activities were to raise funds on behalf of and
make grants to support the Greig City Academy
(GCA) Sailing Programme. We also continued
discussions with major sailing bodies about
enhancing diversity in the sport.
Fundraising
We are extremely grateful to all the donors and
volunteers who have supported our work.
GCA’s extraordinary sailing programme would
not be possible without them. 2024 marked the
10 Year Anniversary of the Sailing Programme.
A report entitled _Waves of Change_ was
published in July 2024, charting the 10 Year
history of the sailing programme.
Grants made:
Grants totalling £212,000 were made to the
GCA Sailing Programme during the year. Some
additional funding was provided by other donors
directly to GCA to contribute to the costs of the
sailing programme.
Together with this wider support, our grants,
enabled the GCA Sailing Programme to
continue to provide exceptional opportunities to
state school students from inner city London to
develop confidence and skills through sailing.
The GCA Sailing Programme is the leading
state school sailing programme in the UK. The
comprehensive programme of activities and
support offered to the students includes regular
dinghy sessions, regular racing on school and
privately owned boats as well as residential sail
training voyages on ocean going yachts.
No other school is entering multiple boats to
compete and win prizes at Cowes Week
including the Young Skipper Trophy and the
Youth Trophy, while also entering students in
elite sailing events such as the Etchells
Nationals and the ILCA (Laser) Nationals and
Cowes Classics Week. The Etchells crew won
the prestigious Sir Kenneth Preston Cup.
Students have also attended fully funded ILCA
Skills Week at the Weymouth & Portland
National Sailing Academy.
Scaramouche participated in the ASTO
Guernsey to Poole Small Ships Race 2024,
inspired by the RNLI’s 200thAnniversary in| August. GCA students also participated on board the Rona Sailing Project’s vessel Donald Searle. All crew met the ASTO Patron HRH, The Duchess of Edinburgh. One student took up an elite and unique opportunity as an intern with Emirates GB Sail GP. He was offered this as his standout talent was recognised by key member of the team. The Greig City Academy also met Sir Ben Ainsley and Hannah Mills when the squad for the Youth and Puig Women’s America’s Cup was announced. Sailing is developing at pace at the GCA with students taking up further RYA training and work placements. We believe the GCA Sailing Programme is one of the leading initiatives in promoting diversity and accessibility for young people of colour in sailing. This is evidenced in the media attention that the programme gains and the interest in the programme from policy makers and other grassroots organizations. For more details of the activities we have supported during the year, please see the News page on our website: https://scaramouchesailing.org.uk/news/ Other activities The Scaramouche Sailing Trust supported GCA’s work to help other schools get more involved in sailing. We have also continued discussions with the RYA and other sailing bodies about how the lessons from GCA’s experience can be applied more widely to enhance diversity in sailing. _A Lessons Learned_ document was published in conjunction with _Waves of Change_ . It is a contribution to wider work to develop practical approaches to address structural inequalities in the sport. We look forward to continuing all our work in the year ahead. ## **Financial Review** |Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end

charitable income from sponsors, corporate
partners, trusts, foundations as well as regular
and major individual donors.
A total of £87,501 was donated from generous
major individual donors.| |---|---|---| Total income from trusts and foundation was £70,282. Grants were gratefully received from The Betty Lawes Foundation, The Trinity House Maritime Charity, The Whirlwind Charitable Trust, The Royal Southern Yacht Club Trust, The Royal Thames Yacht Club Charity, The Ocean Cruising Club Charity, The French Huguenot Church Charity, The Dalgleish Trust and the Matheson Todd Foundation. Additionally, donations were made from charitable trusts and donations who wish to remain anonymous. Corporate donations and contributions totalled £57,262 from a range of supporters including, Aspen Insurance, RWD Limited, Spring Capital, the Royal Yacht Squadron and from the proceeds of the Russell-Cooke Silicon Cup regatta. Individual and regular givers donated a total of £21,173 most of which came through the Just Giving platform. We were honoured that Gemma Mears and Dom Hattee ran funding events in memory of Jamie Mears, raising more than £11,000 for the charity. With our cooperation, Cobnor Activities Centre, the Rona Sailing Project and Ocean Youth Trust South secured funding of £6,600 on our behalf so that the GCA students could access residential dinghy activities. We are extremely grateful for all the confidence shown in our and GCA’s exceptional work, from every donor and sponsor mentioned above and those who wish to remain anonymous. Our total expenditure for the year was £261,580. The major part of this was grants of £212,000 made to the Greig City Academy Sailing Programme for their expenses during the year. Our other expenses were £49,580. The majority of this related to staff costs. Other costs included modest expenditure on fundraising, events, governance, equipment, and professional services. At the end of the year, the charity held reserves of £28,987. The accompanying “receipts & payments accounts” present our income and expenditure over the year on a cash basis, excluding accruals. The figures above are presented on an accruals basis, to give a more complete picture of our financial position during the year. |||The major accrual was a final grant payment of
£94,000 approved to pay to GCA Sailing
Programme. A small number of donations to the
charity for work within this year were received
just after our year end.
During the course of the year, an adjustment
was made to the prior year’s closing cash funds
of £5,587, in order to account for accruals made
