TRUSTEES REPORT FOR THE PERIOD 1st April 2023 – 31st March 2024

SECTION 1: PASTOR’S OVERVIEW

The past year has been one of encouragement; challenge and realisation of our limitations. Encouragement as we have seen new faces join with us for worship on a regular basis, especially those from Nigeria and Ghana whose presence makes the church a lot more multicultural, which is a good expression of the nature and scope of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

There has been encouragement too as we have sought to develop a deeper sense of community, but also challenge as we have sought to engage with our community and develop a sense of urgency to do this as a church and the growing awareness of our limitations, especially as those with free time are the older generation within the church.

As Rickstones Church, we seek to be a church community that serves others in the way that Jesus served; giving of our time and resources. This is because we desire to follow the example of Jesus as his followers today. We are so thankful for all the volunteers within the church who serve and without whom we would be unable to do so much of what we do, and without whom we would be unable to be a benefit for our community.

During the past year we completed our church & community audit. This was a really helpful exercise and one which showed us that we needed to focus more on community engagement with relevant practical support as well as in spiritual ways. The upshot of this is that we felt God calling us to seek to appoint a Family support and Outreach Worker, who would help to spearhead new initiatives with a particular focus on one of our local housing estates. As yet, we have not found a suitable candidate, but we continue to seek the Lord for guidance and direction.

We have also been approached by the resident association from Templars Estate about starting an after-school homework club for primary aged children -many of whom do not have a place where they can do their homework or have someone the listen to them read, and then have a cooked meal. We are actively pursuing this and our aim is to try and have something in place for Sept 24, although this seems to be largely dependant on us having the Family Support and outreach Worker in place to help spearhead this and other new initiatives.

This all fits in to our model of wanting to meet people where they are, to get alongside them, and of course, at the same time, we believe that we need to be able to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the DNA of all our ministries because we are not just a community help scheme, but a spiritual body who interacts with others practically, spiritually and compassionately.

We are blessed to have a good leadership team that works well and oversees as trustees of the church and charity. The leadership team engages in things from pastoral care; finances, building maintenance, and administration, through to our children’s ministry leaders who organise and lead Sunday school.

During the year both Martin Jackson and Peter Hales stood down from their roles as Elders. We owe a huge debt of thanks to them for their service. Also Rebekah Massey got married and moved to Canada. She is still functioning as the church secretary, and joins leadership meetings via Zoom, which is great.

I want to thank the church once again for their continued support, and especially as I have had to have time on sick leave once again during the year. Your friendship support and fellowship in the gospel to both Christine and myself is such an encouragement.

SECTION 2: MINISTRY REPORT

Although the Covid lockdown is now in the dim and distant past, the reality is that church has changed significantly because for some, regular attendance at church, or attending midweek events or prayer meetings is not something they prioritise any more.

This is something we are seeking to address because the Bible exhorts us not to give up meeting together and we are aware how much we need to do this in order to be a vibrant Christian community in our own day and age, and not only that, we also need to do it for our own spiritual wellbeing because when we meet for worship and prayer, we support and spur each other on in the Christian life.

The main time when the church gathers is on a Sunday morning as we gather for worship and fellowship. This is a key focus of the church. We have continued to be encouraged and challenged by Pastor Adrian’s ministry along with ministry from Barry Cheesman, Keith Ives and other visiting speakers.

We are blessed to have a good number of families in the church, and we try to engage as many of the different age ranges in the various ministries of the church as we can. It so encouraging to see how some of the children and young people engage in this too, they love to be a part of what is going on, even the bi-monthly prayer breakfast on a Sunday morning. We see the children as part of the church family and we seek to do all we can to encourage them, teach them and pastor them well. We are so grateful for the tech team of young people who do the live stream on a Sunday morning. Of course there are many others who help in all manner of ways in the running of church – and we thank them too.

Over the course of the last year, the sermon series has included ministry from Paul’s letter to the church in Colossae – which helped us to refocus our gaze on the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the all sufficient One, and the head of the church. We also studied some of the Psalms, which are songs for life. We looked at Luke’s letter to his friend Theophilus, the book of Acts. We saw how the early church in NT times had a great zeal for the Lord Jesus and how that zeal manifested itself in the church community and in the church’s engagement with he people of their day.

Pastor Adrian had a six-week sabbatical in September and October, and we were grateful for Keith Ives and Gaius Phillingham who covered those Sundays and brought ministry from the Bible’s letters to the seven churches.

Sunday school stopped following the same teaching plan as main church this year. This is because the teaching in Sunday School is now done only by Steph and Steve. We cannot begin to thank them enough for their commitment, not just to Sunday school, but to youth club too.

