JARJEER MULE AND DONKEY TRUST

ANNUAL REPORT 2022-2023

The Trust is committed to relieve the suffering and neglect of working equines in Morocco.

Donations have been received and grants made to the Jarjeer Mule and Donkey Refuge in Morocco which remains the only facility in the Kingdom providing long term sanctuary to sick and maltreated equines. The Refuge now has 260 equines in their care which in turn is supported by the Trust.

We are satisfied that our achievements this year are continuing to make a substantial difference to the lives of working animals in Morocco. We continue to support animals who are disabled, Injured, starving or abandoned.

Last year the Refuge, which is registered as an Association in Morocco, entered into a convention with the local authority in Marrakech so that they would act as the long-term facility for animals that were confiscated. Sadly, that convention was breached. The Refuge was being sent so many each day without medical checks. They had been kept at the abattoir which in turn was introducing bacteria and viruses to the existing population. The staff continued to go to the local slaughterhouse and bring back as many as they possibly could and also to take food to those who facing slaughter.

We have assisted in saving several carriage horses from Marrakech and they are being rehabilitated at the Jarjeer Refuge. The staff at the Refuge continue to have a very good relationship with many of the owners of the carriage horses in Marrakech. The reality is that many young people who visit the Refuge and assist with day-to-day tasks are changing their attitudes in terms of animal welfare. Both the Trust and the Refuge have developed an international reputation based on the high standard of care that the Refuge in Morocco provides.

We have been able to assist in improving the clinic facilities at the Refuge and they are in the process of building an operating theatre so the vet can provide the best service to those who need surgery.
