Trustees Report 2023-24
The Lions’ motto is “we serve” and I am proud to have served as President again for the 2023 – 2024 Lions Year. At a time of change it can be an opportunity for reflection so let's run through some of the good work that the club have all been doing in these difficult times. This year we have supported those in need both locally and abroad. What has been nice is that during the year we have organised far reaching support not only with Lions’ International Emergency Relief Fund, to which we gave £10K, but also assisting with the relief efforts in Ukraine by putting £6K towards the purchase and outfitting of an ambulance with the help of the Polish Club in Leamington.
Now looking closer to home; the cost-of-living crisis has resulted in us providing support to those what we previously have not. For instance, we gave £14K to seven schools to enable the children to learn the valuable life skill of being able to swim. Just think that with this grant we may have prevented more than one death. On a lighter note, this means that they will also be able to safely enjoy time in, on, and around water. I say this as I know how much being able to swim has improved my life.
This was not the only way in which we potentially helped save lives this year, we also gave close to £10K to Warwickshire Search and Rescue which will undoubtedly help find those most vulnerable who become lost or disoriented in our community. As many of you know it is quite shocking how many call outs they get in a year. If our money helps find one person, I know we will all think it money well spent.
Another way in which we have improved the lives of many in our local community is the ongoing support that we have given to the Kenilworth Centre. This year we have given them £6K to help with their running costs. Without our support they would be struggling to provide the wide variety of amenities and activities that I have been reliably informed by many users that the centre provides in the community.
We have also helped many other local organisations, such as the Scout groups, the day care centre, and equipment for children with complex difficulties. And let's not forget the many furniture store vouchers that we have given to those in our community, so that they may have a modicum of comfort in their own homes.
Not all of our good work in our community is in the form of writing cheques. This is something that many of you know I am passionate about, as not all problems can be solved simply with money. We are currently working with the local branch of Refuge UK, helping them complete their housing projects. This means that when people need to use the facility it is a little more comfortable and homely.
We have continued our partnership with the Rugby club to hold a number of PSA test evenings, and once again we are giving many in our community peace of mind.
Lions Clubs International Multiple District 105CW Registered Charity Number: 1183358
Now I don’t know if we have all kept sight on the glasses collection, if we had we could have seen how much of an ongoing success it has been, with well over 7,500 pairs delivered to HQ for processing. This will give the gift of clear vision to many. This is something personally I know can make such an improvement to everyday life.
Not all our activities bring a direct measurable benefit to our community, but they do have a significant impact on bringing people together. The Lions’ Christmas Carol concert and the Grand Show are staples in the Kenilworth community calendar, and far from being money spinners for the club, these are subsidised by us as a service to the local community, and a thank-you for their support and donations. A slightly less publicised event that brings enjoyment to those who need it most is the panto. This year we gave the gift of laughter to 115 people, young and old alike. In these difficult times the events we put on enable people from all walks of life to experience a fun and enjoyable time, bringing our community closer together.
Despite the challenges around us all jointly running a business, the furniture store has gone from strength to strength, providing the club many thousands of pounds, with which we can support worthy causes as well as preventing many tons of waste going to landfill. The store is a cornerstone of our fundraising, as it opens almost every Saturday of the year, and the continued effort that it requires has not gone unappreciated by us all.
Now I am sure you can all agree that nothing feels quite as festive as … watching 1500 plastic ducks bob down a freezing cold river on Boxing Day. In saying that, this year the weather gods smiled on us, ensuring just enough water in the river, and none of it falling on us. It turns out many of our community agree that it’s a festive favourite, as we sold all 9,000 tickets this year. I hope we can sell even more than this next year. This event is one of our highest profile fundraising activities, drawing in young and old alike.
Believe it or not the club now has 58 members. This is almost unbelievable to me as when I started all those years ago, we had around half that number. While other groups have struggled, Kenilworth Lions Club, with its open and friendly atmosphere, has continued to gather more willing, helpful hands to join in and make a difference.
Now to lighter matters, not everything in the Lions is completely selfless, there is also the social side that brings us all together. Despite all the good work that the club does still find the time to have fun. I think one thing that makes Kenilworth Lions special is the balance that we have between raising money and helping the community and ensuring that there is the opportunity for all of us to get together and socialise. The many trips organised this year have given us a shared experience that we will remember for years to come. How many people can say they have been around the Mini factory?
This year has been overwhelmingly positive, the actions of club members have shown great creativity and dedication to the community. I hope that I hand over the reins of President to Sue with the club at least mostly intact, and in a position to continue doing all the good work.
I have been privileged to be the President of Kenilworth Lions, and I wish you all the best in our continued efforts to make this a better place for us all.
