## **Rye Harbour Sailability Annual Report 2024 - 2025**

## **Chair report:**

Another excellent year for Rye Harbour Sailability doing what we do best delivering sailing, offering disabled people the opportunity to experience the joy of sailing, seeing wildlife close up and get the best view of Rye.

We ran 10 sessions on the water with our two dinghies, The Drascombe Lugger, Sea Gem and the RS Venture Connect, Kerry. Both dinghies performed well during the season with routine maintenance and a few repairs carried out between sessions. The dinghies were supported by our RIB safety boat, Sea Rush.

The sailing days are the culmination of many hours of preparation and fund raising and we are fortunate to have a wonderful team of over 20 volunteers who support the charity all year round and without whom we wouldn’t exist.

Running the activities on the water requires year-round fundraising and as well as applications to funding organisations. Rye Harbour Sailability had a presence at the following events to raise funds and spread the word of what we do. We raise funds running a tombola or raffle and collecting donations.

- Stone Fete

- Rural Past Times Country Fayre: we took the Lugger and it attracted a lot of interest.

- Rye Fete

- Quiz Night at the Hub

- A Night at the Opera at St Mary’s Church: a wonderful evening of popular opera, with canapes and bubbles.

- Christmas Lunch at the Hub: a lovely social event for volunteers, sailors and supporters.

We have a regular group of sailors who attend our sailing days and get hands on experience on the water both sailing and sometimes motoring. We are continuously looking for more sailors to share these days.

The organisation is overseen by a group of trustees who ensure we do all we can to meet the aims of the trust. The trustees are the core group who help support all the activities mentioned above. We are looking for more trustees to take on a range of roles including Treasurer and Membership Secretary. We are grateful especially to Ronan Quigley for remaining as Treasurer until a permanent replacement is found.

Looking forward we are fundraising to purchase a Wheelyboat. This exciting development will enable wheelchair users and people with other mobility challenges to get out on the water. We aim to have the boat on the water for the 2026 season.

Finally, thank you to everyone who is involved in making our organisation the success it is.

## **Treasurer report:**

Our financial position remains strong and stable, a testament to effective management and dedicated fundraising. While we reported a modest deficit of £2,224 after accounting for non-cash depreciation of £5,328, our Net Assets grew to £57,387 (up from £54,100 last year), demonstrating our long-term financial health.

Significantly, our cash reserves improved substantially, with the bank balance increasing from £17,254 to £25,870. This improvement underpins our exciting new venture: the Wheelyboat Project, for which £5,512 has been successfully raised and set aside in the year.

Our operations are sustained by the invaluable commitment of our volunteers and supporters. We are focused on strengthening our governance, with an ongoing campaign to recruit new trustees and volunteers—a key challenge for small charities like ours. We are enormously grateful to all our volunteers and supporters. Sheila Davison has been instrumental in her role as Vice-Chair, diligently working to improve our systems and processes, including securing new funds through grant applications. Heidi Foster continues to provide essential support managing event finances.

Our modest financial footprint is greatly magnified by the profound impact the charity has on our members and the unique sense of community we foster.

## **Riverside report:**

As this season draws to a close we can reflect on another successful series of sailing days. We lost only two sessions due to weather and we were lucky on other occasions when a weather window gave us perfect sailing days between days of very inclement weather.

The Lugger and Venture have performed well with no major issues with either. The safety boat likewise has done the job when required. All boats are serviced in the winter and receive attention at each session.

Each session requires a minimum of 12 volunteers to prepare, launch, sail recover and clean the boats. Supported by volunteers in the clubhouse and galley. On average a total of 75 volunteer hours per session.

## Thank you to all the volunteers.

We have a small group of sailors who attend regularly plus other who occasionally come along, feedback from them indicates they all enjoy and value their time on the water.
