It has grown from strength to strength and was granted CIO status on 3 May 2019. The Trustees have regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit and take this guidance into account when making any relevant decisions about the operation of the Group.
We continue to attract new attendees on a regular bass proving the need for our type of support for Carers and Cared For. The group is named and has contact details within the Advice Pack issued by the MemoryTeam to all newly diagnosed patients within the area. Trustees will continue to utilise every opportunity to promote the group facilities by attending open days and Health and Social Events where leaflets are distributed inviting eligible diagnosed persons and Carers to attend the weekly social club and other organised trips/events. Forget-Me-Not Buddies continues to achieve its goal, its main emphasis being the social aspect of living with Dementia. Providing subsidised social activities and interaction for persons living with Dementia and their Carers - it offers support from people who have 'walked the full path, of the Dementia journey, from diagnosis to beyond demise of the diagnosed. Carers are welcome to continue attending Buddies even when the diagnosed can no longer do so, in fact some of our volunteers began as Carers attending with their loved ones. One of whom we have recently welcomed onto the Committee of Trustees. Attendees see Buddies as a 'close farnily, who share the highs and the lows whilst continuing to enjoy life as much as possible whilst on their journey. Buddies does not have 'talks' from organisations or have any link whatsoever with any of the National Charities, it is totally independent and promotes itself as a social club for Carers and their Cared For. Attendees know when they attend Buddies that they are there for a good time with people in a similar situation, in a safe environment where Carers and Cared For can interact without the need to explain the behaviourspresent with Dementia. A few hours of release fromthe daily pressure this illness brings to Carers and diagnosed. Buddies does not make grants to any other individual, organisation or charity. It has no investments and holds all the funds tt has as ongoing operating costs and back-up reserves in a cash account. Forget-Me-Not Buddies {Tamesidel curren aims to keep a minimum of £15,000 in reserveas a contingency fund to allow it to continueto run in the event that income stops orsupport we receivefrom funding and donations ceases. These funds could then be used to cover the cost of replacing this support for a period of time. Current operating costs average £32,000 per year. The group is reliant on our Volunteers, without them the group would not exist. We have no employees and all aspects of running the Charity are covered by volunteers. No volunteernrustee receives payment for any of their time. The group currently has 5 Trustees and 11 Volunteers.
Buddies Trustees work hard to ensure a varied and full agenda of events and activities for Attendees to look forward to and enjoy, including a weekly 'Club' with refreshments and live entertainment, regular Ten Pin Bowling, various day trips (which usually include food and entertainmentlshoppingl. Sadly, a chunk of our donations comes from Bereavement Donations when one of our Buddies or Carers passes away; but the club means so much to our attendees that we are their chosen charty for donations instead of flowers. Every single one of those
donations is special to us, as being remembered at that sad time means we have made a significant difference to their lives whilst battling a Dementia diagnosis. We currently find ourselves as a Group in a fortunate position, all grant monies I£IO,000) received from the National Lottery Community Fund in 2022 has been used for its restricted usage in this financial year. This assistance along with the fact that the club has been/is so well attended and our donations have come in steadily means we are now totally self-funding and do not intend to make any applications for grants or assistance in the foreseeable future. We feel that if we can continue in the vein we currently operate this not only ensures the continuance of Buddies but leaves the funding and grants available for Charities who may desperately need funding to continue, hence our stance on our ongoing operating costs and reserves position. We as Trustees try ourvery best to keep the 'family' feeling alive within the group our WhatsApp Groups continue to be active on a daily basis, this along with our Facebook Group and Page servesto keep us all 'chatting' to each other; For those not computer or smartphone savvywe keep in touch via our Liaison Officer (Beryl) telephoning members regularly. We continue to advertise our existence at every opportunity and receive regular enquiries from people looking for support having been recently diagnosed or hearing about Buddies and caringfora loved one with a diagnosis. As more people start their Dementia journeytheywill be welcomed to become partofthe Buddies Family. We hope you have enjoyed reading our Trustees Annual Report. Roy.
