Structure and Governance Issues:
Derbyshire Stroke Centre was registered with the Charity Commission as a CIO on 28/05/19.
We aspire to hold high standards of governance and adhere to the Charity Governance Code. Although we are a relatively small charity we identify with and adopt all seven principles. However some have a particular resonance with us as an organisation for example Equality, diversity and inclusion and Integrity which both reflect our values and culture.
We feel that our board members have a wide range of skills and knowledge and all have lived experience of some or all of the following: Stroke, dementia, head injury, caring, being cared for, mental health issues, anxiety, psychological and cognitive problems, mobility and communication disorders.
This ensures that they have a unique perspective on being a user of the charity’s services and have a genuine empathy and drive to deliver a fully inclusive organisation that is both responsive and person centred delivering only the highest standards of support.
The Objects of Derbyshire Stroke Centre are:

The relief of sickness and the preservation of health among people living with the effects of a stroke or neurological health condition (survivors and carers)

To assist in the treatment and care of persons suffering from mental or physical illness as a result of a stroke or neurological health condition or in need of rehabilitation as a result of such illness, by the provision of facilities for rehabilitation and recreation.

To promote and protect the physical and mental health of families affected by stroke or neurological health conditions through the provision of support, education and practical advice

To advance the education of the general public in all areas relating stroke and neurological health conditions

To preserve and protect the health of people affected by stroke or neurological conditions by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities, support services and equipment not normally provided by the statutory authorities.
Trustees
All trustees give their time voluntarily and receive no remuneration or other benefits Trustees are appointed by invitation.
There are currently 5 trustees, all of whom are stroke survivors. Trustees meet on a bi-monthly basis to discuss staffing, fundraising, service delivery, budgets and general Charity business
Trustees Report 2021
2021 has been a year of growth and change for us as an organisation with us receiving a significant rise in the number of requests for help from families caring for a person with dementia. We have seen a rise in younger people with Frontal Temporal Dementia and support approx. 10 people who live with this terrible condition. It has become very apparent that there is little or no support locally for people who experience dementia alongside other complex health conditions such as stroke, head injury or existing mental health conditions, this means that if we are not able to provide support we know that families will be struggling and often become isolated.
Activities
Music as always has played a very significant part in our daily activities. We were fortunate to receive a grant from Music for Dementia for £42,000 to allow us to employ a Neuro Music Therapist and develop our musical activities.
Our therapist works both 1-1 providing support to a number of people who are struggling psychologically as well those needing support with movement or communication skills.
In addition she works with small groups of people to encourage relationship building, friendships and promoting relaxation and run breaking down barriers for people who feel isolated or anxious. We have been able to purchase some amazing musical instruments mixing traditional percussion with up to date mini hand held synthesisers to ensure music making is relevant for people of all ages.
We were delighted to receive a donation of £500 from Arnold Clark who have been very supportive of our activities and of us as an organisation. They have made donations to us on more than one occasion and we were voted to be their charity of the year in 2020
We continued to use ‘themed weeks’ as a way of engaging all of our service users. Throughout 2021 we chose a wide range of different themes to ensure that everyone who attended was able to take part and enjoy the music and entertainment. These included County and Western, Rock and Roll and Musicals. Our Trustees have always embraced these weeks and absolutely done us proud as an organisation with the amount of effort they put into getting dressed up helping other users to enjoy the week.
Animals continue to play a very important part in our Centre. As well as our three Stroke Centre dogs, Finley, Ruby and George we ensure we have a wide range of visiting animals and birds. This is so important as many people have kept animals in their younger years but due to health problems are no longer able to, many find having animals around both calming and relaxing. Throughout 2021 we had visiting ponies, llamas, owls and birds of prey and a wide variety of creatures from a local mini zoo including a skunk, snakes, spiders etc.
Other Activities:
We were pleased to be able to hold a Charity Ball, an event that we had to cancel in 2020 due to covid. For many people social activities stopped when their health changed due to anxiety about going out and being faced with circumstances where they struggled or felt embarrassed. Our balls give people the opportunity to dress up and go out with their friends in an environment where they feel safe knowing that help is on hand if needed. We returned to the Casa hotel and had a wonderful evening.
We continued to party throughout 2021!. As an organisation we feel it is so important to our service users mental health to provide an atmosphere of fun, relaxation and laughter. We have many people who are extremely isolated and have no friends or family of their own to share good times and celebrations. We are keen to ensure that people at the Centre become ‘family’ to support in good times and when things are difficult.
Transport
The need for transport has grown with more and more people relying on our buses to pick them up. For some people having a long period of time not using public transport through covid has resulted in them either losing the skills to use public buses now or the confidence to do so. In addition the rise in number of people with dementia coming to the Centre means that if we did not provide transport they would not be able to access our support in any other way.
In 2021 we had our first ever price increase for trasport rasisng the cost of a journey by 50p each way to try to help with the cost of increasing fuel.
