## **Rye Harbour Sailability (RHS) Annual Report for April 2022 to April 2023**

## **Chair**

We have accomplished so much in the last year, the highlight being the purchase of the new RS Connect dinghy. More detail below and as ever I would like to express grateful thanks to the volunteers and donors for making it happen and our sailors for making it such a joy to be part of charity and local community effort that provides sailing experiences for people of all ages and abilities.

Since 2017, through the hard work of its membership and the generosity of the local community and funding bodies as well as local organisations, Rye Harbour Sailability has acquired three new boats. The purchase of a safety boat and two dinghies leaves the charity in a strong position for further fund-raising activities.

## **Treasurer**

In April 2022, Treasurer David Tomkinson unexpectedly departed the charity, for personal reasons, rather than later in the year as originally planned. We are very grateful for David’s immense contribution to the charity over the years.

After David's departure, Kathy Head and Caroline Wylson stepped up to keep the financial records and online banking in order until a replacement could be found.

In January 2023, Ronan Quigley joined the charity as Treasurer, Vice Chair, and Company Secretary. To ease the administrative burden on Caroline Wylson, the management committee also decided to give all trustees responsibility for a portfolio.

Recruiting a new treasurer was part of a renewed focus on the charity's governance during the year. The charity continues to focus on recruiting, retaining, and renewing its trustees.

The charity was in receipt of an exceptional one-off grant of £8,684.80 from Rother District Council, which we are extremely grateful for – see more on that below. Excluding this grant, the charity generated a modest surplus during the year and, for the first time, recorded its fixed assets on the balance sheet. Fundraising efforts remained stable during the year, and costs remained under control. While the charity is small financially, it has a significant impact on the lives of its members and fosters a unique sense of community among all participants.

## **Social Calendar Fund Raising**

The social secretary position was superseded by a keen team of 3 to 4 members to run the galley. Successful social events such as holding stands at Stone and Winchelsea Fete, another Evening of Opera, a Film Night, Race Night, Quiz Night and Xmas lunch were great fun and raised important funds for the charity. The proceeds raised were ear marked towards the purchase of an RS Venture Connect. In September 2022 Caroline Wylson completed an application to Rother District Council Community Grants (RDCCG) who were prepared to award half the purchase price of the RS Venture Connect, £17,300.00. Thanks to the RDCCG award as well as an award from the Little Cheyne Court Wind Farm Fund of £2,500.00 and support of Icklesham Parish Council as well as the hard work of volunteers in fundraising over the year, RHS had raised enough funds to go ahead and order the RS Venture Connect. The dinghy arrived just before Christmas Eve and was welcomed by Rother District Councillors Lizzie Hacking and Paul Osborne.

## **Rye Harbour Sailability (RHS) Annual Report for April 2022 to April 2023**

January 2023 kicked off with a successful race night held at the Hub on Rye Hill whom RHS are proud to work in partnership with.

Anita Dearsley continues to do a great job as administrator of the 100 Club which brings in circa £1,250.00 per year for the charity

Once again Ros Culver did a great job at organising the production of Xmas cards, the profit of £566.76 was match funded by Barclays Bank which gave another great total of over £1,000.00 to the charity.

## **Riverside and Sailing Programme**

April 2022 saw 3 days of intensive volunteer training sailing with Luey, the Sport 16 and Sea Gem the Drascombe Lugger. 10 sails were booked to take place with one cancellation due to unfavourable weather in September.

By early 2023 Crispin Farrant had completed the sailing programme ensuring additional training days were added to give crews and helms much needed practice in sailing the new RS Venture Connect in preparation for sailing during the year ahead year. We welcomed George Parkin as a new Trustee with the portfolio responsible for Riverside including boat maintenance.

Training on the RS Venture began in March when we visited Mariners of Bewl and spent time on the water in their Venture under the guidance of Richard Hayden. This gave us a good idea of the training needed and enabled George Parkin to draw up a programme to train helms and crews.

## **Advertising, Fundraising and PR**

Unfortunately, there has been no trustee to fulfil this portfolio, so the burden still rests with the Chair. A concerted effort is being made to enlist Trustees with much needed skill sets. More effort is needed to find more skilled volunteers and sailors.
