REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF LONG STRATTON LIONS CLUB (CIO) Registration number 1183178 FOR THE PERIOD 1 JULY 2023 – JUNE 30 2024
The Trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty to have regard to the guidance on public benefit by the Charity Commission in exercising their powers and duties.
The public benefit of the Charity is the support and enablement of children, young people, the elderly, those with disabilities, and all mankind; this is achieved principally by the award and monitoring of grants.
Long Stratton Lions Club (CIO) is an independent local charity operating under the umbrella of Lions Clubs International in District 105CE, through which it serves the wider community. Certain monies are forwarded to District 105CE for onward distribution; this year this included £300 to LCIF, the Lions disaster fund, plus £100 for water aid. Other donations outside our immediate area were £100 to a heart charity and £150 to sponsor our Hearing Dog.
In Long Stratton itself, a large part of our expenditure was in support of the elderly, with a summer outing for the local retirement home and contributions to Christmas festivities. We helped the needy with donations to the food bank, Christmas hampers, and presents for the Women’s Shelter. We supported those with physical or mental disabilities with garden help, rent for a self-help group, support for the Lions Paralympics and a contribution to the purchase of an electric tricycle. Children in the area were not forgotten, with £150 going towards a Christmas party, £150 to Nelson’s Journey, £42 to Lions youth work plus, of course, our regular commitment to the Children’s Ward at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital providing wash bags for child and parent in emergency admissions
Our largest donation was to St Martin’s Trust for the homeless. Last year we used their car park for charity on a trial basis, keeping half and donating half the takings to them. We worked very hard to follow their requirements to make the scheme a success and were delighted that they agreed to continue the arrangement. We increased their share to a round £1000 to express our gratitude to this very much needed charity.
We work very hard to raise the money for our charity work. Manning the charity car park raised the bulk of it. Other fund-raising included a race night, a quiz, tombolas, and a collection at Christmas at the local Co-op, for which we thank them. We also try to benefit the community in other ways by knitting blankets for babies at the N&N hospital and litter picking sorties.
