|---|---|---|---|
| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | During the year ended 31stAug 2023, our major activities were to raise funds on behalf of and make grants to support the Greig City Academy (GCA) Sailing Programme. We also continued discussions with major sailing bodies about enhancing diversity in the sport. Fundraising We are extremely grateful to all the donors and volunteers who have supported our work. GCA’s extraordinary sailing programme would not be possible without them. Grants made: Grants totalling £80,000 were made to the GCA Sailing Programme during the year, and a further £100,000 committed by year end. Additional grants, primarily from trusts and foundations were made directly to GCA to contribute to the costs of the sailing programme. The GCA Sailing Programme is the leading state school sailing programme of its kind in the UK. No other school is entering multiple boats to compete and win prizes at Cowes Week including the Young Skipper Trophy and the Youth Trophy, while also entering students in elite sailing events such as the Etchells Worlds and the ILCA (Laser) Nationals. Together with this wider support, our grants, enabled the GCA Sailing Programme to continue to provide exceptional opportunities to state school students from inner city London to develop confidence and skills through sailing. The comprehensive programme of activities and support is offered to the students includes regular dinghy sessions, regular racing on school and privately owned boats as well as residential sail training voyages on ocean going yachts. Some of the dedicated students also gained experience competing at international level, and support to gain professional qualifications to progress within the industry. We believe the GCA Sailing Programme is one of the leading initiatives in promoting diversity and accessibility for young people of colour in sailing. This is evidenced in the positive media attention that the sailing programme gains, which included feature articles in the Times and the Daily Mail in 2023. |
For more details of the activities we have supported during the year, please see the News page on our website: https://scaramouchesailing.org.uk/news/ Other activities The Scaramouche Sailing Trust supported GCA’s work to signpost other schools, to help them get more involved in sailing. We have also continued discussions with the RYA and other sailing bodies about how the lessons from GCA’s experience can be applied more widely to enhance diversity in sailing. We look forward to continuing all our work in the year ahead.

Individual and regular givers donated a total of £50,820 most of which came through the Just Giving Platform. We received £18,200 in sponsorship from M7 Real Estate and Red SP. We are extremely grateful for all the confidence shown in our and GCA’s exceptional work, from each and every donor and sponsor mentioned above. The charity approved grants of £180,000 to the Greig City Academy Sailing Programme for their expenses during the year. Of these, £80,000 were paid during the year and a further £100,000 was committed to be paid immediately after the end of the year, when the GCA Sailing Programme’s accounts were finalised. |
|---|---|---|
| At £5,577, the cost of running the charity remain incredibly modest and covered fundraising, events, governance, equipment, and professional services. At the end of the year and after year-end adjustments, the charity held reserves of £49,327. While no staff costs were incurred in the year under review, a newly created part-time Development Manager the charity’s first staff member was appointed on August 28th, 2023.
