Enabling people with disabilities to experience the fun and freedom of sailing

Trustee Annual Report for year ended 5[th] April 2022 as approved at the Annual General Meeting on 4[th] November 2022.

The new boat had arrived in September 2020 just leaving the chance to get one shake down sail in before the end of the sailing season in October. In April 2021 three volunteers training days were held to get helms and crews acquainted with handling the Lugger.

After having to postpone the boat naming due to covid we were delighted to hold a small event inviting no more than 30 people to formally name the new Lugger and the safety boat Friday 2[nd] July. The Mayor of Rye named the boats.

However, our sailing was still regulated by Covid 19 procedures and we only held our first Sailability event in May when gradually events started to open up and the team felt confident enough to do so. It was exciting for helms, crews, sailors and carers to get sailing aboard the new Drascombe Lugger.

We followed all Covid 19 advice from the RYA and the government ensuring that PPE was worn where necessary and hand sanitizer was available and that everyone respected social distancing. We had no reported cases of Covid at our events. However, our numbers of sailors were down because some felt too vulnerable to attend. The feedback from those who attended the sailing days was positive and they all felt safe either on or off the water.

RHS made a decision to work in partnership with The Hub on Rye Hill to ease the pressure on volunteers who had spent the sailing season helping to create and cater for successful events only to then organise and cater for winter social events too. The Dowager Entertains and Tea with the Calendar girls was held at Playden WI hall, boot sales were organised and charity pots distributed. RHS organised their second Xmas card. John Pulford very kindly donated another wonderful design for the card. With match funding from Barclays organised by trustee Ros Culver we raised some £1,500 profit from the sale of the cards. A successful film night and Christmas lunch was held at the Hub on Rye Hill.

In January the charity was informed that Rye Harbour Sailing Club (RHSC) wanted to increase their fee for the hourly hire of the club facilities. Apart from the hire of the clubhouse for RHS sailing events, berthing dues in the compound for the two boats and hire of the garage to house the safety boat are due annually. A group of RHS trustees met with RHSC members in February and a price of £18 per hour was agreed. With rising costs, the trustees decided that for the next sailing season each sailor would be charged a fee of £14 for every sail, carers would go free of charge but must still become

members to be covered by RHS insurance. There would be no increase in membership fees.

Please see accounts for year ended 5[th] April with receipts and payments accounts for breakdown of income and expenditure for the charity. The Rye Harbour Sailability 100 Club continues to provide a useful source of income for the charity albeit with only 36 members at present.

Having tried to run the Opera Evening during the previous year but having to cancel due to Covid, we held the event on 4[th] September and had a very successful night, receiving positive feedback and raised just under £2,000.00 for the charity.

RHS have been working closely with Tenterden Volunteer Hub this year who have provided volunteers for the charity namely a membership secretary.

The sustainability of the charity going forward is still questionable. Jen Tomkinson stood down as Social Secretary and Trustee this year and was thanked for all her hard work and for everything that she had achieved for the charity. David Tomkinson indicated informally to the Chair that he would stand down as Treasurer at the AGM to be held in October 2022.