Over the past year, we have had special events at church to which we have invited friend and folk from the community. It has been encouraging to see many people who do not normally come to church attending some of these events. The main event of the year was the street party we arranged for the community to celebrate the King’s Coronation in May. This was well attended and people appreciated what we did for Rickstones Road.

During the year we have continued to run the Pantry Project, and we are sure this project will continue to be a much-needed resource in the community. The project is still supplied solely by the generosity of those who come to the church. We know that those who receive the food boxes, either through the local school or by direct referrals, are so grateful.

The Foyer café continues twice a month and is used by people from the church as well as some in the community and we are starting to see some crossover between the Foyer Café and attendance at Sunday worship.

Along with Sunday school, both Breakout and the Baby & Toddler group have continued well, with Baby and Toddler thriving, and being recognised as ‘the best’ in the town. The vast majority of children who come to these weekly events are not from church families but families in the community. It is encouraging to see how relationships are being fostered. There is also a youth club which attracts a small number of children in school yr 7 and above.

The church premises continue to be used mid-week by Rainbows and Brownies and a children’s dance group.

Through all these different elements to the ministry of the church, we seek to live out our faith, being relevant and supporting our community in any way we can.

As of 31st March 2024, we had 27 members, of which 23 are active (see Church Handbook).

CHURCH GOVERNANCE

The church is affiliated to the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches who provide a wide range of resources and helps.

The trustees of the church have continued to meet in accordance with the requirements of the church handbook. The meetings of the trustees are vital to the good governance of the church as a charity, and as such these meetings cover a wide variety of issues, from general governance, to finance and safeguarding, to how we might best engage with our community in meaningful ways, and of course also includes a time of prayer for the life and ministry of the church.

Our trustee meetings are usually in person, although there is provision in the church handbook for us to meet digitally if the need arises.

The trustees have revised and amended all the risk assessments and policies where necessary. These are available on the member’s login area of the church website.

We have continued to be committed to safeguarding procedures and all volunteers and paid employees have had the appropriate DBS checks. We have had 4 safeguarding concerns raised but none have required further reporting in line with our safeguarding policy and in consultation with thirty:one eight. All have been recorded in accordance with our safeguarding policy and data protection policy should further action be required.

All registers from groups have been stored / disposed of appropriately in accordance with our data protection policy.

• Governance documents and procedure: The church is governed by the church constitution and the church handbook. Subject to provisions of clause 13.4 and clause 13.2 of the church constitution, the charity trustees of the church are the persons appointed to the offices set out and in accordance with the church handbook.

FINANCE AND BUILDING

We continue to be extremely grateful to God for the way he provides for us, and grateful to the church for their continued giving. It is a testimony to the reality of our faith that we know God to be giver of every good and perfect gift, and as He has blessed us, so we are able to contribute financially to the ministry of the church.

We continue to rent the manse to the family of one of the church trustees, and the extra income this provides is set aside for extra ministry expenses, such as the Family Support & Outreach Worker, and also for when we sense the time is right to either have a ministry trainee or call another pastor. The trustees redesignated the fund from a ministry training fund to a general ministry fund in order to give us greater freedom for appointing new staff workers. While we do not want to simply hoard funds, our aim is to have good financial reserves in place for those unexpected costs, and also to be able to have at least one year’s salary in place before looking for a second paid worker.

The general maintenance of the church and grounds has continued through the year, and we express our grateful thanks to Warwick Chipperfield, Mervyn Reynolds and John Massey for keeping the premises and grounds in good condition. Remedial work on the buildings has been carried out as and when needed, which included a professional lining for the guttering on the church hall to prevent water ingress.

MISSIONARY SUPPORT

We have continued to support the following missions and missionaries during the year, both with regular giving and through prayer:

In addition, we had special offerings for SASRA (Remembrance Sunday) and Caring For Life (Harvest). 50% of our FIEC affiliation donation is taken from the Missionary Fund in recognition of the fact that FIEC is, at heart, a missionary movement.

This report, including the Annual Accounts, has been compiled by the Trustees to give an overview of the Church's ministry during the year and of the Church's financial position.

Note 2 Accounting policies

2.2 INCOME

This standard list of accounting policies has been applied by the charity except for those ticked "No" or "N/a". Where a different or additional policy has been adopted then this is detailed in the box below.

