Welcome to MKIAC

Milton Keynes Islamic Arts & Culture projects energise diversity in arts and heritage.

Our mission is to create opportunities, stimulate participant, community engage and provide a focal point for the development and celebration of diversity through arts, culture and heritage activity.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE, MANAGEMENT AND FINANCE

The MKIAC is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), It is governed by its constitution dated July 2019, with an amendment February 2020.

A full list of the trustees is provided above. The maximum number of trustees is 7 and the minimum 3.

Trustees are recruited through an open call, MKIAC contacts and membership; their appointment is confirmed at the Annual General Meeting.

Trustees met four times in a year for 2022/23: 28 September 2022, 23 Nov 2022; 22 Feb 2023; and for AGM on August 2023.

Staff

Our thanks go to Adele Newman, freelance Programme Manager for MKIAC arts & culture and her long commitment to the development of MKIAC online Art in Isolation cultural partnership. We are still in process of securing a full time Programme manager and seeking funding to support on-going opportunities and operational capacity.

22/23 grant income to support MKIAC and its development. We are Culture ERS recovery and City of Code & Light Festival. As is common in small organisations, long term sustainability is always an issue. The high level of projects in progression give us the time needed to work on securing further funding for our work streams during 2023 and to be able to retain our Programme manager for the year

The trustees continue to monitor the reserves policy.

Risk

The Board of Trustees review the areas of risk that may affect the organisation and its programmes and projects, and this is integral to our business planning.

The Objectives of MKIAC are:

To promote inclusively Islamic arts, heritage and culture for the benefit of the public in Milton Keynes, in particular, but not exclusively, by supporting and representing the arts and heritage sector through promotion, representation and development and by working in partnership with other like-minded organisations to achieve joint goals that further the charitable purposes .

MKIAC champions the rich Islamic Arts heritage and culture creative future of Milton Keynes. MKIAC is also the lead on Inclusive and diversity with programme developing and this is reflected at out Art in the Park Festival, with its vision to work together to nourish and support the creative skills and cultural wellbeing of Milton Keynes children and young people. This is part of a national movement of Cultural Education Partnerships to deliver creative thinking and experience at the heart of education.

The Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit is at the forefront of our work (section 17 of the Charity Act 2011). The trustees comply with their duty to have due regard to the charity commission’s public benefit guidance when exercising powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant.

MKIAC is a member of SEMLEP Creative and Cultures Industries Group Meeting where cultural colleagues in the region share issues, achievements and challenges, in support of culture at the heart of placemaking and growth, and its impact on the economy and quality of life of this key strategic area.

MKIAC advocates for Cultural Education and the wellbeing of children and young people through MAKE, the MK Cultural Education Partnership (MKCEP) . MAKE champions the impact of creativity and creative thinking across the curriculum on children and young people’s skills, employability and wellbeing. This is a partnership of arts organisation, schools, MK College and local stakeholders, set up in response to the Arts Council England Cultural Education Challenge. Artswork, based in Southampton, is the ACE bridge organisation to support the development of local CEPs in the South East region (currently 13). Our continued thanks to Jezz Bennet, who gives generously of his time as independent chair of MAKE.

The education programmes

We involve local schools and the local higher education college in a range of expressive arts with professionals in residence. Our residences aim to develop students, young people confidence and expression across the range of arts from art with paints, music, textiles, creative writing and installations.

Where possible the programme is linked to the educational syllabus and special events are also provided for young people with learning difficulties to encourage their freedom of expression and to enhance their communication skills through the creative arts.

Our volunteers

MKIAC is very involved in the community and relies on voluntary support.MK College supports and encourages young people to volunteer with MKIAC for learning new skills, build confidence, understanding diverse culture and skills.

MKIAC also have ambassadors who plays important supporting role with advocacy work and communicating with various communities of its programmes and build initiatives that encourage new friendships between women and young people inclusively.

Online MKIAC MK Newsletter

MKIAC -MK sends out a monthly online newsletter, inviting members to share news of developments, successes, challenges, opportunities for professional development and good practice with their colleagues and key interested parties.

Looking forward to 2023 /24

Through our core programme and work with wide range of diverse artists, communities and organisations, we have demonstrated a high level of reach and engagement, supporting the production of high - quality work which resonate with relevant issues and social challenges.

Our work has had tangible benefits and impacts both at a strategic level, in terms of supporting AH-A, SEMLEP, MK Music Hub and Local Authorities to engage with diverse communities, and grassroots level through place -based projects and interventions. Were perfectly positioned to make a strong contribution to Let’s Create strategic vision and becoming ACE NPO.

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2023

I Report on the accounts for the year ended 31 August 2023.

As the charity's trustees you are resposible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the charities Act 2011 ('the Act').

I have examined your charity's accounts as required under section 145 of the charities Act 2011 ('the Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145 (5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

My role is to state whether any material matters have come to my attention giving me cause to belive:

  1. that accounting records were not kept as required by section 130 of the Act; or

  2. that the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. that the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of the Act; or

  4. that there is further information needed for a proper understanding of the accounts.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination and have no concerns in respect of the matters (1) to (4) listed above and,in connection with following the Directions of the Charity Commission I have found no matters that require drawing to your attention.
