## **Trustees Report 2024-25**

As I come to the end of my year as President, I can honestly say it has been both busy and immensely rewarding. I hope I have fulfilled the role with energy, integrity, and commitment. It has been a true honour to serve the Kenilworth Lions Club as your President in 2024-25.

We are an extraordinary club - and as the Lions motto reminds us, “We Serve.” Serve we certainly have! From our regular Saturday mornings at the Furniture Store to our key events throughout the year, our collective efforts have made a real difference both locally and internationally.

At my first Lions Convention in April, I was reminded how unique our club is. Our Furniture Store provides a fundraising model that truly works - one many other clubs would envy. The funds we raise allow us to support local causes and contribute to global initiatives through LCIF.

In 2024–25, we donated £84,368 to our local community, an additional £5,200 in vouchers for refugees and families in urgent need, and just under £14,000 to international causes - an incredible £103,546.17 raised in one year!

## **International**

One of my proudest moments was seeing our club - together with the Kenilworth community - purchase and stock an ambulance for Ukraine, which two of our own Lions then delivered personally. Over the past two years, four ambulances have reached Ukraine thanks to the dedication and courage of Lions Ivan, Dave, and Bill.

We also supported the Friends of Malawi Children’s Centre; our £1,000 donation helped provide specially made wooden corner chairs and bespoke wheelchairs for disabled children. Through LCIF, we have contributed to projects such as supplying stoves to the people of Ukraine and assisting those affected by disasters in Myanmar and Nepal.

## **Our Community**

Supporting our local community remains at the heart of everything we do. This year we have continued to fund initiatives with tackling local needs, including:

- ➢ **The Kenilworth Centre** : Supporting youth groups, dementia cafés, and essential maintenance such as roof repairs.

   - I also attended a session at the Kenilworth Centre to improve my knowledge and understanding of the provision and needs of the LGTBQA+ in our community.

- ➢ **The Little Ray of Sunshine Café** : For those living with dementia. It was a pleasure and a privilege to spend some time supporting this group.

- ➢ **Food Banks** : As economic times make it hard for many in our community Kenilworth Lions are proud to support our Local Food banks and help them to feed those in need. We also get hands on helping with some of their events organised for those in need.

- ➢ **Families in need** : Each Christmas we give gift vouchers to around 100 families and people in need in our community. We hope to give their Christmas a little more sparkle.

- ➢ **Funding two local hospices** : Myton and Shakespeare, helping them continue their vital outreach work in Kenilworth.

- ➢ **Priory Pantomime** : Also at Christmas it’s enriching to have a Lions night at the Panto. All seats are offered free to the elderly and needy in our community to again bring a little more of the Christmas spirit. This year was no different as laughter filled the auditorium.

Lions Clubs International Multiple District 105CW Registered Charity Number: 1183358

- ➢ **The Talisman Theatre** : Supporting their relaxed pantomime performances for those with neurodiverse or special needs audiences.

- ➢ **Our local schools** : We donated £2,000 to each of our seven primary schools to support swimming lessons while Abbey Fields pool is rebuilt - ensuring every child can learn this lifesaving skill.

## **President’s Charity**

I am deeply grateful for the enthusiastic support shown for my President’s Charity fundraising. Our Charity Ball in November was both a social and financial success, raising over £4,500 - contributing to an outstanding total of £16,007 for the Special Care Baby Unit at Warwick Hospital.

The funds will be used to purchase a Baby SIM doll - a specialist piece of equipment that helps neonatal doctors and nurses refine their life-saving skills in newborn resuscitation and care. The team at the hospital were overwhelmed by the generosity of the Kenilworth Lions and send their heartfelt thanks.

## **Vision Support**

In line with a key Lions International pillar, we continued collecting spectacles - around 8,000 pairs - to be recycled and redistributed worldwide, giving the gift of improved sight to others.

## **Annual Events**

**Carols at the Castle** : A magical evening with Mayor Alan Chalmers and MP Sir Jeremy Wright, celebrating community spirit through song. Seeing families and children take part in such a cherished tradition was a joy. This year I actually got to hear the Carols and sing along (I am usually helping with the catering). It was great to be on stage and Thank the community for attending. It’s great to see children singing in the Choir and coming with their family to join in this tradition at our beautiful Kenilworth Castle (How lucky are we to have this in our Town)

**Duck Race** : My final outing as Queen Duck was unforgettable - tipping in the ducks with Sir Jeremy Wright was quite the splash! The Duck Race is still an Institution in Kenilworth, and I am so thankful to those members and their families who turn up to sell tickets in the weeks before and on a cold Boxing Day at 8am to make this event happen. The Corporate Duck event I started with the Committee a few years ago is growing year on year. The businesses love taking part and the sight of the larger decoy ducks all dressed for the race is a real spectacle. We are selling more tickets each year which raises more money for our causes.

**Grand Show** : This year I had the pleasure of fully experiencing the Show for the first time! Accompanied by our new Mayor James Kennedy, and his Mayoress Kit, I met many wonderful local charities and enjoyed the talented children’s performances. Evening came along with our sound stage coming into its own with great local singers and bands. The community turned out with their picnics or sampled the food and drinks available from the bar and food trucks. The weather gods were kind to us and it was another great Kenilworth Lions event. Again, our members, families and Friends of Lions make us proud to serve our community. (The Grand Show is held to support other Charites in our town to raise some funds, whilst we make a small loss.) It was a true celebration of community spirit and teamwork.

## **In Closing**

Being President of this amazing club has been an honour and a joy. My heartfelt thanks go to every Lion, partner, friend, and supporter who has given their time, energy, and good humour to make this year so successful.

As I hand over to Lion Bill, I do so with complete confidence. Bill is a dedicated, thoughtful, and capable leader, and I know the club will thrive under his guidance.

Thank you all for your service, your friendship, and for making this a year I will always cherish. Together, we have proved once again that Lions really do make a difference.

Yours in Service

Lion Sue Meads – President 2024-25

I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 30 June 2025

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is required.

It is my responsibility to:

- Examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements.

- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act, and

- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act.
