has planned this to be an annual event to raise funds for our Centre.
Radio Derby Make a Difference awards
Debbie and Julie were delighted to be nominated by Ita for BBC Radio Derby’s Make a Difference Awards. We were told we had been shortlisted along with 3 other people in our category and were invited to attend the awards Ceremony at Pride Park. The run up to the Awards was fun, there was filming and recording at the Centre, with clips going out on local TV. Julie also was invited to Radio Derby to talk about the Centre and what we do here. It was such a lovely opportunity to make more people aware of the Centre, our service and the support that we can offer here.
The awards ceremony was lovely, hearing about people and organisations across Derbyshire who make a difference in their communities. We were delighted and slightly stunned when it was announced that we had won our category, we hadn’t really expected that but were very proud to represent everyone who helps to make Derbyshire Stroke Centre such a special place.
Staffing
We are so lucky to have the most amazing team of drivers and support staff who make sure that everyone who attends the Centre has a wonderful day from start to finish. Finding care staff continues to be a challenge across the UK and we have experienced the same issues not being able to always find as many staff as we would need. However I think our service users would agree we certainly have the best team in Derbyshire!
Finances
After such a challenging 2022 financially, it was clear in order to survive we needed to make significant changes.
After years of being the cheapest day care provider on Derbyshire County Councils Framework of providers at the end of 2022 we brought our prices for DCC in line with other providers.
This was a difficult decision to make as we know that it puts a strain on the budget that has been allocated by DCC and often a person has to receive less care at home in order to spend time at the Centre. However, without these changes the Centre would not have continued for the benefit of everyone who attends. The changes to our costings did not come into effect until June 2023 but was backdated to April 1[st] .
It very quickly became clear that this was the right decision as we can see a steady increase in our funds again which ensures we are sustainable long term.
Ensuring we are able to cover costs allows us to continue our charitable work of providing free or subsidised places to people who do not get a budget. In addition, during 2023 as the care crisis in Derbyshire continued we had a number of people who found themselves living in residential care as no carers could be found to support them at home. Once this happens any budget for day services automatically stops. We feel that the friendships and support often built up over many years should be allowed to continue for as long as needed and therefore continue to offer charitable places once a service user goes into care.
