## **Isle of Wight Island Games Association 169 Staplers Road, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 2DP Registered Charity 1183237 Trustees Annual Report Year Ending 31/10/2025**

The Charity and the work of the Trustees has a 2 year cycle of activity to match with the delivery of the Isle of Wight Team to each International Island Games. The focus in this last year was to ensure the competitors and Officials representing the Isle of Wight at the 2025 games in Orkney could do so in the best possible way and at the lowest possible cost.

The Trustees have been able to successfully secure various sponsorships, both financial and “in kind”, from several local businesses in order to assist the team achieve a very successful games. The level of sponsorship secured in both donations and services received saved each competitor £731 against the original costing to attend the games.

For the 4th successive games ICRTouch supported TeamIOW with the provision of team tracksuits and kit representing a huge benefit to all attendees of the games who did not therefore have to pay for their own kit. Likewise Red Funnel Ferries provided free cross solent travel for the team and were extremely accommodating to the team at the start and end of their long journey to/from the North of Scotland. This support is maintained thanks to the hard work of the chair of Trustees who meets with these amazing companies regularly throughout the 2 year games cycle.

At Orkney 2025, TeamIOW consisted of 99 Competitors, Managers and Assistants representing the Isle of Wight in 8 of the 12 available sports in Orkney. This was a team half the size of the previous games in Guernsey but this was due to a change of sports/ events available and the logistics of the games being on a small Island.

Of the hurdles the Trustees had to resolve in attending the games one of the most difficult proved to be the travel to the games themselves. Whilst Orkney is part of the British Isles it is at the furthest point from our Island and with only a small airport ferry options were considered. The Trustees eventually agreed with the sports managers to arrange coach travel all the way to Scrabster at the Northernmost point of Scotland. Whilst overnight coach travel was probably least conducive to good sporting performance the teams who travelled made sure they were well prepared and travelling 2 days prior to the start of sporting action meant everyone was able to perform to their best.

Three Trustees attended the games in support of the sporting teams. In addition the Trustees arranged the support of a dedicated Safeguarding Officer, Medical Support with a Doctor and 3 sports therapists and a Media Officer.

The medical team proved invaluable in supporting the teams throughout the week and enabling them to perform at their best. The doctor attended medical seminars through the week which will add to the Trustees and Sports Management knowledge and preparation for future games. The media manager was new for this games and their enhancements to social media presentation were especially well received by supporters back on the Island.

Accommodation at the games was in temporary dormitories in a local school and whilst this was not ideal for everyone most people were able to adjust to the conditions and get the necessary rest between performances. Safeguarding issues surrounding this type of accommodation were overseen by the Trustee appointed Safeguarding Officer in conjunction with Sports Team Managers.

The team achieved some great performances during the games with particularly dominant performances in Sailing and Ladies Golf where we won all 5 available Gold Medals across those 2 sports. The 6th Gold Medal for TeamIOW was achieved in Swimming. Overall 13 medals were won giving the IOW 7th place on the medal table. Medals were achieved in 6 of the 8 sports in which we participated. This is considered to be an excellent return for a relatively small team.

The attending Trustees received a presentation from the hosts of the next games which are scheduled for 2027 in the Faroe Islands.

In accordance with our agreed procedure the Trustees will use the next 12 months, when there is no games, to review the charity financial controls, risk register and other policies ahead of the next games. This will include a visit to the Faroes by 2 of the Trustees to ensure that TeamIOW will have the best information and accommodations in preparation for the games.

One Trustee has decided to stand down at the end of this year and the Trustees will therefore seek a suitable replacement(s) to ensure there are sufficient Trustees to continue the work of the charity in the years ahead.
