**From 1 April 2020 Period start date To 31 March 2021 Period end date Charity name: Barnet Medieval Festival Committee**

**Charity registration number: 1183477**

## **Objectives and Activities**

||SORP reference||
|---|---|---|
|Summary of the purposes
of the charity as set out in
its governing document|Para 1.17|**For the public benefit, to advance the**
**education of the public in the history of**
**medieval life and warfare, with a focus on the**
**history of the town of Barnet, through the**
**provision of a re-enactment of the Battle of**
**Barnet 1471, and other educational activities**
**as the trustees see fit.**|
|Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.|Para 1.17 and
1.19|**This year, forming part of the Covid-19**
**pandemic period, was unusual in that it quickly**
**became clear that our focal event – the**
**Medieval Festival – could not take place as**
**planned in June 2020 due to government**
**restrictions on large gatherings. Regular**
**communication about the Festival were**
**maintained via our social media channels**
**which elicited public support for the event to**
**return once restrictions were lifted.**
**Trustees devoted themselves to maintaining**
**public awareness of the battle and in particular**
**through developing plans to commemorate its**
**550th anniversary in April 2021. These plans**
**included a walk along the route taken by**
**Edward IV as he marched with his troops from**
**Smithfield to Barnet on the eve of battle. The**
**continued restrictions meant that both this**
**walk and a memorial service to mark the**
**anniversary on 14th April 2021 would have to**
**be restricted to a handful of invited guests**
**only. Social media channels were used instead**
**to share these anniversary events with the**
**public:**
**(https://www.facebook.com/1471barnet/ and**
**https://barnetmedievalfestival.org/.**
**Trustees also developed a range of**
**memorabilia, focussing on commemorative**
**mugs in two designs and also t-shirts and**|

|||**hoodies printed with the dates of the battles**
**comprising the Wars of the Roses. These have**
**proved to be of great interest to the**
**community, generating interest in the battle**
**and its wider historical context. When we ran**
**stalls at a series of markets, once lockdown**
**regulations eased, it also provided a good**
**opportunity to further raise awareness of the**
**historicposition held by our town.**|
|---|---|---|
|Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit|Para 1.18|**The Trustees confirm that they have had**
**regard to the guidance on public benefit, while**
**drawing up their initial application, and**
**subsequently.**|

|Policy on grant making|Para 1.38|**N/A**|
|Policy on social investment
including program related
investment|Para 1.38|**N/A**|
|Contribution made by
volunteers|Para 1.38|**Trustees rely on their volunteer force to ‘man’**
**the festival itself. With this being unable to**
**operate this year, we welcomed the**
**occasional assistance of a few of the regular**
**volunteers as assistants on our market stalls**|

## **Achievements and Performance**

|---|---|---|---|
|Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.|Para 1.20|**Inevitably, this year was never one in which**
**we would record much identifiable**
**achievement against our core objective.**
**However, what we did achieve was a**
**retention of the awareness of the existence of**
**the festival and that part of our town’s**
**history.**
**We were grateful to other organisations in the**
**town, notably the Barnet Museum, for**
**planning their own significant contributions in**
**marking the 550th anniversary of the battle. In**
**particular, we acknowledge the Museum’s**
**determination to mount their display of the**
**recreated banners displaying the coats of**
**arms of the noble houses involved in the**
**battle on the lampposts down our High Street.**|**Formatted:**Superscript|
|**Additional information (optional)**
You may choose to include further statements||||
|Achievements against
objectives set|Para 1.41|**In this year, where no Festival would be**
**allowed under government restrictions, our**
**objectives centred on maintaining and**
**expanding community awareness of the Battle**
**of Barnet and its Festival, and devising**
**alternative means of raising funds**||
|Performance of fundraising
activities against objectives
set|Para 1.41|**Trustees decided to combine the two**
**objectives by sourcing, buying and selling**
**items of merchandise. Initially these included:**
**t-shirts and hoodies with the names and dates**
**of the key battles in the Wars of the Roses on**
**the backs of the items, and commemorative**
**china mugs illustrated with key figures from**
**both Lancastrian and Yorkist factions. In this**
**initial period (the months covered were**
**largely concerned with sourcing, design and**
**purchase) where sales did not begin until**
**September, the end of year figures showed a**
**slight loss of £59. However, next year’s figures**
**will show a profit well in excess of £2000 –**
**and will also show this new trading activity as**
**a separately accounted income stream.**||

## **Financial Review**

|**Financial Review**|||
|---|---|---|
|Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of theperiod|Para 1.21|**Thanks to the profit made at the end of the**
**2019 Festival, the accounts show a small profit**
**of £1108**|
|Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held|Para 1.22|**In these early years of the charity, there are**
**very few outgoings or issues requiring ongoing**
**maintenance. Apart from the paper loss**
**mentioned above, all monies were held as a**
**preparation towards funding the next Festival.**|
|Amount of reserves held|Para 1.22|**As above**|
|Reasons for holding zero
reserves|Para 1.22|**N/A**|
|Details of fund materially in
deficit|Para 1.24||
|Explanation of any
uncertainties about the
charity continuing as a going
concern|Para 1.23|**While we are so dependent upon**
**philanthropic donations, the survival of the**
**charity must be a concern. However, we**
**believe we are demonstrating the importance**
**of the festival to the community and are**
**working to secure our financial base**|

**Additional information (optional)** You may choose to include further statements where relevant about:

|The charity’s principal
sources of funds (including
any fundraising)|Para 1.47|**Currently the charity depends upon a few**
**local philanthropic organisations, plus the**
**occasional support of the Borough.**
**Increasingly the sale of relevant merchandise**
**will support this. We are also continuing to**
**review the pricing policy for entry to the**
**Festival – aiming to combine accessibility with**
**the realisation of enough funds to cover the**
**annual costs.**|
|---|---|---|
|Investment policy and
objectives including any
social investment policy
adopted|Para 1.46|**The Trustees currently have no financial**
**investment policy in place, nor any plans to do**
**so.**|
|A description of the principal
risks facing the charity|Para 1.46|**We believe that we have, this year, just faced**
**one of the major risks to the charity – that of**
**being unable to mount a large public event.**
**The risks are less financial in the short term,**
**as nearly all outgoings and income are related**
**to the Festival. Provided the decision not to**
**run is taken early enough (ie before any**
**significant expenditure has taken place) then**
**the risk is low. However, the Trustees did**
**write to our local MP to enquire whether, in**
**these highly unusual times, the government**
**would consider acting as an underwriter, in**
**the event of a new increase in covid infections**
**suddenly putting a halt to all mass gatherings.**
**The answer to this was in the negative, which**
**made discussions about whether or not to aim**|