Recognition of income
Income from interest,
royalties and dividends
This is included in the accounts when receipt is probable and the amount receivable can
be measured reliably.
Income from membership
subscriptions
Membership subscriptions received in the nature of a gift are recognised in Donations
and Legacies.
Membership subscriptions which gives a member the right to buy services or other
benefits are recognised as income earned from the provision of goods and services as
income from charitable activities.
Donated services and facilities that are consumed immediately are recognised as income
with an equivalent amount recognised as an expense under the appropriate heading in
the SOFA.
The cost of any stock of goods donated for distribution to beneficiaries is deemed to be
the fair value of those gifts at the time of their receipt and they are recognised on receipt.
In the reporting period in which the stocks are distributed, they are recognised as an
expense at the carrying amount of the stocks at distribution.
Donated services and
facilities
Donated services and facilities are included in the SOFA when received at the value of
the gift to the charity provided the value of the gift can be measured reliably.
Donated goods are measured at fair value (the amount for which the asset could be
exchanged) unless impractical to do so.
In the case of performance related grants, income must only be recognised to the extent
that the charity has provided the specified goods or services as entitlement to the grant
only occurs when the performance related conditions are met (5.16 FRS 102 SORP).
Legacies
Legacies are included in the SOFA when receipt is probable, that is, when there has
been grant of probate, the executors have established that there are sufficient assets in
the estate and any conditions attached to the legacy are either within the control of the
charity or have been met.
Government grants
The charity has received government grants in the reporting period
Tax reclaims on donations
and gifts
Gift Aid receivable is included in income when there is a valid declaration from the donor.
Any Gift Aid amount recovered on a donation is considered to be part of that gift and is
treated as an addition to the same fund as the initial donation unless the donor or the
terms of the appeal have specified otherwise.
Contractual income and
performance related
grants
Donated goods for resale are measured at fair value on initial recognition, which is the
expected proceeds from sale less the expected costs of sale, and recognised in 'Income
from other trading activities' with the corresponding stock recognised in the balance
sheet. On its sale the value of stock is charged against 'Income from other trading
activities' and the proceeds from sale are also recognised as 'Income from other trading
activities'.
Goods donated for on-going use by the charity are recognised as tangible fixed assets
and included in the SoFA as incoming resources when receivable.
These are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when:
• the charity becomes entitled to the resources;
· it is more likely than not that the trustees will receive the resources; and
• the monetary value can be measured with sufficient reliability.
Donated goods
The value of any voluntary help received is not included in the accounts but is described
in the trustees’ annual report.
Settlement of insurance
claims
Insurance claims are only included in the SoFA when the general income recognition
criteria are met (5.10 to 5.12 FRS102 SORP) and are included as an item of other
income in the SoFA.
Gifts in kind for use by the charity are included in the SoFA as income from donations
when receivable.

2.4 ASSETS
Intangible fixed assets
Heritage assets
Debtors (including trade debtors and loans receivable) are measured on initial recognition at
settlement amount after any trade discounts or amount advanced by the charity. Subsequently,
they are measured at the cash or other consideration expected to be received.
Current asset investments
The charity has has investments which it holds for resale or pending their sale and cash and cash
equivalents with a maturity date less than one year. These include cash on deposit and cash
equivalents with a maturity date of less than one year held for investment purposes rather than to
meet short term cash commitments as they fall due.

Stocks and work in
progress
Stocks held for sale as part of non-charitable trade are measured at the lower or cost or net
realisable value.
Goods or services provided as part of a charitable activity are measured at net realisable value
based on the service potential provided by items of stock.
Work in progress is valued at cost less any foreseeable loss that is likely to occur on the contract.
They are valued at cost.
Investments
Fixed asset investments in quoted shares, traded bonds and similar investments are
valued at initially at cost and subsequently at fair value (their market value) at the year
end. The same treatment is applied to unlisted investments unless fair value cannot be
measured reliably in which case it is measured at cost less impairment.
Investments held for resale or pending their sale and cash and cash equivalents with a
maturity date of less than 1 year are treated as current asset investments
The charity has intangible fixed assets, that is, non-monetary assets that do not have
physical substance but are identifiable and are controlled by the charity through custody
or legal rights. The amortisation rates and methods used are disclosed in note 9.5
They are valued at cost.
The charity has heritage assets, that is, non-monetary assets with historic, artistic,
scientific, technological, geophysical or environmental qualities that are held and
maintained principally for their contribution to knowledge and culture. The depreciation
rates and methods used as disclosed in note 9.6.1.4.
This includes any realised or unrealised gains or losses on the sale of investments and
any gain or loss resulting from revaluing investments to market value at the end of the
year.
2.3 EXPENDITURE AND LIABILITIES
They are valued at cost.
These are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year, and cost at least

by floor areas, or per capita, staff costs by the time spent and other costs by their usage.
