Isle of Wight Island Games Association 169 Staplers Road, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 2DP Registered Charity 1183237 Trustees Annual Report Year Ending 31/10/2023
This year has been one of continuing development of the Charity in which we were able to return to full activity in taking the Isle of Wight team (TeamIOW) to the NatWest International Island Games (The Games) on the island of Guernsey during July 2023.
The activities of the Trustees of the Association were to secure as much sponsorship as possible to enable the team to attend the games in the most effective way possible through arranging transport, equipment and athlete support throughout the week of the games.
Trustee, Kevin Winchcombe acted as overall Team Manager for TeamIOW at the games and made all the necessary arrangements for the team of 214 competitors, coaches, officials and support team to attend.
The Trustees were able to secure ‘sponsorship in kind’ for the supply of Team Uniforms (partnership with ICRTouch) and the provision of cross solent travel (partnership with Red Funnel). These partnerships meant that the Charity and the team members did not have to pay for these aspects of the trips to the games saving them in the region of £200 per head.
Fundraising activities included a sponsorship donation from local company Cherry Godfrey for the provision of sports therapy (Massage etc) to the team during the games. Securing a charity place and having a runner participate in the London Marathon raising in the region of £2,087 including gift aid. A donation of £2000 was also secured from the Wight Aid Foundation towards the expense of taking the team to the games.
The games were very successful for TeamIOW finishing 5th in the overall medal table with 15 Gold, 15 Silver and 8 Bronze medals (Total 38 medals). Numerous other personal best and great team performances were achieved throughout the week.
Charitable activity going forward will now focus on securing as much support as possible to send a team from the Isle of Wight to the International Island Games taking place in Orkney during July 2025.
With the activity of the Charity focussed on a 2 year cycle between each edition of the International Island Games the Trustees will ensure that they undertake a Policy and Risk review in each ‘nongames year’ to ensure the charity is best placed to achieve its objectives in the subsequent games year.
