Trustees Annual Report for 2022 – 2023

For the 12 months from July 2022 to June 2023 I have had the honour of representing Kenilworth Lions Club as President. Now that it is over, I have to write this report on behalf of the Trustees.

Here is a short summary of what happened during the year.

The year got off to a good start with a very sociable Changeover Dinner at Kenilworth Golf Club. Due to the lack of events during the Pandemic this evening incorporated a “catch up” which saw the chain of office passed from 2019-20 Ex-President Graham Pemberton to Immediate Past President Steve Luff (2020-21) then on to President Rob Sullivan (2021-22). Rob didn’t get to keep it long though, as he had to present it to me after speeches by the Kenilworth Mayor, Sam Cooke, and local MP Sir Jeremy Wright! As well as the compulsory raffle, we also had entertainment from the talented pianist and raconteur Noel Lincoln.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Throughout the year, We Served guided by the Community Service Committee ably chaired by Lion Bill Wanley . As well as overseeing record a number of Pride of Lions Grants during the year, we supported PhAB Club, Stroke Club, 3 PSA and Health Awareness sessions and a Panto evening at Priory Theatre – where I got dragged onto stage and splattered by a shaving foam custard pie!

As usual, the fundraising Powerhouse of Club was our Charity Used Furniture Store , run by a separate entity, Kenilworth Lions Ltd – a subdivision of our Club. Ably chaired by Lion Roger Tyler, the store is what makes the Club the success it is today, thanks to regular weekly efforts of many Lions and their partners. Roles include running the store, selling furniture, staffing the bazaar and donations tables, arranging and making collections, delivering furniture, etc.

This year thanks to this hard work, and the generosity and support of the local population, we were able to raise and distribute over £100,000 to local and national causes and charities. For example:

We also continue to provide regular financial support to local organisations, e.g. Waverley Day Centre, the Kenilworth Centre, and Compassionate Kenilworth and offer direct assistance e.g. providing marshals for the Round Table Fireworks, and elves for their Santa Sleigh.

Our Secretary logged a total of 133 “Service Activities” to Lions Clubs International during the year, with a total of 10,764 hours volunteered, most of this in and around the furniture store, we made over 100 individual Community Service Grants plus other one-off activities such as spectacle and other recycling, organising and running events etc.

ANNUAL EVENTS

Over the year, we organised community events designed to enable local charities and causes to raise money for themselves, and to entertain the public.

Lions Clubs International Multiple District 105CW Registered Charity Number: 1183358

Kenilworth Lions Club CIO

Charities day in September 2022 provided an opportunity for 20 stalls to raise funds and awareness for their charities. The event received lots of positive feedback, and I got to wander round feeling important with the Kenilworth Mayor Sam Cooke.

Carols at the Castle . This was a very successful and enjoyable community event, helped by subsidy from Kenilworth Town Council. On the stage were the St Augustine’s Primary School choir and the Coventry Salvation Army band. Also featured, a non-PC version of ‘God Rest ye Merrie Gentlemen’ by the Stoneleigh Male Voice Choir. A bucket collection raised over £800 for Medics to Medics for Ukraine.

Sadly, there was no Boxing Day Duck Race in 2022, but on Coronation weekend in May 2023, I was chauffeured around Kenilworth with Lion Sue Meads in a vintage Bentley (even if sideways across the back seat) on the alternative Royal Duck Progress , which was a great success. We even received a cheque from the Sunningdale Avenue street party at of our stops. Fun as it was, we are looking forward to getting back to normal with a Duck Race in Finham Brook - Provided safety concerns have been addressed.

Charity Grand Show . Last but not least, the biggest event of our year was the Grand Show in Abbey Fields in June 2023. The fantastic weather facilitated a brilliant day for all involved. With Classic cars (I had a more comfortable ride in a Morgan), to a Spitfire fly-past, and all-day entertainment from local dance troupes and performers, carrying on into the evening with several bands. It had something for everyone (unless you were a dog looking forward to the Dog Show, as it was too hot for our furry friends).

SOCIAL EVENTS

Our Social Committee planned and organised a sociable monthly calendar for the year. As well as perennial events like the croquet evening, theatre trip, and quiz night, this also included a brewery tour, HS2 tunnel visit, gin distillery, ten pin bowling and others. Membership has stayed high at above 50 during this year, with our female members taking an increasing part in Club activities.

ENVIRONMENT and HEALTH AND SAFETY

Liaising with Kenilworth Town Council Climate Emergency group and advising Club on green initiatives and ideas, this newly formed committee developed during the year, developing opportunities for the public to recycle corks, crisp packets and blister packs as well as the glasses collection point at the Furniture Store. All committees now include a “Green” Review when planning events or other activities.

The Club now has a pro-active approach to Health and Safety which, like environmental issues, is considered early in the process of organising every event or activity.

SUMMARY

On a personal note, it has been a privilege to represent the Kenilworth Lions Club this year at Lions events, as well as many local engagements and receptions. However, behind every President is hard-working team. None of this could have happened without the advice and support of the other Trustees, Committee chairs organising events and running other aspects of Club life and the Lion Membership itself.

Also, thank you to all the partners of Lions, who should probably all be made Honorary Members, for their assistance!

To summarise Kenilworth Lions Club continues to be a thriving, large and robust Club that is well recognised in the town for the voluntary community work it delivers and has enjoyed a full and active year.
