## **2. Objective and Activities** 

Bolton CDP is focused on developing the capacity of members of ethnic minorities to: 

- play active roles and contribute positively to leadership opportunities at all levels of society; 

- play active roles in entrepreneurship in order to develop the local economy and raise local aspirations and wellbeing; 

- develop confidence and access opportunities through volunteering; 

- create awareness and advocacy to promote the health and wellbeing of members of ethnic minority groups. 

- Enabling them to be engaged with the wider community. 

We achieve these objectives by: 

- supporting members of ethnic minorities in setting up and developing community groups 

- Providing information, training, workshops, and advocacy 

- Collaboration and partnership 

When planning activities Bolton CDP considered the charity commission’s guidance on public benefit. 

## **How we do what we do** 

Bolton CDP is dedicated to making sure that citizens are the centre of community development. We achieve this by utilizing the principles of Asset Based Community Development (ABCD).  The figure below shows how we utilize ABCD principles  in carrying out our community engagement :

## **3. Achievement and Performance** 

The year has indeed been a year of enormous challenge for the whole world due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Every aspect of society as we knew it was under threat both to lives and the means to sustain life. The world is still trying to manoeuvre its way out of the infection phase of the pandemic through lockdowns, social distancing, and vaccination. After this phase will come to the colossal challenge of rebuilding the lives and the economies of the world, with so many people out of jobs due to lockdowns and in some cases outright extinction of jobs requiring manual skills being replaced with artificial intelligence. 

Members of the ethnic minorities in Greater Manchester were worst hit by the pandemic due to the fact that the majority of them were not entitled to the benefits system coupled with the lockdowns placed severe economic, social and mental health pressures on them. They did not have access to support systems that they were used to like faith groups and their nationality groups this further worsened the situation which led to increased domestic abuse and poverty. 

Bolton CDP was able to work with partner community associations and faith groups to develop projects that were designed to help reach out to members of ethnic minority groups in other to help minimise the negative impact of the pandemic and also to give them the courage to build towards post pandemic and most of all give them hope to build their confidence and enable them to integrate into their new community. These projects have been crucial and beneficial to so many members of the community. 

## **A. Training program for young people in Farnworth Bolton** 

Bolton CDP is focused on empowering and building the capacity of the youth because we believe that they hold the key to our tomorrow. In order to achieve this we are currently working with our partners collaboratively to organize a series of regular training programs for young people. This program covers a wide variety of subject areas that are of interest to young people. The young people are leading by identifying where they would like to be supported and Bolton CDP works closely with partners able to bring these programs to reality. We have currently working with African young people in Farnworth Bolton for capacity training. It has been electrifying and exciting for young people.

## **B. Youth Engagement program in Bury** 

The aim of this project, is to engage and empower Youths and improve wellbeing, psychologically, emotionally, mentally, and otherwise through singing/ Musical shows leading to positive Transformation was achieved. 

We had interactive and skill acquisition sessions, which included voice training and during which the youths were taught how to sing according to Key, Diction and Tonality. They also learn about the scientifically proven benefits of Singing. 

## **The event outcomes are** : 

- To Improve wellbeing, and engage the Youths Mentally, Physically, Emotionally, Psychologically, and otherwise, positively. 

- To Rebuild self-confidence, self-worth, self-esteem, self-accomplishment, and Actualization. Promote Positive transformation were realized. 

- Youths were able to overcome stage fright. Built and rebuilt their self-confidence, as those who were shy to face the audience, became more confident before the end of the event. 

- Refreshment was served and prizes and awards were given to outstanding participants and gifts were given to participants. 

- The Youths showed so much enthusiasm and were very excited and happy about the event and look forward to more of this kind of opportunity.

## **C. Children Play Area in Bolton** 

Bolton CDP is actively involved with building the capacity of young people under 18 years of age. As part of our support, we work collaboratively with partners to utilise existing assets to build a support network for young people in our community focused on capacity building and aspiration for young people. One of the key steps is to have a community space where young people 10 years and below can meet with the support of their parents and teachers, to participate in activities.

## **D. Training Sessions for our Grandma Cooking Project** 

It has been a great time of learning for our volunteers during the training sessions of oral and visual history training sessions delivered by Dr Stephen Kelly and Judith Kelly. Our volunteers learned a lot and are ready to deliver the interviews for the grandma cooking project. We are so grateful for the Heritage lottery Fund (HLF) for supporting this project. The Grandma Cooking project will bring together young people and older people of Africa background on the impact living in England has had on their Africa food. There is need for the young Africans living in England learn their African heritage through African foods. 



## **E. Youth Sport Project Bolton** 

Bolton CDP in collaboration with NCC Bolton to engage the youth within the Halliwell area. This project is aimed at engaging the young people especially from the BAME background through sports and mentorship. It was a great time and hope to continue the project with kind support of partners.

## **F. Award from Manchester University Department of Public Health** 

Bolton CDP received a recognition award from the University of Manchester Department of Public Health for our work in improving health and wellbeing. Bolton was represented by Dr. Oboh Achioyamen our director. The award was presented by Professor Arpana Verma the head of the Department of Public Health.

## **G. Foodbank** 

We are grateful to be able to partner with Loveworld church Bolton to work together to support the community by providing food bank support. We have been able to reach out to more people. 




## **H.  Community Celebration** 

Bolton CDP is focused on community engagement and as part of that, we work closely with various communities especially the ethnic minority communities across greater Manchester. We have the privilege of working with the Rwanda community of greater Manchester, to work on areas around capacity development and wellbeing. Bolton CDP supported organizing a community celebration that brought together members of the Rwanda community and other communities across greater Manchester. It was a great time for networking.

## **I.  Volunteering** 

Bolton CDP has been able to achieve its pillars of engaging ethnic minority groups through leadership development, entrepreneurship and volunteering. Bolton CDP has had the privilege to work with dedicated and passionate volunteers to help make it all happen. We have had more than 100 volunteers support us throughout the year.

## **6. Independent examiner statement** 

## Basis of independent examiner’s report: 

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as Trustees concerning any such matters. 

The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts. 

## Independent examiner’s statement: 

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: 

- (1) Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements 

- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the Act; and 

- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Act have not been met; or 

- (2) To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **7. Note to the Financial Statements** 

## 1. Basis of Preparation of Financial Statements 

The Financial statements are prepared under the historic cost convention and include the results of the Charity’s operations which are described in the Trustee’s Report and all of which are continuing. 

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the statement of recommended practice for Charity Accounts: 

- a. Fixed assets retained for use by the organisation include: laptops purchased in 2019. These fixed assets are depreciated using the straight-line method of depreciation over a period of three years. 

b. Change in basis of accounting: Grants Receivable Grants for immediate expenditure are accounted for when they become receivable. Grants received for specific purposes are treated as restricted funds. Grants restricted to future accounting periods are deferred and recognised in those periods. 

## 2. Statement of Trustees Responsibilities 

The standard constitution of the Charity requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs and of the surplus or deficit for the period. In preparing these financial statements the trustees are required to:- 

- select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; 

- make judgments that are reasonable and prudent; 

- Prepare the financial statements on a going concern basis 

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the Charity. 

They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. 

The Charity acknowledges receipt of grants from: 

- National Lottery Community Fund: £22500 

- Garfield Weston: £10000 

- Heritage Lottery Fund: £22547
